 typical bitter Nucks fan who wishes his team was more skilled. I think being fast and skilled, and therefor being hooked and slashed a lot, is a lot different than being weak on their skates.

 Yeah, I'm a bitter Nucks fan, I suppose. That has nothing to do with my thoughts on officiating, though. The thing is, most penalties are ticky tack, like I said. I'm all for a legitimately nasty hook or slash being called, but that's not usually the case. I used to go to Junior B games to watch the local team a few years ago and I'd hate it when the hometown fans were always screaming for a penalty. So, I'm not biased at all in that regard. The Flames did kind of get screwed over by the refs in the first game of the season, for instance. The Canucks won the game, but I was still disgusted with the officiating. Penalties slow the flow of the game down and brings the quality of the game down quite a bit. I don't see how people could argue that. I mean, this is hockey here. It is a contact sport. I have to put up with getting hooked and slashed when I play rec hockey. I don't think it's too much to ask for NHL players to put up with at least a LITTLE bit of that. I'd like you to explain to me how hockey is such a great game now when guys like Briere and Avery can stand in front of the net without harm. :nooooo
I'm probably more of a Caps fan than Canucks fan, now. The Caps are at least attempting to put a winning team on the ice. :rambo:
tigerthelion Wrote:direwolf74 Wrote:Fantastic game tonight! What really made it fun to watch was that the officials put their whistles away for the most part and allowed both teams to play some exciting, end-to-end hockey. It was incredibly refreshing. My Flames have finally found their game and are currently riding a 4-game winning streak. We're getting goals from all over the place, the defence has been much better, and Kipper is starting to look like his old self again. Things are definitely looking up in Cowtown.
Looks like Kipper just needed some time.
I watched the Nucks/Bruins game last night. It was atrociously boring, but I was very pleased with the officiating. The players are 100% at fault for making it boring. The officials get an A+ rating from me. After the game, Gary Valk whined about the Bruins not getting called for enough penalties. Valk needs to STFU. It's guys like Valk that are trying to completely ruin the game. :nooooo
It's quite simple:
MORE PENALTIES = BAD
LESS PENALTIES = GOOD
Most of the penalties called, like you said, are shitty ticky tack calls. I'm sure that Habs fans and Red Wings fans love it when their theam gets powerplay after powerplay because they are so weak on their skates, but it's bad for hockey.
So do you think they should go back to the pre-lockout days when clutching and grabbing were all the rage? Cause that was exciting hockey . Enforcing the rules gives the skilled players more opportunities to display their skill, which is where most of the excitement in the game comes from.
I agree that the refs aren't the problem. We're into the 4th season since the lockout, you'd think the players would have learned what is and isn't a penalty by now...

Well I can't really argue with any of that, I also feel that the reffing lately has been pretty bad.. I was just taking issue with you calling out the Habs for being weak on their skates.. haha no worries.
Also, Jarko Ruutu needs to be added to your list I think too
Good to see Alfredsson locked up and ready to finish his career with Ottawa. Not that there was ever really any doubt he wouldn't finish his career in the capital, but it's nice to have it on paper. It is certainly a rarity these days for a player to play his entire career with one team, and especially one that has been embroidered with a team that has encountered so much turmoil (disastrous seasons, impending bankruptcy, imploding local loyalty and media disenchantment, chaotic play-off finishes, and calls for Captaincy removal and trades). The guy only gets better with age; he has become one of the best all-around players in the league. I sincerely hope his final three years (I suspect he'll retire after that) bring him the cup, as I do with Koivu and Iginla.
Let the Alfie-Haters have their way, but he probably could have made more on the free-market. Discuss?
Another win for the Flames. Woohoo!!!

Alfie is fine in my books, however my preferred SC order the next three years would involve a Koivu hat-trick
anyone catch the last 8 minutes of the LEAF game???
Holy crap.
And the Flames just keep on rolling. 6 in a row, baby!

Who was at work and wasn't able to watch the last 7 minutes of last night's Rangers/Leafs game? Who went home last night thinking his team probably won 2-1? Ouch. I knew the other shoe was going to drop on the Rangers eventually, but damn. At least it was against an original 6 team, and not the likes of the Wild or the BJs. Still though, ouch...
Ya good game I saw the highlights....But how about the game I was watching the HABS down 4 - 1 in the third period and come back and win 5 - 4...Awesome :jump

I think Ron Wilson really has the Leafs playing over their heads right now. He doesn't put up with bullshit, and with so many young unproven players on the team, a lot of guys are trying to make a name for themselves and forge out an NHL career for themselves. I can't remember a Leafs team being this scrappy for a long time. I know its still early, and things can and probably will change for them, but for right now they're playing some good hockey. And who knew their D would actually be a strength for them this year. I think the main difference this year from last is the culture. With so many new players on the team, that nonchalant win or lose attitude seems to be gone.
The Leafs have more to celebrate, though.
The Habs never should have been down 4-1 to the Isles to begin with. Nice to see Plekanec and Kovalev start scoring but I'd like ya to play three whole periods now. Disappointing game for the Habs.
The Leafs did a good job to come back against the Rangers like that, a team they have no business beating according to the stats ... big culture change in Toronto, it seems. You have to respect their desire to win (which will piss off fans who want them to tank so they can score in the draft), but I don't think they'll be able to sustain it through the season.
