I know what you mean about players these days. Here's my story:
I was playing in a Firefighter "A" division game a couple of weeks ago. Now this is some pretty competitive hockey, and some guys take it more seriously than others. Like there are fights and stuff, but this guy on their team did the most disgusting thing I've ever witnessed playing the game. Now, I'm in net and we're down 6-3, one of my defencemen was chirping one of their players, trying to get him to drop the gloves(earlier in the game, the two were going at it quite a bit). After asking him if he wanted to fight about 3 times(and the guy declining), he went to play the puck in the corner. The opposing play skated full out at him, jumped and crosschecked him from behind in the head into the glass, then after our player was on the ice, he two-handed him over the head breaking his stick, then jumped on top of him. I skated over and grabbed the guy to get him off, and a big scuffle ensued. I was in shock as to have seen this. Anyways long story short, 4 of our guys got 3 game suspensions(myself included), and the offending player on their team got a 5 year ban, after which he has to explain as to why he should be re-instated. It was kinda funny though, that no one on his team, wanted to stick up for him, and many of their guys apologized for his actions.
Some guys just shouldn't be playing the sport.
Apparently Habs fans are stuffing the ballot boxes like crazy for this year's all-star game in Montreal...
NEW YORK–The Montreal Canadiens are dominating NHL all-star voting.
As of Tuesday, Habs players led the balloting for all six starting spots on the Eastern Conference team, with defenceman Andrei Markov topping all vote-getters at 362,100.
Should the numbers hold through the Jan. 2 end of balloting, the Canadiens would become the first team to have the entire starting lineup elected to an all-star game.
The one-club high for fan-voted starters is five – Edmonton Oilers Wayne Gretzky, Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr at the 1986 all-star game in Hartford.
Fans can vote as often as they like online and Habs supporters are clearly pushing their players with the Jan. 25 contest in Montreal.
Mike Komisarek (325,076) is second among blue-liners to Markov, both well ahead of Boston's Zdeno Chara (147,287), while Alex Kovalev (324,898), Saku Koivu (322,008) and Alex Tanguay (318,482) are the top three forwards.
The trio comfortably leads superstars Sidney Crosby (237,213) and Evgeni Malkin (193,749), both of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Washington's Alex Ovechkin (147,895).
Goaltender Carey Price (352,602), meanwhile, has more than twice as many votes as Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury, who is second at 147,173.
I can't say i'm surprised the Habs are getting all the votes again this year, but leading in all 6 positions is a little crazy.
On the topic of Luongo, i know it's still very early in the season, but assuming he doesn't miss too much time, the only other goaltender i can see giving him a run for the Vezina is Henrik Lundqvist, i think one of those two will win it. Tim Thomas has had a great start to the season, but i just can't see the Bruins keeping up their current pace over the entire 82 games...maybe i'm wrong. And as i said it's still early, still all kinds of time for a Nabokov or a Backstrom or whoever else to jump into the mix.
And what is wrong with the Dallas Stars? 15th in the Western Conference?? 29th in the NHL?? Marty Turco has looked awful, the defense has been a mess, they aren't getting consistent goal scoring for the likes of Riberio, Richards, Modano, etc. I can't say i understood the Boucher for Sydor trade either.

Not to mention losing Morrow for the season, which isn't going to help things much in Dallas.

That is terrible. Thankfully, I've never been smashed like that myself. Some guy did give me a full on two handed slash (like he was swinging a golf club type of swing) a couple years ago, but at least it was just my leg and not my head or neck. Otherwise, I might have been killed. I may have exaggerated a little in my previous post, and it might not be the majority of players that play like that, but there are quite a few dirty rotten people who just have no regard for others.

Ahh, it always feels good to beat the Canucks, especially in back to back games. The air suddenly seems fresher, beer tastes better, and you get that wonderful feeling that the universe is unfolding as it should. Granted the 'Nucks are without their star goalie right now, but man did the Flames ever look good in those games. They played their system to a T and it worked well for them in both games. And it was nice to finally see one of the sisters get splattered all over the boards. What a beautiful moment that was. Thank you, Robyn Regehr!

Having looked at that clip, the hit wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. :what It's nice to see Robyn do something for the team, finally. He's been pretty awful this season from what I've seen. :rambo: Enjoy the wins over the Canucks....for now. :rambo: :rambo:

I think that what Avery said was funny, but as with most jokes, it was also very insulting. Don't think for one second though that 99.5% of the NHL players aren't using misogynistic terms like that one, and some much worse on a nightly basis, both in the heat of the battle and in the locker room/plane/hotel, whatever. The major difference in this case is that Avery practically called his own press conference and then performed his rehearsed schtick for the crowd, which was quite lame, and was the catalyst for all of this blow back.
My favourite hypocritical moment of denouncing what Avery said had to have came courtesy of Mike Modano. That guy is captain of team misogyny and whoredom. He's the last guy in the NHL that should be casting any stones.
All in all, there are no bigger collective group of pigs walking this earth than hockey players and most of them wouldn't even argue with you if you told them that to their face. Sean Avery just happens to be the one that steps into the steaming pile more often than not and gets the negative attention. Trust me there are guys that are WAY worse than him. Think about it, everyone knows someone who knows someone that plays in the NHL or played Major Junior hockey and what would you say their major character flaw is...I imagine you are all coming up with the same thing.

I play in a men's league in Edmonton, and some of the stuff I hear out on the ice in 100 times worse than what Avery said... and we're not even playing for the Cup! We're playing for a divisional trophy that I don't think is allowed out of the arena if we win!
Fact is, a lot of nasty stuff is said on the ice (even I have said stuff I regret, not that often mind you). If Avery would have just saved it for the ice, we wouldn't be using forum space on this right now, & Avery wouldn't have had to see Betmann today in those ridiculous shades!
So Avery has to take anger management counselling.
