Wow, as an American, it's interesting to see Habs fans and Leafs fans go at it. Especially on a friendly site like hipbase. As a Ranger fan, my hate is split between the heart breaking Devils, the pain in-the-ass Islanders and those a88f88k goons the Flyers...

As you've just aptly demonstrated, it's virtually impossible to forget about hope - in one fashion or another - when you are a sports fan.

Touche'!

You're right cfern its impossible, Im sure we could go back and forth all nite with this topic. Maybe there's something deeper here, or its just one of those things that makes us hockey loving Canadiens..its in our blood!

Definitely no hate or animosity on my part, its sports not personal. I love my hockey team and I stand by them win or lose no matter what. In fact cfern is the hipbaser who's opinion I respect he always delivers the straight goods and isnt a jerk about it which I like, I'd never take a cheap shot at him. Me I just like to have fun on the web and push a few buttons, for laughs nothing more.

Go Habs Go!!!
cferneyh Wrote:Out of curiousity - and I'm being completely serious here - when did Habs fan last have any semblance of hope? Given that the last 14 years have provided you Habs fans with a whopping three playoff series wins, I'm just wondering......

Oddly enough, if you reverse 14, you get 41.

My father retired last week after 41 years at UWO. At the party, during his speech, he pointed out that during his entire career, he'd never seen the Leafs win the cup.

So the good news for me is that I've seen the Habs win the cup, what, six times? Leafs fans of my generation will be lightning-struck-lottery-winner lucky to see their team win it once.

And please, cfern, you call the Leafs' annual mock-heroic playoff run cause for hope?
skippy the wonder dog Wrote:And please, cfern, you call the Leafs' annual mock-heroic playoff run cause for hope?

Again, completely missing the point. I didn't ask how long it has been since the Leafs last won the Cup. Nor did I ask how many Cups the Habs have won in your lifetime. I asked when have Habs fans last had hope.

And yeah, I'd say a couple of final four appearances over the last decade has certainly provided Leaf fans with more hope than any Habs fan has had over the same timeframe. Unless you've been so beaten down by the lack of success over the last 14 years that now simply qualifying for the playoffs provides some comforting level of hope.

But, I really enjoy how asking Habs fans when they most recently had some hope that their team might actually compete for the Cup leads to the same old regurgitation of "40 years", as though that is somehow relevant to the question at hand.

Skippy, next tell me about how cool you were in high school and how you desperately pine for the good 'ole days.

cfern's opinion is always well put, but it doesn't mean he's not wrong sometimes...but he'll never admit to that.

You're right though Skippy. I've seen the Habs win the Cup twice in my lifetime, and I'll take that over a "final four" appearance any day! The fact is, if you don't win, even in the finals, you're the first loser. True enough, the Habs have not done much in recent years, but they're improving, and giving us hope so far this season. Go Habs.

So because you were in high school more recently than I, it's legitimate for you to talk about how cool you were in high school?

Nope.

How do you feel about this season? Not any better than a Habs fan, unless you've got sanity troubles.

How do you feel about 2012?
skippy the wonder dog Wrote:So because you were in high school more recently than I, it's legitimate for you to talk about how cool you were in high school?

Huh? How is stating that Leaf fans have had more reason for hope over the last decade equal to talking about the Habs having won the Cup in the late 70s or 1986 or 1993? I'm not bragging about anything - I'm simply stated that the Leafs have been more competitive recently, hence, more optimism for hope. Of course, by recently I'm not talking about this week.

skippy the wonder dog Wrote:How do you feel about this season? Not any better than a Habs fan, unless you've got sanity troubles.

Not terribly great. Of course, if you go back to my original post I said the odd glimmer of hope, not wildly optimistic enthusiasm each and every year!!!!!!!!!!!!.

skippy the wonder dog Wrote:How do you feel about 2012?

I feel great about 2012, because McCabe, Kubina and Blake will be off the books.

Anyway, I really do get it that you love to argue just for arguments sake, but I really do think you need to go back and re-read my original post.

Hmmm, well, I guess the Globe didn't think about McCabe....

It's not a matter of arguing for argument's sake.

It's a matter of mocking Leafs fans for mockery's sake.

Confusedcratch:

I've got no problem admitting when I'm wrong. I've done it before in this forum, and I'll do it again.

But please do me a favour and keep your obsession to the Leafs, not me - I've already got a Hipbase stalker - I don't need two.

Let me edit that - there is always room for new Leaf fans.
can't we all just get along and hate Ottawa together?
The Darkest Canuck Wrote:can't we all just get along and hate Ottawa together?

Do Hab's fans really despise the Senators? Without the obnoxious media hype, the past playoff historia, and the generally 'Ottawa' only broadcasting of the games the two play, I can't see why Hab's fans really have any reason to say anything damaging about the Senators, even given the understanding that the two are division rivals.

The Toronto/Ottawa rivalry is quite intense. Clearly Ottawa fans find distaste with the Toronto franchise for past playoff failures, and Toronto fans find displeasure knowing that casual Ottawa fans can afford a ticket, that Ottawa has had winning seasons for nearly a decade, and that Alfredsson is a better captain than Sundin (how you doing Cferneyh).

Can't we all just hate Buffalo? As an Ottawa fan, I congratulate Monteal on it's somewhat surprising, but ultimately very successful start.

And sorry to bring this up Cferneyh, but I had to retract my comment from late last year...

Flashes of Lalime in the playoffs in 2004... ouch...
das_hips Wrote:Alfredsson is a better captain than Sundin (how you doing Cferneyh).

Umm, based on what criteria? Chris Neil's? Alfredsson has won one title in his career (Olympic gold) and that team was captained by......wait for it.......Sundin!

das_hips Wrote:Can't we all just hate Buffalo?

Sure......but all their fans from last season seem to have disappeared.

Uncle!

I take it all back. Raycroft is the worst goalie in the NHL. Here's my question - is Emery's behaviour off the ice the reason why the Sens signed Gerber in the first place? It seemed to be such a weird move at the time, but it is making a lot more sense now.

Odd, that.

I'm waiting patiently for them to explain why "we" are underperforming.
