ya it wasn't as widely available as you'd think, obviously TTH aren't mainstream. I found it in a We Are The Same.zip file, no mention of the band name, and not available on every one of those sites where people often download things from...

Odd to be in a zip file like that... Had to give'r a virus scan Tongue
On two listens, this album sucks ass. All the worst qualities of WC repeated and doubled.

Lyrics= terrible and cliche
Music = bloated and extravagant

Just awful. I can hear the inklings of what sounds like a great record totally shat upon by the production and the 'straightforward' lyrics
1) I don't know why everyone is talking about a low volume, low quality version... I seem to have a perfectly normal rip

2) Bob Rock sucks. Everything is always so god damned over produced everywhere he goes! All I need is for TTH to move on from him and all 3 of my favourite bands will have experienced and dumped Bob Rock. I can't wait! Well, Tool has overtaken OLP as my 3rd favourite band.
andy42g Wrote:The Last Recluse - Not too fussed on this one, so far. Gord sounds like Morrisey at some points which is just (IMHO)... horrible.

It's interesting how tastes can differ so much among Hip fans. The Last Recluse is easily my favorite song on the album.

You're giving up after only 2 listens? That's a shame. And I totally disagree regarding the lyrics. There are plenty of classic Gordisms sprinkled all over this record. So what if some of the lyrics are a bit straight-forward. Who says every Gord Downie lyric has to be a dense labyrinth of complex poetry? Some of the greatest songs ever written feature simple, straight-forward lyrics. As for the production, I too was a bit turned off by the extra layers of instruments at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I think it suits the material perfectly. Other than DFN, I'd say this is the boldest and bravest album the Hip have ever made.

To each their own.

Well to be fair, the Armageddon soundtrack also has "Naveed" by Our Lady Peace on it.*

*I know this because I have an insane, deadbeat uncle who one year swooped in on Christmas Day and gave me the Armageddon Soundtrack (this was about three years after the movie came out) and a pack of about three dozen random pens tied together with a rubber band. I still have that album, too.

...and what happened to the pens? :lol:

Totally off topic but I think only my friend can top the hilarity of hat gift giving experience. He was about nine years old, excitedly ripping into presents on Christmas morning when he came across one labeled not "from Santa" but rather "From SATAN". Either his mother lost all of the spelling bee's in grade school or she's got the most hilarious twisted sense of humour that I've ever come across. Let's just say it's left him a little scarred. :twisted:
I would like Frozen in my tracks more if it was not for the stupid woh ohh in the background god I hate it. The rest of the album is outstanding...Can't wait for it live and maybe they will lose the background crap on this song.
cferneyh Wrote:I've given it multiple listens now, and I'm very, very disappointed. I really want to like it, especially after reading all of the glowing reviews here, but this easily settles to the bottom of my Hip Album Rankings. I hope it grows on me, but I'm doubtful. I really can't stand the strings. It ruins the songs.

trevor Wrote:I've read a lot in this thread about how Gord sounds great vocally - more melodic then previous albums. But what I haven't read is any opinions on how you guys think Gord will be able to translate that to the live show? I mean, let's be honest, the last couple of tours have found Gord screaming lyrics at times, more so than earlier days. I sincerely hope that this doesn't happen with this record - especially with what is being described as layers upon layers of complexity of tone, melody and lyrical genius.

My 5 cent review. There are a few highlights, but for me, the strings are overbearing on some of the tunes. I miss a deep base groove laid down by sinclair, I like acoustic guitar parts with the electic thrown in for the build up- groove down, Johnny's doesn;t seem to stretch his ability on a single song? Gord's vox are terrific- but I don;t think repeatable live.

3 stars.
Unfortunately I just can't get into this one so far. I really had my hopes up after hearing Morning Moon, so this is a big let-down. Speed River and parts of The Depression Suite are somewhat inspired, but for the most part the album just depresses me. Gord's lyrics definitely aren't what they used to be. I'd really like to see him take a step back and work on some solo material again (I heard talk of him recording with the Sadies, which would be great) before recording with the Hip again. And please, no more Bob Rock.
i cannot understand how some people are disappointed by this album. i mean, i respect that opinion but i just really dont get how they cant like this album. its a big departure, sure. i'll agree. when i first heard morning moon i thought, man this is so mellow and nice i hope the rest of the album is like this. and it is. i dont think its overproduced and i dont think its too "busy". like radiohead says, everything in its right place. it all adds up to one of the hips best efforts. i havent stopped listening to it since it leaked, in my car, on my iphone, at home, at my work computer. this album just blows me away how perfect it is. i have some really eclectic tastes and enjoy a wide variety of music, so many thats why im enjoying the strings and mandolins and violins and trumpets more than others.

this album is a perfect 10 for me. i cannot wait to enjoy it around the campfire in algonquin park. for whatever reason the hip are my soundtrack when im camping in algonquin. canadiana hand in hand i suppose. this disc is going to be well played this summer.

bless you boys

Seriously? I figured Furrows would be the one song that everybody here could agree on. That tune just kicks so much ass, especially when the drums kick in during the 2nd verse and Robby lets loose with that rippin' solo. Right now it's my second favorite on the album behind The Last Recluse.

Im probably in the minority, but i think furrows is my least favorite song on the album and ive grown to love pretty much all of the songs on it at this point. for some reason the song's melody comes off as really cheesey to me. that roaring solo is the saving grace for the song, but other than that and a catchy chorus, ive not really warmed up to the song.......YET.
You people are silly.
