I'm glad someone agrees with me. Pretend could easily have been the best song on the album. I also agree that Gord oversings this album, but in general I've felt he's oversung quite a bit at live shows these past few years so I guess I've gotten used to it.
I don't know how some of these songs will come off live because of Gords oversinging Live ( he really has been oversinging the last few years). He really gives it on this album, he won't be able to pull it off live with the same effect. Singing in a studio in Hawaii with all the technical gizmos to help you out is different than live in front of a live audience.
I'm not to worried, I think a stong album was the most important factor. Not how or if they will be done live.

True fans will be critical of the Band if they feel it is Valid to them. There is nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different opinions.

Gord Downie OWNS THIS RECORD! I completely disagree with people saying he is oversinging. He completely hits this one out of the ballpark. It is Gord's shining moment and he stands head and shoulders above all other bandmates. I don't think this is a bad thing, though. We all love Robby, Gord S, Johnny, and Paul but Gord is the star of the show and always will be. It bugs me when Gord misses a lot of lyrics when singing live but he makes up for it with his live energy and effort. On this album, Gord delivers in every way possible. I don't think it's possible for a current lead singer to measure up to Gord's performance on this cd. The lyrics are not his strongest on this cd but his singing is off the charts tremendous.

agreed!!! although i think the lyrics are quite strong as well, but his vocals are through the roof...never sounded better

:thumb: ...for me the vocal moment that stands out is "why don't you love me like you used to" near the end of "last night i dreamed"..so powerful...that and "holy fuck it's jesus" in "the drop off"

That's a valid opinion. I differ because I don't mind him signing a lot. The more Gord, the better, unless he gets too wordy like moments during M@W.
The lyrics are simpler which I would think make it easier for him to belt it out, not at tongue twisting as some of his other stuff. I don't think he over sings on the album, but it will get ovesung live I think. No matter though, that band will pull through.

When I heard In View I too thought it could work in the US; but after hearing the rest, I don't think so. Not to say I don't like it, but I've been avidly playing Tragically Hip for my American friends for years and only a few have caught the same fev-ah.
The Kids Don't Get It isn't as crazy as Gord's vocals in Drop Off. ("Holy fuck it's Jesus!") but it's one of my favourites.

So far I have counted three references to singers/songwriters - two in name Dylan and Mercury and one via the lyric - Lennon...
