I read that Julien was hired on http://www.thefourthperiod.com
I wasn't aware that TSN or anyone else hadn't broke the story yet, so i agree, perhaps it is a bit premature b/c i don't have a lot of faith in T4P.
LizardKing51 Wrote:The Flyers grossly overpaid on Hartnell imo, they still dont have a real goalie so Im not concerned, until they get a steady netminder and a real centre, they will still be average.
I dunno, Biron is probably, IMO, the most underrated goalie in the NHL
Wow, you go away for one weekend and all of a sudden the sh*t hits the fan!

Dont let the door hit you on the way out loser.. :rambo:
Looks like Dale Tallon wants to take a run at the Bonehead GM title that was vacated when Doug Maclean was finally fired. I can't believe anyone would be dumb enough to take on that contract. Amazing.
Haha, I love it! Even though I'm no Hab fan by any means, my dumbass brother in law is a Chicago fan (insert joke here, I do every chance I get! ) so I can't wait to rub this in his face.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think that logo kicks ass! I hope someone in Vancouver sees this and adopts it immediately.

now it's official:

Can't figure this move out at all. The team finally breaks through to the Cup finals and then basically fires the GM? Can't help thinking of that John Lennon song now... "Instant Karma's gonna get you."
ryan93 Wrote:Yep the Flyers made a huge splash today trading/signing both Scott Hartnall & Kimo Timmonen
Wow, bold move for sure. They both may be overpaid (especially Hartnell, geez I like him as a player but not for $4.2M a year, wow...) but they'll help the team, and with a full season of Martin Biron in net, they could be a team on the rise. I don't know about contending for anything yet, but they strike me now as a scary team to play. As for Nashville, that has to hurt. Is this the start of a fire sale for the team? If so, how does it affect them trying to stay in town and/or Balsillie's attempt to move them out? It will be interesting to follow this for sure.
All this, and the draft is this Friday night. I'll be interested to see how this pans out. 2 London Knights could be going in the top 10, and maybe Kane will go #1... which will make my brother in law happy, unfortunately, but oh well, it will be interesting to see nonetheless!

If someone who owned a hockey team wanted to keep attendance down in order to take advantage of an escape clause in their arena lease and move the team out of town, one might think they would:
a) Not go out of their way to ice a competitive team
b) increase ticket prices
Not to suggest this is starting to happen in Nashville, but if they let a few more veterans get away, and announce they're raising ticket prices, I won't be the least bit surprised.

Yeah, but the new guy doesn't own the team yet and the old guy claims he's lost millions, which to me means he's covering his ass if the sale doesn't go through.

And then they should get Charlie Sheen out of prison and make him the closer.

True, but the old guy has made it clear he wants to sell, so even if this deal falls through, he's likely to attempt to mitigate his ongoing losses in the short-term by cutting expenses (payroll).

Simmons was almost making sense until he started holding up Philly as a good role model for the Leafs:
I love this part:
The Philadelphia Flyers made a wild preemptive strike with the trading for and signing of Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen yesterday.
Which was, ironically enough, followed by this part:
Because winning is all that matters to these teams. Because just making the playoffs isn't enough. Because, doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.
Unless that something means signing Pavel Kubina for $20 million.
So according to Simmons, overpaying for a $6MM defenceman is much better than overpaying for a $5MM defenceman. In other words, when the Leafs do something, it's automatically bad. When anyone else does something, the Leafs look bad.
I think I get the point of his rambling, which is that it is better to have ownership that takes risks to win Lord Stanley's Cup and give the team and city something to brag about and take pride in. However, he totally misses the point of owning a team, which is to have fun, win and make money at the same time, if possible. It's not just about pouring money into a team to make it competitive and losing your investment at the same time.

That's a good one alright. Nothing tops his "Mats Sundin needs career-ending hip surgery" piece from a few weeks back though.
At the other end of the spectrum,
here's some slightly more intelligent NHL commentary, ahead of tomorrow's board of governors' meeting.

That is a good one - I like Brunt. I don't always agree with what he has to say, but at least he's coherent.
Searching For Bobby Orr is a really good book.

In addition to overpaying for a $6M defenceman, the Flyers as you pointed out earlier also overpaid for a $4M+ forward whose scoring stats are average at best.
Um, yeah, so how's managing that salary cap thing going, Philly?
In a way, I do worry that some of Simmons' ramblings are right, even though his comparisons to the Flyers are completely, ludicrously off the mark... that the Leafs due to the presence of the Teachers' Pension are too focused on the bottom line at the expense of winning. I probably won't feel comfortable about that until someone finally gets the cash together... and grows a set... to step up and buy the Teachers' Pension out.

Perhaps, but let me ask you this: is winning not good for business? Are four rounds of home playoff dates not good for business? Are the increased merchandise sales that come with winning not good for business? Is the inevitable ticket price increase that comes with being a defending Cup champ, or Cup finalist, not good for business?
The simple fact of the matter is that winning is VERY good for business, especially when you consider that the team can charge more for playoff tickets, but their biggest expense (salaries) is greatly reduced. So anyone - and especially Steve Simmons - who thinks that any NHL owner, regardless of who they are, doesn't want to win, is out to lunch. If you are more concerned with your ROI, like the Teacher's Pension, you want to win for all that playoff gravy. If you are simply a competitive bastard, you want to win because you are a competitive bastard.
So, quite frankly, I simply don't understand the argument that because the Teacher's Pension is a business first, that they don't want the Leafs to win the Cup. Of course they do! Their motivations are just a little different than the average fan.....
