The NHL should just go to no touch icing. What the f*ck is wrong with them? :nooooo Now, the referees are gonna have to make judgement calls on whether or not the player went to touch the puck or just eliminate his man. We all know how pathetic NHL referees are at making judgement calls.

Agreed...although Pierre McGuire was on the radio yesterday and said the way the new rule will be enforced is essentially how it's done in the USHL (or was it the ECHL - I can't remember)...basically the linesmen will judge the play when the players racing for the puck are at about the top of the circle - if the offensive player is ahead he'll let them go for it, but if not it will be called immediately (i.e. no touch icing at that point). Not sure if this is actually true of if Pierre just made it up, but it sounds like a reasonable compromise.
Leafs give Habs OK to talk to Sundin:

Here those Toronto fans slaver and snarl.... Good deal for the Habs to get Sundin, he's a great player, they need more strength at centre and he's big and strong behind the net. The impact player they're looking for.

But the Habs with all those good young prospects, exactly what the Leafs need to build on, and not a one of them Toronto-bound.... that's gotta hurt.

If this goes through... I'll have a very hard time cheering for Sundin; I've had too many years with him as the enemy, calling him Skeletor. Makes me miss the good ole days before I was born, where players would stay with a team for their career. Wink
I think there's still gotta be at least a couple teams interested if it was a decent package...

Tampa Bay? LA? Columbus? St. Louis?

is Raycroft really THAT bad? I didn't see much of him this past season, so i don't even know any more.

Well if the Habs are able to sign him then the Leafs will get some form of compensation - though likely nothing more than a 3rd or 4th rounder (i.e. they'll have to trade his rights to the Habs). I'll reserve further comment on Mats until we see how this all shakes out though.

Lots of other majors dealings so far tonight. Jokinen to the Coyotes, Cammalleri to the Flames, Tanguay to the Habs, and Umberger to the Jackets. And a nice move by the Leafs to jump up two spots to pick Luke Schenn. :thumb:

If they make the deal before July 1...

I have to think there's something here. Fletcher has given Gainey the exclusive right to talk to Sundin ... if Fletcher can't resign Sundin, he has to get something for him ... Fletcher has to have had conversations with Sundin about this ... Sundin would be public enemy number one in TO if he signed anywhere as a UFA, but if TO gets something for his rights then he can at least say he was thinking of the team....

Montreal with Sundin and Tanguay, Kovalev playing up to last season's level again, and all those good young players ... that would be quite a team.

Indeed. Definitely a couple of wildcards there though - can Kovalev do it again (consider me skeptical).....and can Tanguay find his game once again.

I had a good chuckle at Bob McKenzie saying that Tanguay will get "better opportunities" in Montreal. Tanguay spent a large part of the season on a line with Iginla, and was always on one of the top two PP units. If you can't get your sh*t together playing with one of the top five players in the game, then who are you going to get it together with?!?

As for Mats.........say it ain't so Mats........say it ain't so.......
Gainey obviously believes Tanguay will rediscover his hockey muse.

Gainey wants to be in the Stanley Cup finals for the centennial, so he has a lot at stake in this. He seems to have been treating last season as a kind of test run.
Raycroft and Wellwood have been put on waivers, first step to being bought out.......

IMO, let them play for the Marlies and get rid of their salary completely during this season instead of buying them out..........its not like the cap is going to be a problem this year........

They don't have to buy Wellwood out as his contract is up. They'll simply not offer him a contract and then he'll become a UFA. Raycroft's salary is so small it really doesn't matter whether they buy him out now and take a two-year cap hit or keep him and send him to the Marlies. All that matters is that he doesn't play for the Leafs :thumb:

Wellwood's fall from grace has been Emery-esque. Last season he was expected to be the #2 center. A few months later he's looking for a job (even though the Leafs' #1 center could retire or be elsewhere next season).

Guess it is a lesson for young players who feel that they can take the summer off and show up at camp out of shape.

As for Raycroft, the PA should agree to a special circumstances where a player is so frickin' awful, that he is damaging the term "professional hockey player" and as such, that player has to give money back to his employer, and not count against the cap when he's bought out. Call it "The Raycroft Clause".

See ya Raycroft. Thanks for nothing. Enjoy whatever Tier 2 league in Europe you end up at.
Honestly, he was much better when he played for the wolves, lol.
Tucker is gone too:

I'm inordinately excited about Kelly Buchberger joining the Oilers coaching staff. I love that guy!
