Are You Ready
Coconut Cream
Butts Wigglin
All Canadian Surf Club
"In View" probably belongs on that list as well, but I enjoy it way too much. As for World Container, I agree it's no masterpiece, but it's a damn good record and a glorious burst of energy and creativity from a band that was spinning their wheels on their last two albums. Like many of you, I have issues with some of the production decisions made by Mr. Rock (particularly with the title track), but overall I think it's their most cohesive and focused album since Phantom Power. It's been well over a year and I still listen to it at least once a week. For me that's the mark of a good album. It holds up nicely.
I'm a bigger hip fan than all of you. If you disagree with me then you're wrong.
I like their music better than you do.
I think I look at it two ways, you can like/dislike them critically, and/or you can like/dislike them personally. Personally, I like every Hip album; they're made by some of my favorite artists and musicians that I respect, I always enjoy seeing them in person, and I feel a connection to their music. That for me will be unconditional. On the other hand, if I were to decide upon a set criteria to judge each album, some would inevitably fall short. However, I wouldn't know a set of criteria on which anyone could decide.
Back to this thread: A new album will be sure to hold surprises, likely to run a rift through some debates. But it will still be Hip, however you manage to enjoy it. I'm especially looking forward to their next album. I think making World Container was important for them, to expand their process of songwriting/recording, and I'm betting they've got some great new ideas up their sleeves to compliment their new knowledge. The long tour will also likely have them buzzing with new ideas for how to rock their fans.

Lyrically, perhaps....though not nearly as cheesy as View, imo.
Musically? Not even close.

I think my definition of "cheesy" must be off-kilter with the rest of you.
I always considered it to mean "corny".
Are You Ready and Surf Club may qualify. But i guess it boils down to opinion, and in mine, View is corniest of all, both lyrically and musically.
Coconut Cream is just *bad*.
But Butts Wigglin?

Somethings On, i've never heard..
..but Something On is a GREAT tune

I don't know, I've just never liked that song and I've always found it cheesy. It originally appeared on the Kids in the Hall Brain Candy soundtrack, and I remember being pretty disappointed when they included it on TATH. Anyways...different strokes for different folks.

Agree for the most part about WC, as in I listen to it at least once a week. But to me, and i'm in the minority, IBE is better, and second only to DFN in its greatness...but that's the beauty of The Hip..we all love them..every single one of us on this board...but we all have our own reasons for loving, and continue to find new reasons for our love. And for me, that's the sign of a GREAT band, and why this thread and countless others like it, could go on (and probably will) forever without an end.

50 MC is too, imo. Kickin' riff structure and a sweet lead by Bobby. And the lyrics are a memorial to the tragic death of the player whose last goal scored "won the Leafs the Cup".
I don't get what's "cheesy" about that at all.
Once again, I must stress that all you "Coconut Cream" haters just don't get it. I am 100% serious in saying that it's probably the best song they've ever written.

How so? I'm serious. How is it better than anything else they've ever written?
I'd go as far as to guess that they're a bit ashamed of it. It smacks of immature crap. Sorry.

I think Coconut Cream isn't meant to be taken seriously...I really don't...Gord's havin a laugh

Well, I'd certainly agree that the
movie was terrible...and deserving of a "cheesy" slam.

I always thought the same. I sure hope that's the case.
