Man, the NHL really has a hate on for adding any more Canadian teams.

Kansas City has a long and proud NHL history. Who can forget the Scouts?

Personally, I'm excited. I have my doubts that the city can support a team (either NHL or NBA long-term), but it'll be fun while it lasts. And at least we're not stealing a team with Canadian bloodlines.

p.s. The early rumor is the team name would be the Monarchs -- a nod to one of the great Negro League teams ever and along the same theme of the Chiefs and the Royals.

*Sigh*, yes it may be fun for you and the other 10,000 fans that would attend the games in the short-term, but I would much rather see a new team actually flourish in their market long-term than flounder in another so-called 'false-hockey-market' as the Preds, Lightning, Canes, Panthers, Thrashers, etc. have done in recent years.

It's embarassing to have so many franchices struggle immensely to sell the game in their respective cities, and because of this and several other Bettman missteps the NHL has become somewhat of a laughingstock in the States. Transplanting a team to KC would be yet another major mistake by the league. If a BASEBALL team can barely survive there, how the hell is an NHL team supposed to fare any better??
Yet the salary cap went up. Again. Which means league-wide revenues went up. Again.

And 50% of those revenues came from 20% of the franchises (the 6 Canadian teams).

Where'd you get that from?

I believe it's more like one-third of the total revenue that comes from the Canadian teams. It's still a valid point though. All six Canadian teams are net contributors to the revenue sharing pool. It makes one wonder why the league wouldn't be jumping at the chance to get another team in Canada, especially at the expense of a weak market like Nashville (or Kansas City, which, let's face it, probably won't be much different from Nashville).
Because the league works from the idea that hockey is as popular as its going to get in Canada, and they look to the States as a market to grow the sport.
Yes, but their experiences in Nashville, Florida, Atlanta, and Phoenix over the last decade or so seem to indicate that it is a failing strategy.

Why even think about putting a team in KC, where hockey has already failed once before, and is likely to fail again, when another team in Canada would sell out every game and make bags of money?

Well, Colorado comes to mind - where the Rockies once failed but the Avs have obviously been very successful.

As for the "xx% of revenue comes from xx teams", well, guess what - most businesses can say the same thing. Generally a disproportionate share of revenue comes from a disproportionate share of customers. In fact, it is so common that it is known as the 80/20 rule (meaning 80% of revenues are coming from 20% of customers).

But in this case, methinks the statement that 50% of NHL revenues comes from the 6 Canadian franchises is pure bunk.
Free Agent Day today, hopefully the Habs pick up someone good. I'm watching TSN's coverage and I find it hilarious that they rank Scott Gomez as the #1 guy available. He wasn't worth the 5 mill. he made last year and he's probably going to get more than that this year. I know he's supposed to be a good defensive player but he only had 60 points last year, there's no way he should make the same kind of money as guys like Drury and Briere. I'd like to see the Habs make a push for Briere or Zubris or Nylander althought I know I'm going to be dissapointed at the end of the day.
Bob McKenzie reports that the Habs have offered Daniel Briere a 6 year/$42 million deal.

I really hope he signs with us, if not at least were trying for a change. Montreal should consider Ouellet as well, he's young with potential, bagged 20 goals last year and probably wont cost a whole lot. Im just wondering what they plan to do if Souray bolts, I hope they can replace him with someone more stable at the back, Ill miss his big shot though, he can really pound the puck.

GO HABS!

I was hoping they would go after Scott Hannan
For what it's worth, Scott Gomez would be #1 on my list too, ahead of both Briere & Drury.

And Mathieu Schneider is the first big fish to fall, going to the Anaheim Ducks of all places. Of course this will start the speculation that Scott Niedermayer will be retiring...otherwise could the Ducks possible afford to have in the neighborhood of $20 million tied up in 3 defensemen?

Tom Poti to Washington for $3.5 mil/per, Richard Zednik & Bret MacLean to Florida...finally some signings are trickling through.

With Yashin having been bought out, Poti's new contract is the new Worst Contract Ever.

Looks like Briere is signing with the Flyers, I knew it would be too good to be true. Maybe the Habs can sign Yashin now instead.. :x  Gomez will definitely not come to Canada let alone Montreal, Drury is supposed to be going to L.A., not much left for top line centres. Every year the same shit, this team is really going nowhere, and if Souray leaves, which I think he will, were pretty much screwed for goal scoring.

sigh..
