Because he's known for producing albums that either:
a) make bands more commercially successful, thus frustrating the true fans who listened to them when they were sincere
b) mark the point at which the band jumps the shark
c) are a prelude to the band breaking up.

f*ck.
It appears Bob has his fair share of haters.

I think he saved a band that was in danger of fading away if they had put out another half hearted album. The Hip and Bob obviously established a great working relationship. Two albums in a row will allow them to explore that relationship to its full potential.

I say right on! Go get em Bob, I got your back.

Except that it's not just in Canada he's disliked. And lots of Canadians become succesful in the States without becoming hated.

I ain't a-buyin' that one.
I liked WC and can't wait to hear what they have put together in round 2. The simple truth is no matter who was producing the next album people would love it or hate it. You can't please everyone. The Hip seem to like (actually love) Bob Rock and it sounds like they had a great time working with him. I don't see why they wouldn't do it again.

Isn't that all that really matters at this point? That they like who they're working with and enjoy the music that they're putting out. I'm just happy that I also enjoy it!!! Can't wait!
I'm all supportive of Bob Rock, given that he clearly has inspired the band. That's worth a lot in my mind.

I just hope he's grown ears in the last 2 years. WC is one of the worst-sounding albums I have in my ginormous collection. It's probably a pipe dream but I hope Bob brings back that grungy, raw, live-in-someone's-basement sound that made DFN sound so awesome.

Are You Ready
Coconut Cream
Butts Wigglin
All Canadian Surf Club

"In View" probably belongs on that list as well, but I enjoy it way too much. As for World Container, I agree it's no masterpiece, but it's a damn good record and a glorious burst of energy and creativity from a band that was spinning their wheels on their last two albums. Like many of you, I have issues with some of the production decisions made by Mr. Rock (particularly with the title track), but overall I think it's their most cohesive and focused album since Phantom Power. It's been well over a year and I still listen to it at least once a week. For me that's the mark of a good album. It holds up nicely.

Agree for the most part about WC, as in I listen to it at least once a week. But to me, and i'm in the minority, IBE is better, and second only to DFN in its greatness...but that's the beauty of The Hip..we all love them..every single one of us on this board...but we all have our own reasons for loving, and continue to find new reasons for our love. And for me, that's the sign of a GREAT band, and why this thread and countless others like it, could go on (and probably will) forever without an end.

I like IBE better than World Container. DFN is still #1 and I have a feeling it will always be #1 for me. Music is all subjective, though, and hearing all the differing views on what's good and what is not good is quite interesting to say the least.
I don't dislike Bob Rock. He's just not my favourite producer. The bands that he has produced for are bands that I have no interest in. Simple Plan, Motley Crew, Metallica........not my thing. WC has some stuff that I really like and some stuff that kind of bores me. I am not a huge fan of the glossy production that Rock usually brings.

BTW, if IBE was a half-hearted album, I hope to hear more half-hearted efforts from the boys in the future. Big Grin

I'll pick up the album regardless of the producer anyway. The Hip are still The Hip and they usually have good instincts; more often than not, anyway.

I hope Gord puts out another solo album sometime in the near future. I really dug CMG and BOTN and the looseness of the songs.
Methinks we'll get s taste of something new at belleville!!
Maybe the Hip will help Bob Rock produce a better album.

I wouldn't mind that at all. Big Grin 'No Threat' kicks my ass everytime I listen to it!!

I read an interview with Robby before the Kingston show where he mentioned that they were trying to get Bob to come out there and record them at the Bathouse. The majority of Bob Rock's production work has been done at his home studio in Maui or in Vancouver, so perhaps a change in studio and scenery will produce different results production-wise. The albums I've heard that were recorded at the Bathouse all have a very raw, live-off-the-floor sound to them, particuarly "Trouble at the Henhouse", the Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir's "High Cost of Low Living", Chris Brown & Kate Fenner's "O Witness", Blue Rodeo's "The Days in Between", and the Stripper's Union album. These records all had different producers, but they all feature a similar production style.

Regardless, the Hip are excellent songwriters and I have no doubt that the new album will kick ass, no matter who the producer is. 22 years into their career and this band has never let me down. They're just too damn good. I'm looking forward to hearing some new material on the summer tour!
