There. Procede...
- Gord Downie needs to release a noise record.

there's always one bad apple in the bunch

World container is not a masterpiece by any stretch. And the fact that the Hip speak of Bob Rock like he is someone to be worshiped is a little scary. World Container is another Gord Downie album that the Hip just happened to jump on board with. I am a long time Hip fan whom is still waiting for the Hip to team up again with Don Smith. Agree or disagree, Up To Here and Road Apples are considered classic hip and will never be touched by what Bob Rock does or doesnt do.
And one more thing that pissed me off last week (I was away in the states on business) and this is irrelevant to this post but who really gives a fuck. My problem is that the Hip didnt say one fucking thing on their site about Jeff Healey's death. Canadian music is supposed to be a community of people that promote and support one another. I think under the circumstances, the Hip could have at least penned a note of sympathy. But, I guess there is better things to do like promote a fuckin hockey rink, or worship Mr. Bob fuckin Rock so that the township of Bath can possibly be put on the map by his appearance. Stay home Bob. Maui needs you
ok, so i was wrong, lol, we don't all agree...
this thread is SPICY!
I'm all for personal opinion, but, dude, who pissed in your cornflakes? Do you seriously want a band who produces the same music for the duration of an 18 year career? Secondly, maybe the band felt they didn't know Healey close enough to comment. I'd rather have silence than bullshit.

So you're saying that every Canadian band should have a eulogy for Jeff Healey on their website?

I couldn't agree more. I love D4N but I don't want to hear it rereleased every 2 years. Every Hip album offers something new to the table. That's the best part.

Sorry I have to dissagree. Its a good album. strong at the start weak through the middle strong at the end IMO. Not a masterpiece

I think you meant to say "I've liked Up To Here and Road Apples for a long time". I don't see how a "long time" Hip fan can be submissive of everything they've done post Road Apples.
A noise album. By Gord Downie.

It's just so CHEESY sounding and Gord's lyrics, which usually took some time to understand the beauty of, really took a drastic dive on this record
It has a few good songs ( Rink, Kids, Family Band) but is far from a masterpiece. I understand The Hip needed someone like Bob Rock who was very focused to get them back on track making music, but I think they should step out of their comfort zone was again with this record and give us something new with a new producer.
THE HIP NEED RANDY JACKSON!!! :x :x :x :x :x
Honestly, to contribute, I'm torn when ti comes to WC. On one hand, I'll agree that it sounds way more polished than I like my Hip to be and it's not even close to being as good as any of their other albums (save the EP). It's not the direction I want to see them going in. On the other, though, it doesn't matter what I think of the direction they're going in. They can do whatever the fuc.k they want and I'm probably going to like it anyway. It's a really good album with a lot of solid songs. I think Bob Rock did a good job bringing the "fun" out of the band and, honestly, that's the main draw of the record; it's fun and playful and it's obvious that everyone involved is having a good time.
If it were up to me, I'd want a darker album with Steve Albini producing. Something really raw and minimal. Not acoustic but just much more... bare. Much more fuzzed-out and noisy. I mean, this has never been their style but I really dig what they did with songs like "It Can't Be Nashville Every Night", "Coconut Cream", and especially "No Threat". And entire album of songs like those three would be my ideal. Loud and with minimal production.
Either that or just something much more experimental. Their experimental phase peaked with M@W and has been quickly dissipating since. I miss the direction they were going with on TATH. It was a dark and very eloquent album that I think most of the hataz dislike because it was so... different from their previous and subsequent work. TATH, PP, and M@W had them trying out so many different sounds and song structures and that's really what I miss. I mean, I know they're capable of that and even more. Gord's solo stuff (especially BOtN) has him experimenting like he's never done with the Hip and it sounds amazing. The band starred in a pretty damn experimental documentary and The Right Whale, even though it's just a set of sketches, is PROOF of what they can do. Hell, an album of RW-ish tracks would be a dream come true for me.
