Yeah, Gainey certainly gets to fall back on the past. Look at the records of their teams with them as GM:

Habs' record with Gainey as GM: 117-91-7-19, 1 playoff round won
Leafs' record with JFJ as GM: 119-84-10-20, 1 playoff round won

Yet Gainey's moves rarely get questioned, yet the Expert Toronto Media scoffs at everything JFJ does. Not that I'm defending him...just thought it was interesting the different standards that are in place for two guys that have virtually identical records.
While on the topic of GM's, not sure who has seen the latest Hockey News yet, but they rank the GM's this week.

umm, on what stats/metrics were they ranked? or was it a subjective-type thing?

Agreed.

Man, I am so sick and tired of accolades for Detroit. Look at that friggin division! My rec league team could put up 100 points if we got to play Columbus and Chicago 160 times a season.

Kevin Lowe?!?!? The GM of a non-playoff team at #11?!?! Seriously?!?!?

Agreed on Nonis too...I assume Lowe is still high based on the strength of their run to the finals last year, but how on earth is Paul Holmgreen (of the last-place Flyers) #12?
That list is a complete joke...I just noticed Dale Tallon at #18. In a 30 league team Tallon should be #30 (with Doug Maclean at #31). Tallon signed Nikolai Khabibulin, Adrian Aucoin (5 goals over two seasons), and Martin Lapointe (19 points, minus 16) to contracts that will pay the three of them $13.15 million next season. How the hell can those moves alone put him at 18th?!? Then you add in the fact that he signed an injury prone Martin Havlat to $6 mil per, to go with their best prospect (an injury prone Tuomo Ruutu), and you've got a joke of a team to go with a joke of an owner.
Their comments for Tallon were...

"Both times Dale Tallon was hired to work in the Blackhawks front office, he came out of the broadcast booth to do it. That's the way they do things in Chicago. But if Tallon continues an upward trajectory after a strong start as GM, this one might just work out. Since taking the job, Tallon has made significant upgrades by signing Nikolai Khabibulin as a free agent and giving up Mark Bell to get Martin Havlat, who is a franchise cornerstone if he can stay healthy. Tallon determined that $2.95-million arbitration award for Kyle Calder was too much and dealt him to Philadelphia for Michael Handzus. Based on his performance in international hockey, Jonathan Toews looks like he'll be a player. Tallon picked him over Phil Kessel and Nicklas Backstrom."

As for how they get the rankings..."There was no specific forumula, but things were weighted more to the recent past - which is why, for example, Rangers GM Glen Sather has more Cups than any ofhis counterparts, but ranks ahead of only six of them.
Our measurements for GMs included: past achievements and success; recent performance on the job; hirings and firings; draft performance; free agent signings; and, what he did at the recent trade deadline."
that math teacher Lou Jersey should be number one… :thumb:
Hey does anybody know what's up with Grant Marshall this season? Is he hurt? I was wodering where he was about a month ago & searched on espn.com, and he'st still listed with the New Jersey Devils, but hasn't played a game yet this season.

Looks like he's spent the bulk of the season in the AHL with Lowell.

Back to the GM list, their explanation makes no sense when using Tallon as an example:

(1) past achievements and success: none
(2) recent performance on the job: tied for last in their division
(3) draft performance: TBD
(4) free agent signings: as I pointed out before, Lapointe and Aucoin have been total duds. And I'll never be convinced that Khabibulin was worth that fat contract.
(5) What he did at the recent trade deadline: traded away Brandon Bochenski, who has gone on to put up 17 points in 18 games with Bruins, for a guy who was a 5th round pick and has yet to play in the NHL.

Yeah, I can see how that translates to 18th of 30.
Yeah I've always been high on Bochenski, and I didn't understand why the Hawks gave up on him then, let alone now that he's putting up the offensive numbers that he is. Same goes for Ottawa last spring.

Another steal I think on deadline day was the St.Louis Blues getting Brad Boyes. He's played great in his 5 or 6 games with the Blues so far.

I agree with most of what you wrote, especially regarding the smart moves that St. Louis has been making. This is the only thing I didn't agree with, Atlanta is going to tank and Waddell will be out of a job soon. And of course this will come back to bite them in the ass twice over, since they mortgaged a lot for Tkachuk.

Looks like the moves have worked pretty well for the Thrashers so far. At the deadline they look like a team on the way out of the playoff picture, but Tkachuk & Zhitnik in particular have helped and they've been much better the past couple weeks. They are 5-1 since the deadline and pretty much have secured their 1st ever playoff birth. I'm not convinced that they'll be able to cause much damage in the post-season, but just getting in is a big step for the franchise. While i think they definitely overpaid for Keith Tkachuk, he's played well, and in his 6 games with Atlanta, has 4 goals & 1 assist for 5 points, and is a +7, and 23 PIM (including a fight with Francis Bouillon).
fantastic news...looks like the penguins are staying put!
