it sucks that i'm going to miss tonights game as I have night class to attend. Should be a good one. Hoping the Oilers come out on top, just so theres some canadian content for the third round

The talk is getting stronger regarding this. The big networks (NBC, ESPN) want a guarantee that the games will end within a specified time, and having shootouts in the playoffs is the only way to make sure this happens.
They do not want triple OT games and the like. :x
I'd probably stopped watching hockey if they ever started shootouts in the playoffs, i would lose total interest in the games.
Whats next, ESPN telling MLB that their games must end in a specific time, so after 9 innings, the game is decided with a homerun derby to make sure it doesn't run over the planned time slot?
Hopefully the Oilers kick some butt tonight!!

Cite a source, because there is no way in HELL the NHL would EVER agree to have shootouts replace OT in the postseason. It will never happen. Never.

they've mentioned it on every sports network..they want a set time for games so the american networks know what time the games will be off the air

Of course it's possible...Bettman is an American who wants to americanize the game. He's already talked about making the 3 periods into 4 quarters for more commercial endorsement....and we all remember the glowing puck

...he's also moved Winnipeg, Quebec City, and has tried to move Edmonton and Ottawa. If the networks offer him more money for shootouts in the playoffs, he'll consider it.

Um, last time I checked it usually an OWNER that wants to move a team. We're these owners CANADIAN.....? Then the fans get upset, they buy season tickets and the OWNER says ok for 2-3 years until it starts again. Then they move, or not. So it was ok for Hartford to move. For Cleveland, Kansas City, Oakland, Colorado to fold. What has being an American have to do with it.
Bettman refused to hear out Canadian buyers for those teams; he doesn't want any small market teams. He never gave them a chance, and anybody who knows hockey, knows that's the truth..he wanted to expand in the U.S.
As for Cleveland, KC, Oakland, these aren't hockey cities, which is why they weren't survivng (which isn't the case in Winnipeg and QC). It's kinda like Florida, Nashville right now...they're Not hockey cities. Plus, KC moved to Jersey, Hartford to Carolina (which is still a shame, but nonetheless american) and California has 3 hockey teams now anyway

They probably wish some baseball games go on and on. Hockey, on the other hand, is
still a tough sell in the States.

As opiated has stated, it's been on all the sports networks.
There is HUGE money to be made in selling the rights to an American network to broadcast the games. If NBC et al. want the games to end at a certain time (thru shootouts), then it may happen. They already dictate what days certain games (usually involving the big market teams) are played and what time they start.
But HNIC doesn't have a say in anything does it.................

cratch:
I'm not questioning whether the media is reporting on it, or whether the networks are asking for it. I am questioning whether the league will actually do it. And I stand by my original statement. It won't happen.
BTW - a network determining dates / times of games is a FAR CRY from a network determining how the outcome of a game is achieved. They have nothing to do with one another.

Well, since the NHL is a business first and a sport second, $$$ will be the determining factor. :?

They want the game to be played within a certain amount of time.. start the broadcast at such a such a time,
and end the broadcast at such a such a time. Having shootouts as opposed to OT achieves this. No 'far cry' at all.
I think whoever thinks this will actually happen has a pronounced case of antiBettmanitis. Don't get me wrong, I'm no ardent supporter of Bettman, but he HAS to be aware of the obvious massive backlash that awaits if they were to do it. it's not gonna happen.
