Yeah.. let's throw a pity party for a guy who's making $3.5 million US and was asking for a multi-year extension worth $5.5 million annually.
A little perspective is needed when it comes to stuff like this. :?

the last line seriously got to me...
Tie Domi just talked about the Smyth trade, and I actually agree with him. The contract negotiations came to within 2 hundred thousand dollars for a 5-million dollar deal? Smyth wanted to leave, and him getting all teary-eyed just makes him seem like even more of a dumbass. He compared Smyth's shitty attitude to Darcy Tucker's apparently good attitude, who took a pay cut to stay where he wanted.

exactly..if they weren't that far apart, and he just LOVES playing there so goddamn much...a couple hundred grand ain't much in the scheme of things

I can back that up...kind of. I went to the Blues/Leafs game at Scottrade earlier this month. I struck up a bit of a conversation with a diehard Blues fan in front of me. He said that the Kiel Center (or Savvis or Civic or whatever it was that week) used to be THE place back in the day. Every seat was full - not so the last two years. With Davidson obviously geared to rebuild this team - and do it the right way - and management dropping ticket prices for next year, I can see the fans starting to come back. Little by little.

Good Christ.....is Domi still spewing his bullshit about taking "less" to stay in Toronto last year? Funny how all of those supposed other offers (14 or so, according to him) dried up when the Leafs bought him out.

He was talking about Darcy Tucker, who recently agreed to stay for less than what he would have received on free agency (I wasn't really paying attention). I'm sure, according to Domi, other Sports Networks offered him jobs too  He just decided to pick TSN for "less."
Also, Domi's segment on TSN is called "Win, Loss, Tie." I wonder if he thought of that all by himself...

show some heart guys.
the guy is leaving the city where he: 1) was drafted and played his entire career, 2) has alot of family, a restaurant, and a home, 3) and is loved by the entire city. he played in edmonton for 12 years, through some bad times, and recently some great times (last year). to think that he wouldn't be sad to be leaving, regardless of circumstance, is unreasonable.
yes, he may have been asking alot, but people seem to forget he took a 'hometown discount' for a loooong time in edmonton. he said at the start of the year that he wasn't going to again. and when all the other players on edmonton were getting signed (some for more than they were worth ie. horcoff), where was his deal?
having said that, there is blame on both sides. kevin lowe mismanaged this, and smyth was being unreasonable. but no one knows for sure what went on in that room, so its hard to make valid comments.
one thing that is interesting is smyth didn't even know the deal fell through...he found out from the media. his manager had been so certain a deal was going through that he leaked it that it was as good as done. things went south with only 20 minutes left before the deadline, and i'm guessing it was too late at that point.
no one knows how this is gonna play out, and july 1st is gonna be a day to watch...
As far as professional athletes go Ryan Smyth is about as genuine as they get. The guy is all heart. I'm down here in the good ol' USA for work this week (atlanta), so I'm not getting much hockey coverage, but on ESPN's Sportscenter Barry Melrose (who is apparently their hockey expert) just said to watch for Smyth to sign with the Leafs in the summer...(which, as a Leaf fan, I would love).
Bottom line though, in terms of a hockey move, the Oilers weren't going to make the playoffs this season anyway, and they got a decent return for a player they might lose in the offseason for nothing. So in that sense it's not that bad a move. Come July 1 there will be lots of teams bidding for him, so it's only then that we'll know if he's willing to take a discount to go back to Edmonton. If he does go back to the Oilers in July, I bet he gets more than they offered right now, but if that's the case, they'll have him, plus the 2 decent prospects and a first round pick...which seems like pretty good value to me. So we'll see how it plays out.

After watching his emotional goodbye, there's no way I think they would have lost him for nothing...he said it best, his heart is in Edmonton.
p.s. I doubt he'd ever sign with the Leafs

Fat chance of that happening. With Tucker signed for $3 mil next season and beyond, that puts the Leafs' cap hit at $34 million already for next season, with 11 slots open (thanks McCabe!). If Smyth is looking for $5.5+, that would leave the Leafs with about $5 million to sign ten guys......

Yeah it's cleary just wishful thinking on my part...but stranger things have happened.
And cfreneyh, you're forgetting the word on the street is that the cap will go up again next year, potentially close to $50 million, so that would give us a bit more room. But again, it's just my wishful thinking. Every rational fan knows that with the amount of money the Leafs have invested in their "core" 3 defensemen, nothing short of an act of god will get this team anywhere near serious contention in the next few years.
attn: Montreal...
Ryan Smyth?
i'd be cool with that, be a hell of a lot better than Samsquanch or fuckin Mr. "I'm insanely talented but don't score a lot any more" Kovalev...this dude actually plays hard every night ...you can't put a tag on that really...well you can, haha, but not really.
cferneyh Wrote:Cheering for the Sens is a smart choice?!? How's that? Is it the annual playoff disappointments? Or the Daigle Era? Or the Yashin Era? Or the Lalime Era? Or Alfie's Cup guarantee?
The Daigle era? Are you serious? You're going to attack the fan support of the Senators two years into their inauguration? That is incredibly weak.
Feel free to criticize Lalime, at least he got the team into the playoffs (RE: Raycroft 06/07...). And please, continue to trash Alfredsson, because anybody who actively watches the Senators knows what he means to the team; his defensive play, his ice-time and his numbers support him as a leader (if Ryan Smith is looking for 5+ million a year, Alfredsson is the steal of the decade).
Annual playoff disappointments sound suspicously familiar to another Ontario team (when they can actually get there), as well as another half-dozen legitimate contenders in any given year. While Ottawa has only been on the gates of the Stanley Cup finals once in the last ten years (as has Toronto), I think that we will discover this year to be different. I guess only time will tell, but on the first of March, I guarantee that Ottawa will make it to the Conference finals. Anybody interested in putting up a wager?
i'll wager that Cfer isn't in on it haha, i'll be mad as hell if he accepts any wagers on here ever again, after refusing to participate in last year's NFL wager...(even though he woulda won big time, haha)
