totally agree, they'd be my candidates for HNIC.
I say Detroit - Pittsburgh
Detroit wins cup.
booooooooo! :nooooo
I really like Chris Cuthbert & was really disappointed when CBC let him go a couple of years ago...but he was quickly snagged by TSN, so in the end it was pretty much a wash.
As for Jim Hughson, ughh, i wish he'd go to play-by-play for the Panthers or Thrashers or such.
skippy the wonder dog Wrote:j-monster Wrote:Perhaps I'm inadvertently proving your second point, but I can't agree that the interference penalty that led to the Flyers game winning PP goal was ridiculous. Begin hit that guy WAY late... you could have counted a good three Mississippi's before he decked him.
It was ridiculous in the context of what hadn't been called in that same game. Begin hit him late, but there was all kinds of shit going on that could have been called. Begin's hit didn't affect the play, didn't stop him going for the puck, etc. Meanwhile, the Flyers were doing all kinds of clutch and grab in the slot, which wasn't called.
The big problem with the officiating is that it is so frigging inconsistent. The refs let something go all through a game and then suddenly call it.
OK, you know what, I really can't argue with that. Another example was the San Jose-Dallas 4 OT game last night. Phenomenal game... but the two penalties called in overtime were absolutely "WTF?" type calls, based on the fact that a penalty hadn't been called since midway in the SECOND period... the players had gotten away with a lot in that game since that point, and THOSE were the penalties called in OT???
Point taken.

I also love the idea of professional hockey players mowing down on pizza in the OT intermissions.
One thing is for certain, Marty Turco has left behind his playoff choker baggage. While Nabokov had the save of the playoffs, Turco has outplayed the other goalie for three consecutive playoff series (counting last year's series against Vancouver). Should be interesting to see if he can maintain it against Detroit.
Absolutely agree, last night's game was one for the ages. Turco is very much on his game, and that alone should give Detroit some pause.
To me Cuthbert and Hughson are the two best play-by-play guys in the game, bar none.
I can very easily see, and hope we get, a Pittsburgh-Dallas Stanley Cup Final It would definitely be a great final series.
If it turns out to be Philly-Detroit, I will be severely bummed out. Go Pens and Stars!

I didn't think the first penalty was that bad of a call - it took away a scoring chance. The second penalty I thought was a little weak - a trip in the corner is not like a hook in front of the net - but as Bob McKenzie said, there was going to be an even-up call at some point. I think the Sharks - and Wilson - would have done more bitching about the call had they not all been so exhausted.

Paul Mara & Marek Malik are as good as gone. I think (and hope) Jaromir Jagr comes back for 2 or 3 more years with the Rangers...and i hope Straka comes back for at least another year, especially if Jagr resigns. I'm really not sure about Michael Rozsival & Sean Avery. Word is Rozsival will be looking for about $5 million per, and Avery in the $4+ range.
Anyone else watch MSG after the game? Some idiot female reporter got under Shanny's skin by mentioning talk about if he will be back or calling it quits, he really snapped at her. In same series of interviews Jagr again gave a great interview. I also hope he returns. He is a good guy and he took each and every retarded question about his future, yeah like he was gonna make a decision right then and there... And by the way, IMO, Jagr was the only 'big name' to show up in 4 of the 5 games against the Pens. and, I barely recall hearing Gomez' name during the games.
I guess its not surprising, but Paul Marice has been fired today

I thought they would at least bring in the new GM before they would fire him, let them make the decision.
This definitely doesn't help with the Fabian Brunnstrum situation..........it will be difficult trying to sell a team to him which has no GM and no coach..............not that I think this Burnnstrum is the "be all to end all" that everyone is making him out to be.

I just posted the same thing in the other NHL thread...I figured any mention of the Leafs has no place in a discussion about the playoffs :jump

best repost ever!!
Finally, the playoffs get back underway tonight! I really looking forward to the Stars/Wings series, it's the one i'm most interested in. I'm rooting for the Stars now that the Rangers are out.
I spoke to Brad Richards father this afternoon...i get a kick out of seeing his folks driving around in about a 1988 Ford 1/2 ton, considering their son is making $7.8 million a year

I'm pretty sure the Penguins are gonna win it all this year...I suspected as much all along really, the only team i thought would/could beat them would be the habs (laugh if you want, but i wasn't the only one thinking this, although that was under the assumption that the habs would be playing their best hockey  , made an ass out me for sure). I'm thinking Dallas vs. Pittsburgh, and it's not that i think Dallas can't win, i just have a gut feeling about the Pens.
Pittsburgh is definitely looking good, but I think their lack of experience might catch up with them in the final, especially if their opponent is Detroit.
I think Philly is going to school the Pens
...... and what is with the empty seats at the Joe?

Youth may pay off, and inexperience can be overcome by skill and talent. And as Jagr said,
"We kept thinking they[Pens]were gonna get tired legs, and they never got tired"
BTW some of The Wings could be their grandfathers...
