Well, Giggy is overpaid, but he's better than Toskala, that's for damn sure. Ian White was good, but they got Phaneuf replacing him, so that's all good. Mayers and Hagman are replacable for sure, like LK said, othe than all the $ they took on, these are pretty good trades for the leafs right now, on paper, only time will tell I suppose.
Well it turned out to be an interesting day, 3 fairly significant trades. The latest being...

To NYR:
Olli Jokinen
Brandon Prust

To Calgary:
Ales Kotalik
Chris Higgins

Interesting trade, i have no idea what's left on Jokinen's contract, but assuming it's no more than two years (hopefully just one), than i like this move. Kotalik is a talented player who can play the point on the PP, and he has a canon for a shot, but 5-on-5 Tortorella just wouldn't play the guy. He's still owed $6 million over 2 years beyond this season, so it's good to be clear of his contract. As for Higgins, the guy has showed in the past that he can score 20 goals, but for whatever reason he's been snackbitten all season long. To his credit though, it certainly hasn't been for lack of trying, for the most part he's worked hard all season.

I know Jokinen isn't the same player that was putting up 40 goal/90 point seasons in Florida 5 years ago, but the Rangers really didn't give up much to get him, so i think it's worth the risk. Who knows, the guy is still only 31 so maybe he'll rebound playing with a guy like Gaborik. I can only hope...
Here's the cap hit for all of the roster players involved in todays Toronto trades, according to The Hockey News "the money issue".

To Toronto:
Dion Phaneuf, $6.5 million
JS Giguere, $6 million
Fredrik Sjostrom, $750,000

To Calgary/Anaheim:
Jason Blake, $4 million
Vesa Toskela, $4 million
Niklas Hagman, $3 million
Matt Stajan, $1.75 million
Jamal Mayers, $1.33 million
Ian White, $850,000

*******************************

And while i'm at it, here's the Rangers/Flames numbers

To NYR:
Olli Jokinen, $5.25 million
Brandon Prust, $500,000

To Calgary:
Ales Kotalik, $3 million
Chris Higgins, $2.25 million

That's all Phaneuf is worth, really. He's crap.

Lately, ya I agree. He's gotta stop handing out checks, and then turtle like a pussy whenever someone tries to fight or stand up to him. If Iginla (IMO, the best Captain in the game right now) can defend himself, Phaneuf should be able to too.

Who knows, maybe Hogtown will rejuvenate his play.

Apparently this trade is on hold for the time being.

The deal was finalized basically right after the Flames' game.

To Rangers:
Olli Jokinen, Brandon Prust

To Flames:
Chris Higgins, Ales Kotalik
This may seem random... but every April Fool's Day I think of deleting this thread and seeing who flips their shit Smile

Poor, poor Calgary.

Yeah, Higgins is a good pick-up, though.
Kovalchuck traded to the New Jersey Devils..

for Kovy and some nobody..
As a Rangers fan, i hate the Devils...but honestly in a way i'm kind of happy for Devils fans. It's not too often that franchise lands an impact player, either via trade or free agency. Usually it's the other way around, as the fans have to watch star player after star player bolt town (Niedermayer, Holik, Rafalski, Gomez, Gionta, etc).

Is there any further proof that Atlanta should just fold up shop, and all record of their existence be burned and never spoken of again. This is a sad day for hockey.

no shit

anyone with talent can't get out fast enough

I'm not a fan of Kovalchuk...be interesting to see how long the Devils intend to hold him
He's on rental, I doubt he'll stay in NJ, unless they win the cup, which I am fairly certain they won't.
