I think the Oilers lack of committment to Smyth is disgusting not because of the end result, but because of how easily it could have been avoided earlier in the year. In the offseason lucrative extensions were given to players like Horcoff and Pisani, both who I might add have been huge letdowns this year. Ryan Smyth put $5mil on the table and the Oilers didn't want to go that high. Surprise, surprise he had a great year so of course the asking price goes up. The Oilers just kept putting it off until the last possible minute, probably because they expected Smyth to keep giving the home town discount. Contract negotions should have been ongoing with a guy like Smyth, a deal should have been signed in Dec at the latest. But I guess hindsight is 20/20.
Kevin Lowe said yesterday on Sportsnet their offer was for 5 years and they were very close in numbers with a no trade clause(the first in oiler history),they just weren't prepaired to pay ELITE player money for a VERY GOOD player.A five year deal close to 5 million a season seems fair no?not a discount.
They also had Don Meehan on the day before and from what little he said it seems Lowe was telling the truth.
It was probably the best move for the Oil anyway.

That was a late, elbow to the head and I wouldn't be surprised if he got 2-3 games or more (if they want to set an example).
Definitely late, and obviously suspension worthy. The other Leaf player had possession of the puck and the hit was uncalled for. As a player myself, it made me cringe just watching the replay.
I think the hit was complete BS, but the way this league operates, it wouldn't surprise me if nothing came of this.
Get rid of the instigator rule and these things might not be so common.
I will say that this hit is worse than the Drury hit in that Kaberle went into the boards. Drury's was at open ice. Same end result, players out with injuries for some time (Kaberle maybe even longer).
In the end, two teams lost some of their top players because of unnecessary hits. Sucks all around.

NO WAY you can eliminate hits to the head unless you take body checking out of hockey and that should never ever happen, and will never ever happen. I don't think the hit on Kaberle was an elbow, he had his arm down by his side when he hit him, but the hit was way late and and Janssen should be suspended for it. The ridiculous thing is that no one on the ice went after Jannsen when it happened. To me that's just gutless on the Leafs part.
that night was completely brutal. first of all it was late, with an elbow and to top it off his skates left the ice. i was so pissed off that there wasn't a call. the refs really need to open their eyes, i can't see how someone 10 feet away could miss that. as far as a suspension goes, i think he deserves 3-5 games but i won't be susrprised if he gets nothing. the NHL should allow refs to review the play when a player goes down like that to see if they missed a call or anything. he should have been tossed right there and then. i was so angry last night. but we won! :mrgreen:

But still no penalty. Nothing will come of this. And it's a shame. This crap needs to be out of the game. It look like more of an elbow hit than body. I'm all for hitting. It's part of the game but this stuff is chicken shit. Hope he comes back soon.

After moving to the Buffalo area, I don't know which team to cheer for tonight. The Sabres fever is really easy to catch but I'm still holding out hope that the Leafs can make it into the playoffs. Watching the Sabres-Canadiens game last night on the tube had me yelling and hollering, great stuff! :lol:

His letter still sounds ridiculous, not only because of its extremely hypocritical nature, but because the Drury hit and the Kaberle hit were different.

Not so much near-sighted as analytical. Timing: Neil hit Drury milliseconds after he passed the puck (ie the hit was well lined up before the puck was passed). Janssen hit Kaberle more than a second after the puck was passed. Elbows: Neil did not hit Drury with an elbow. Janssen, apparently, hit Kaberle with an elbow. Both timing and elbows are determinants of what makes a hit good or bad. Another thing that will be different about them, and indicative of the hit, is how long each will be out for. 'Nuff said.
