This is far from the first time that Balsillie has attempted to move an existing franchise to the Golden Horshoe.
In 2007 Balsillie attempted to purchase the Nashville Predators in an effort to re-locate the team to Hamilton, and even gave fans the opportunity to put a down payment on season tickets. The deal fell through leading to speculation that the league was not interested in Balsillie attempting to move a team before he actually owned them.
These new details come on the heels of a series of confusing reports last week that the NHL was in charge of the Coyotes, a report Coyotes president Doug Moss refuted. The league did not release a comment.
The Arizona Republic reported that the Coyotes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. Coyotes' CEO Jerry Moyes stated that they have done everything they can to try and keep the team in Arizona.
"Extensive efforts have been undertaken to sell the team, or attract additional investors, who would keep the team in Glendale," Moyes told the Republic.
In addition there seems to be a growing sentiment of bringing a second team to the Southern, Ontario region, recently deputy commissioner Bill Daly met with a group who are attempting to bring a second team to the Greater Toronto area. According to a release by the NHL following that meeting, that is not on the league's agenda.
"There is no consideration of bringing a second franchise to Toronto. We have no intention to expand in the foreseeable future, and there is no desire to relocate any of our existing franchises."
If Balsillie is successful in bringing the Coyotes to Canada it would mean that the franchise has come nearly full circle after the team was forced to relocate to the desert from Winnipeg in 1996.
Ya, Like Bettman would ever accept this!! It would mean one of his southern franchise experiments failed, and he'll see to none of that! I think it's a long shot.
I dont know why the NHL is so against this guy? Is it cause he's trying to call the shots or does Buttman just hate the guy? Maybe its because Buttman and co. are so determined to make hockey work in places it shouldnt really be?
With the constant rule changes, lockouts, failed tv contracts, struggling franchises, arenas that are half empty (see: Florida, Phoenix..etc) and in these bad economic times, you'd think they would be all over this idea.
A billionaire who just happens to be a huge hockey fan and is a successful businessman to boot, wants to buy a bankrupt team in a city that doesnt want hockey and move it to a rabid hockey market, that will make lots of money and be a stable franchise for years..hey stop me when I get to the bad part of all this. Isnt this what the NHL needs right now?

I'm sure Gary will do his best to stop it, but it might not be so easy this time. Because it's a bankruptcy filing a judge will ultimately be making the decisions here. So if the league doesn't want Balsillie to win the team, they'll have to find someone willing to make a comparable offer to keep the team in Phoenix (good luck with that). This is going to get interesting...

Let's say somehow Bettman (who claimed to be a supporter of Canadian hockey on The Hour :roll: ) does lose this one & a team does go to Southern Ont, I still feel bad for Winnipeg, who would definitely support a team no matter what, & it would sure add some excitement to the city!
A sad, sad day, and the NHL brass just watched it happen...

Bettman said he was "actually on my way to a meeting with Mr. Moyes (Tuesday) in Phoenix to go over the offers that we had for the club when I was advised of the bankruptcy petition, not because creditors were working and seeking redress for not being paid," but because there was an offer to buy the franchise and move it, apparently, from Jim Balsillie, co-CEO, Research In Motion, which makes the Blackberry.
"This is not about whether or not we want a franchise in southern Ontario and whether or not Mr. Balsillie would make a suitable owner that the (NHL) owners would approve," explained Bettman. "This is about the League rules and the enforceability of our rules, whether or not Mr. Moyes even had the authority to file a bankruptcy petition is something we're going to get into. This is more about the tactic and I think a challenge to League rules than it is about economic conditions of the club, which we believe, with new ownership and with accommodations the city of Glendale is prepared to make, we think can succeed."
In a League-issued statement, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, "We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club's constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League's 29 other Member Clubs."
The city of Glendale also issued its own statement to inform Coyotes fans: "The decision by the ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes to initiate bankruptcy proceedings without consultation or approval of the National Hockey League is an unfortunate turn of events for the NHL, the State of Arizona and the Coyotes' loyal fans. Even as the propriety of this unprecedented action is being thoroughly investigated by the NHL, city officials are working diligently to ensure that the public's interest is fully protected throughout this process."
I wish Gary had been that commited to keeping the Jets in the 'peg... for the Jets' loyal fans (a team that actually had fans)
