some people just dont get it
i feel sorry for those people who pigeonhole themselves and the hip.
"THIS ALBUM DOESNT SOUND LIK OLD HIP AND THAT MEANS IT SUX THE BALLZ"
jesus christ, live a little
imho, this is the best hip record since phantom power. hands down.
My real late thoughts (do people ever read this thread anymore?):
It's a nice disc - 3 stars.
Gord D. and the drums sound great.
The strings are not needed anywhere and fill sonic space that would be better served empty so the guitars (especially acoustic) have room to breathe. It seems to me the strings are there 'just because' and to be 'different' when guitars, either electric or acoustic, would work.
Other notes:
Moon - I would have made the opening acoustic guitar part a bit longer and made it a separate song (called "Daybreak").
The extended 'yeah' and 'oh,oh,oh' aren't necessary and don't really sound like Paul and Gord S.
Honey - The sounds at 1.40 and 1.50 aren't necessary.
Recluse - the beginning 0.10 and ending from 3.28 is silly, the 'whoa's or whatever at 2.20 isn't necessary.
Coffee - the trumpet is silly (again, probably there to be 'different'), a bluesy guitar solo would have been better.
Exact - that crazy 'swirling' sound isn't necessary.
Furrows - the backing vocals don't sound like Paul and Gord S. This is a good use of an 'alternate' instrument, the mandolin.
Speed - again, good use of 'alternate' instrument, the B3.
Frozen - the 'whoa-oh's or whatever it is could be something else or lower in the mix.
Love - that high sound first at 2.05 is not necessary, same with the ending drone.
Country - backing vocals first at 1.20 are silly, 4.10 to the ending is just silly, bombastic, and pretentious (sounds like something Spinal Tap would do, like Just Begin Again).
Rock should NOT produce the next disc. Two is enough.
I really want to hear all these live.

that is right.. it is YOUR opinion.
MY opinion is that i don't like it.
Decided to fire up "That Night in TO" as a bit of spring training for the approaching weeks. Track #2, "F,C" has a "Love is a First" rant. Wow, how long does Gord let these things simmer? 2004 to 2008-09? As always, cool to stumble upon how a song came from an earlier "idea"!

Wow, I disagree with pretty much everything you just mentioned. Different strokes indeed. Personally I think it's their best album since Phantom Power, and I love all the extra sonic touches. Unlike yourself, I really dig this album
because it's different. The fact that it's unlike anything they've ever done before is part of it's charm.
This is the worst hip album of all time. Worse then watching Jenna drunkenly dancing at the new years hip show in chicago a few years ago.

Not sure if you were serious but thats just not cool.... we all have our opinions of the album but lets not diss our fellow hip mates (and mateses)..... :thumb:

I like watching drunk girls dance at shows.
And I like the album.
Jenna - will you be drunkenly dancing at the show tonight?

Yeah, not cool.
Unless you guys are in the same car driving up to the show and it's an inside joke or something....
in that case, banter away.
Sorry I don't mean to be raggin on someones "inside joke"..... fire at will guys!!!! :nooooo
Oh and to all you who are going to the show tonight or getting the play by play here on hipbase..... I am envious....I won't be able to follow along until late late tonight.....my band actually plays tonight (shameless and useless plug...lol)
There will be drinking and there will be dancing, but I will be well behaved. If anyone is videoing, be sure to send Mick a copy, since he enjoyed my last performance so much.

. Spottrax, you're not stepping on anyone's joke. It was just a nasty, unnecessary jab.

Absolutely amazing show.
So , I became a fan. Bought all the albums and I did like them. But there is no album I loved end to end. Mostly, there were 3-4 songs on each that were amazing.
Then Phantom Power came out and I really didn't get it.
I then moved to the states and forgot about the Hip (well, not exactly-I saw them twice live down here). During my last trip home, I swung by the HMV and saw a bunch more Hip albums and bought them (In Violet Light, World Container, and In Between Evolutions). Listened to each twice and hated it all.
Seriously.
I did like That Night In Toronto. But listening to those CD's, Gord's voice sounded awful and out of tune.
It seemed to me that the glory days were gone.
I am not sure why I ordered We Are The Same. It was likely the free Live From The Vault 4 CD that pushed me over the edge. I then forgot about the order. Was surprised to get a package in the mail yesterday. It was the We Are The Same.
First thing I did was listen to...Live From The Vault. Amazing classic show. Great recording! This is the Hip I fell in love with.
I finally, and rather indifferently put We Are The Same in the CD player.
So, this review is from a casual fan. One that likes the band live, and like some of their songs, but has never been a diehard fan.
This may be the best Hip album I have ever heard (although I still favor Fully Completely). Gord's voice sounds solid-and in tune. The album is mellow, but beautiful and haunting. I really like everything on this album. Every song is on my playlist.
Thanks Gord. I'm a fan again...
Cool review and good to hear that it is resonating well with 'fair-weather' fans or fans from back in the day.
I gotta say that I am one of the guys that really likes the strings/horns etc... I keep trying to not like it as I tend to lean towards the Traditional Hip sound. However, this is showing the evolution of the band. They are doing new and different things. Will they do another record with the old school traditional sound...maybe!! I hope so!! But I for one am along for the ride and am loving every minute of it.
