that was crazy. didn't see that coming. there goes the leafs playoffs hopes... they werent big to begin with. but for bertuzzi, soon as i heard he was going to detroit i grabbed him off free agency in fantasy. hope it works out.
So i thought Detroit, San Jose and Pittsburgh did the best this deadline until the Smyth deal to New York. The islanders managed to get Smyth, Zednik and Bergeron in the past week. There is no doubt they will be in the playoffs and i won't be surprised if its higher than the 8th spot.
What is Edmonton thinking?!??
On Mark Messier night?? Wooo...I'm curious to see how the fans will react.
btw, Smyth is gonna take this one personally, and I'm willing to bet that he Doesn't sign with the Oil come July 1st.

Ya, he was the heart and soul of that team. I get the feeling that there was more going on under the surface though.

What was going on was that Smyth was a free agent after this season and the Oilers thought he was asking too much (5.5 or so/year) in contract negotiations. Smyth plays a style of hockey where he may wear down in a year or two and maybe this will be good for the Oilers in the future, maybe not. Anyway, the Oilers front office is cheap. Everyone knows that. Big Grin
I can definitely understand why the Oilers would trade Ryan Smyth & who knows if there was a better offer out there had they decided earlier in the day that they were going to deal him, but really they didn't got much of anything in return either. I'm not really a fan of either Robert Nielson or Ryan O'Marra & question whether either will ever make an impact in the NHL, and the 1st round pick will be likely be in the 16th-20th range, and it's not supposed to be a strong draft by any stretch.

I think the Islanders are obviously a better team today with not only Ryan Smyth on board, but also Richard Zednik...and the fact they didn't deal Jason Blake

Detroit added both Todd Bertuzzi & Kyle Calder, both come with obvious question marks...but the potential is there, and i really like both of these moves from a Red Wings perspective.

I really like what John Davidson did today too for the St.Louis Blues. He got back a very, very good package for Keith Tkachuk a few days ago, and yielded another good package for Bill Guerin this morning. He also added a guy that i'm a big fan of, and that is Brad Boyes. Boyes had a terrific rookie season for the Bruins last season but got off to a rough start in Boston this year, and as such has been in coach Dave Lewis' doghouse the last couple months. I think he'll rebound in St.Louis though playing a much more promient role.

The Atlanta Thrashers are big winners in my opinion as well. Not only did they add Keith Tkachuk up front and veteran Alexei Zhitnik on the blueline, but also plucked two veterans off the Rangers roster in center Jason Krog and speedster Pascul Dupuis.

The Sharks are a much stronger team today too with Bill Guerin & Craig Rivet on board, and i like the Leafs addition of Yanic Perreault, even though it came at a fairly steep price in defensemen Brandon Bell and a top draft pick.

I agree with most of what you wrote, especially regarding the smart moves that St. Louis has been making. This is the only thing I didn't agree with, Atlanta is going to tank and Waddell will be out of a job soon. And of course this will come back to bite them in the ass twice over, since they mortgaged a lot for Tkachuk.

He was expected to play a pretty prominent role for the B's this season and that didn't pan out very well. I wonder about that guy for a couple of reasons: (1) he's only 24 but he's now with his fourth organization (Leafs, Sharks, Bruins, and now Blues) and (2) the NHL's history is littered with players who had strong rookie seasons, but then fell off the face of the Earth once other teams started paying more attention to them defensively.

I remember I wasn't thrilled when the Leafs parted with him as part of the Owen Nolan Experiment.....but now that he's with his fourth team it's clear that he isn't living up to expectations wherever he goes.
Is it just me, or is the only deal JFJ made today just horrible? Two future players for Yanic Perreault? What a laugh.
And yes, John Davidson has proved to be one of the smartest GMs around this year.

The best thing JFJ did today was not bringing back Gary Roberts. I think the fact that he didn't fold to Robert's year-long media campaign to get traded back to Toronto might be my favourite thing about the JFJ "era" so far.....
once again the media up to the deadline goes on and on about who's going to toronto, and once again they're let down

I agree. Are the Leafs striving to get older or something? Is Bell that bad? I mean, he's still young and I thought he was going to be a part of Toronto's future. If Perreault worth it? I like Perreault and all but is he going to put Toronto over the hump for a Cup? The move doesn't make sense. If the Leafs were contenders, it might be logical but even the Leafs have to know they have no chance at winning a Cup this season. They will be hard pressed to make the playoffs.

I'm actually pretty shocked that old man Roberts didn't end up back in Toronto. Big Grin
