The last Hip album recorded at the Bathouse was a masterpiece.
laliber Wrote:For better or worse, throwaway or in heavy rotation on Umberto Eco’s ipod, CC generates a lot of bytes on the base. Personally, I had never really gave the song much thought, but now, when I listen to it I hear the steady stream of numerous naysayers battling it out with its few staunch defenders.

on the other hand, I think we can all agree that Butts Wigglin sucks…
No, we can't. That song is flawless and it's even better if you've seen Brain Candy.
Jenna — if you hate the musical progression on Coconut Cream, blame Johnny it's his!

Quote:According to GD: "Johnny is really an interesting finger-picking guitar player (it's his riff on Coconut Cream)"

I've never come across any of the boys mention that they hated the tune. Regardless, it was dropped from the setlist pretty early. July 30, 1997 was the last time they played it (according to hipbase) At Darien Lake — wow I was at that show.

Musically, I can't help but think that it sounds a bit broken-social-scenish, and in that sense I like it.
Lucky!
Gortron Wrote:Didn't some of the band members say in an interview that it is one of their worst songs?

Not sure exactly what they said but they pretty much indicated it wasn't their best effort.

Hey Gortron — nah, they never said they hated it — but they've alluded to the fact that's its not a fan favourite...

I don't know for sure that the new record is being recorded at the Bathouse. I was just going by what Robby said in the interview. He mentioned that they were "trying" to entice Bob Rock to record them in Bath. He didn't say if it was actually happening or not. That would be cool if it was.
longseason Wrote:I can't accept that he simply 'blew it' on this song....

That's where we differ. I can.

Honestly, on occasion I believe he simply cobbles together nonsense phrases from his notebook, phrases he happens to like the sound of, or makes inside jokes that no one outside the band will get.

Lyrics aside, though, I just plain don't like the song. Like Esthete, I find it irritating. Which means, of course, that the lyrics must be crap. Smile
screw_ball Wrote:I can still say, with full conviction, that "Coconut Cream" is the best song they have ever recorded.

Now I don't know about that...there is Sherpa to think about.
Bizarre, bizarre thread... Confusedhock: Just amazing where these things go sometimes. For the record, I don't mind Coconut Cream, I don't find it as irritating as some obviously do, but it will never be an all-time favourite of mine either. I'm certainly impressed (and a little scared, possibly?) by the level of thought that some have put into their interpretation of this song, but I always subscribed to the "throw-away" feel of the song theory so I never personally thought it necessary to study it in great detail. Just something mildly amusing to sit through, a gap-filler between two of my favourite songs on TATH, Apartment Song and Let's Stay Engaged.

There. Wrap your head around that!

Anyway, I don't mind Rock returning as producer if the results end up as enjoyable to me as World Container is (except Pretend, I never could end up liking that song... sounds too much like bad "lounge-lizard" music). It definitely would be cool if the guys convinced Rock to come to the Bathouse to produce the new record, it would be intriguing to see what would come of such a collaboration.

I'm betting Bob is hesitant to do it, because he would have to lug his 852785728746 drum mics out there when he already has them all set up at home Tongue
I have an independent mind and am not brainwashed by the cable news stations. I strongly dislike "Coconut Cream" and honestly believe that you (longseason) spent WAY more time thinking about the song than Gord Downie ever did. Big Grin Kudos to you for that. :thumb:
Coconut Cream is just a greasy little song. Nothing more can be siad about it.
I come to this thread every time expecting to be teased with some new information about the new album. Without fail, what do I get? Coconut Cream. Lame!

I can't recall suggesting that those who don't like 'Coconut Cream' weren't independent thinkers.

Music is a subjective thing — I realize that. It's unfortunate that you don't like 'Coconut Cream' — but without providing reasons as to why, it's pretty easy to dismiss my reading. If there’s danger in the language, tigerthelion, I suggest no further use of the titanic terrarium.

Certainly you can do better than: "I can't be bothered to contribute in any real way to the reading, so I'll simply dismiss another reading out of hand by claiming that the it is trying to hard."

I might be guilty of overreaching — but at least I've tried. Same can't be said of you.

You’ll be serving the song when you find out the reason you refuse to change your opinion.

you should head on over to the straight up, honest to the bone “dog of the year thread” and the best part, no coconut cream references (until 4pm today that is – thanks Skip!)
