I liked this album when I bought, but since then have bought the entire discography, and just isn't up to par with In Between Evolution, let alone the early albums.
That being said, it is downright amazing live. I was so surprised by Yer Not The Ocean and In View when I heard them live. Bob Rock really dropped the ball IMO.
My favourite songs are the last three.
I have a question about World Container.
On the credits you can read that some background vocals were sung by Lucy, Mandy and Sally Rock.
Who are they and are they family/daughters of Bob Rock?
Any help would be appreciated.

That's my brother's blog -- he does a ton of stuff on there strictly for comedic content/fun with words. Although he loves the Hip to be sure.

I was in first year Uni when the album came out... had just started.
Decided to rebel and take a secret trip to Montreal to see the Metropolis shows, and hide that from my parents lol
(They wouldn't have approved that their money was going towards a Hip weekend)... but I don't regret it one bit! (And they have since learned about this excursion).
As for World Container.. Holy hell, do you guys remember the uproar when In View came out?! Seems hilarious to me now.
Back in those days, The Hip playing Fiddler's Green was still a running joke, and everyone was convinced it would never happen.
There were daily soundboard songs being posted to The Hip site at that time, and capturing each song with a stream recorder was always a #1 priority of the day for me! (That, and annoying the fuck out of Dave to post a soundboard from my first Hip show...).
Oh how the times have changed, but my Hip love has remained in tact and strong!
...And my parents said I would regret a Hip tattoo in 2 years time.... PFFFT. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Good Lord, how is it possible this album is 9 years old now!?!?! Seems like it was yesterday when the Summer Fling tour came around and no recordings were being posted until the album came out. Plus watching setlists to see what cover song they were pulling out at each stop on the official tour. Lucked in to see "Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" in Cleveland. Unlucked in to seeing "Diamond Dogs" at the Toronto show. Nothing against the Bowie cover itself, it was just that I had myself 100% convinced they were going to pull out a cover of "Limelight" in Toronto. Wishful thinking I guess.
Oh, and in my own personal opinion, "In View" has NOT gotten any better with age. Still a song best left in the dust. Unless I have to go to the bathroom at a concert, then it is a good break song.

Their Diamond Dogs cover was actually one of my favourites from the whole tour...
On that tour I got to see The Who's Substitute (Fredericton); Bowie's Queen Bitch (Halifax); and the best one... The Clash's Train In Vain (Charlottetown).
I saw the Sydney show on that tour too, but there was no cover performed that night.
Saw them at the Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge before the album came out. That show still stands as the single greatest Hip show I've ever witnessed. A massive hail storm temporarily derailed the festival. It took them about an hour to shovel the snow off the stage before the Hip could go on (they were sandwiched on the bill between Neko Case and the Shins). As a result, the Hip's set was cut short and they only got to play 8 songs. But holy shit, what a set! The energy coming off the stage was fierce, and Gord was in full-on beast mode, ranting and cracking jokes throughout the whole thing. Such a great day.

I still love World Container and I think it is perhaps their best album. Yep, I said it. I was also at the Sasquatch show. Something happened that day that cannot be captured on video or audio. The energy that was blasting from the band was incredible. I don't know if it was the location or weather or the audience but it was the most intense Hip set I have ever witnessed.

One of their worst efforts IMHO. I thought so at the time, and subsequent years have not changed my mind. Bob Rock's bloated production sensibility tips the band over into the realm of tasteless grotesquerie, while Gord unfortunately over-sings material that - unlike NFPA - generally doesn't merit it. Basically, I take 'The Kids Don't Get It,' 'The Drop Off,' and 'Family Band' as keepers, while 'The Lonely End of the Rink' gets honourable mention as a fine song that really needed a lower-key treatment better suited to its intimate sentiments, but remains listenable. The rest is either forgettable or outright appalling. Basically an abomination in the Hip catalogue.
