For sure, but Im a very unhappy camper this weekend. I was really hoping for something good to happen, I guess my expectations were too high.
Hamrlik fine, but Smolinski..that guys been passed around more than a thailand hooker, what message does that send to the team? Id been happier if he let one of the up and comers play instead. If your going to stink, stink big, just like the Flyers did last year. Maybe we can get a decent draft pick for a change, either in 08 or 09, we desperately need a John Tavares type player to build around.

I agree...it kinda sucks how Montreal can't even lure quality French Canadian players anymore! Where else in the NHL is a French Canadian gonna be able to speak french on a regular basis!? Philadelphia, San Jose!?!

The Calgary Flames signed forward Owen Nolan to a one-year deal contract.
Crazy happenings in the league on the weekend. Definitely some surprises... Briere with the Flyers not so much, but the money was... the Rangers getting Gomez AND Drury (they'll have a great offence but do they have enough D?)... Ryan Smyth with the Avalanche (that one completely blind-sided me)... Bertuzzi with the Ducks (you Colorado and Vancouver fans will have LOTS of chances to boo him now!)... Nolan with the Flames (where was he last year??? I don't even remember)... Edmonton's trade with Philly (Pitkanen's an upgrade on D but who's gonna score goals for the Oil?)... and last but not least from my point of view, Blake with the Leafs. I have to agree, as hard as it is, with those who have said JFJ has done a good job... Blake may finally be the winger to pair with Sundin, plus we have a legit number one goaltender... things could be interesting in Leafland next year. I couldn't believe one of my friends telling me that Blake was washed up... I was like, are you kidding, last year was his best ever! And he's the type of player who should still have some good years left in him, and at the same time the Leafs didn't sign him to a ridiculously long contract (like 8 years for Briere... hello, Flyers, what the hell?!).
Now, I guess the question as far as free agents go is, who's left?

I'm on the fence over the Blake deal..............He had a great season last year, but years prior were just "good"........
I don't know, the Leafs seem to like signing players with "potential" of returning to their former playing....could be boom or bust......for example, O'neil, Raycroft, the recent Bell deal with Toskala.............
Bell, used to be pretty good with a bright future..............guess only time will tell.......
I like having Toskala, but until he has the true pressures of a #1 goalie on him, we really don't know what he's made of.........
I was pretty upset when we missed out on Kariya, but when I saw what he signed for, I am kind of glad we passed...........
I hate the Blake deal...just a brutal team they are putting together. How come a team like the Rangers have 4 legitimate top forwards in Jagr, Gomez, Drury and Shanahan (you know he'll sign back there) and the Leafs have one. I'd be quite pissed if I was Sundin, if Jason Blake is all they get.
Well, the Oilers signed goaltender Mathieu Garon, who played 32 games for the Kings last year. What the fuck, Oilers? You have two perfectly serviceable 'tenders! I assume they'll unload Markannen so he can be a #1 somewhere else, but what's the point? It's not as if they'll be saving that much money. Yeesh.

Leafs lengthen Toskala's contract to three years. This year 1.375 million, the next two at 4 million.
Man, this is what got us into trouble with Raycroft. Start paying "starter goalie" salaries to someone who really needs to prove themselves first.
I think we have a better bet with Toskala, but it would have been nice to see him prove he deserves it instead of just giving it to him.

Agreed. But hopefully with him locked up for three years now they'll be able to dump Raycroft somewhere to free up a couple million in cap space. And while they're at it, Kubina too.
