Fantastic thread ... loving it ...

how to pick? Right now I'm listening to Locked:

"it's a cool, sweet kinda place where the 'copters won't spot it. I destroyed the map; I even thought I forgot it" vs. "it's a cool, sweet kinda place where the 'copters won't spot it. I destroyed the map that I carefully dotted."

in The Heart of the Melt:

" 'it's not him that I'm trying to outswim,' she said, 'just you,' she said, 'just you' .... and there's the heart of the melt ..."

and the impassioned lunacy of:

"when I reel my Irish in, when I sleep in the rain, in straight lines through shadows, you're there."

so good.

CT
"shouting Philadelphia for Christ ... Christ for Philadel-phi-eye-ay"

love it.

I realize this hasn't been added to in a while, but it's the best thread on the site that I've read and we've missed a few! (I think; forgive me if any are repeats.) I realize my choices are lyrics-heavy, but here goes:

1) "I wrote unfriendly things, truly cruel, on the day that you were born, to show that words cannot touch beauty." This is tied with the last verse of Josephine for best hip lyric, IMHO.

2) The switch from ND into NOIS at the 93 Kumbaya Festival is my favourite jump back into New Orleans that I've heard.

3) Just then the captain assures us we will land
'I'll have you on the ground in 25 minutes or less."
'Or less,' did he say 'less'? Unless what?

I laugh every time I hear that.

4) "A promised hibernation high took me across the great black plate of ice" gives me chills . . .

5) All of Bobcaygeon is beautiful, of course, but the "sky was dull . . . falling one cloud at a time part" gets to me even more than what follows. (What can I say? I lived on the East Coast. Toronto's no reason to cheer.)

6) Turning Imagine on its ear during Grace, Too on Live Between Us.

7) The bridge in Everytime You Go.

8) The guitar solo in When The Weight Comes Down, starting with Gord screaming "Open wide!"

And 9,324 others to be recounted at a later date . . . .

Cheers,
John
"The phone rings and it brings Niagara Falls"...
"At 3 O'clock in the morning, you better be dying..."
Basically all of Beautiful Thing....
All of em. Seriously,

1) fantastic gap, common space ...IOD
2) when Gord sang "He said I'm tragically hip" that first time on Saturday Night Live and kind of smirked
3) pretty much the whole rave on "highway girl"
4) When the music kicks in on Blow for the first time. That was my first hip album back in 1993 and "Ka-boom".....

IBE: that "whoo" towards the end of Summer's
IVL: the transition in Dark Canuck
M@W: Phila-delphi-eye-ay

-if there's glory in miracles/it's that they're reversible
-"alright" in Fire in the Hole
FC: over there that's my room/and that's my sistahhhrs/and that's my sistahhhr

UTH: 40 things we shahre (Boots)
EP: "I shouth it dowwwwn" on Last American
On BOTN: Steeplechase. The whole damned, beautiful, painful, teary thing.
I couldn't even begin to list them all so I am going with the most recent one:

Makeshift - "we imagine us here and here we are" ...just the way Gordie sounds when he sings that - gets me everytime.
I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread.

The outro to Nautical!!

This is my favourite Hip song. That outro is why. Gets me every time.
akoso Wrote:Another one for me is in Yawning or Snarling when the pre-chorus kicks in when Gord sings "walk past damaged goods and ugly trends" (in the first verse) and then "take a look at this photograph". Both of those are great. I think Yawning or Snarling is one the Hips most underrated songs.

Great call... I've listened to that song several times over the last few days, and it might be my favourite Hip song at this point in time. I just love the slow funk of Gord S.'s bass line, the subtle guitar work from Rob and Paul, and how Gord fades his voice in and out on the last word of the line "they're just waiting for you to resurface". If I ever saw them play it live I might pass out just from sheer joy!

Some other moments for me (can't list them all, too many to mention don't ya know)... the outro of Put it Off, Rob's guitar solo in Bring it All Back, the lyrical genius of Throwing Off Glass and Titanic Terrarium (see my signature for evidence) and all of Fully Completely and It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken when done live.
"Showed no Patience, tolerance or restraint"
"full of countervailing woes" & "and let's get friendship right"
"this war isn't for children/war is nothing's enough"
"until we're talking in whispers again"

"grunt work somewhere between dream and duty/poking through with them shoots of beauty"

The Nth Degree Wrote:Inevitability of Death- the way they have that short break between "Fantastic gap..........common space" on the second verse

Good One. For me Greasy Jungle where Gord starts off "Greasy Jungle Metropolis Noir....Easy tangles the easiest so far...Ahhhh.......Ahhhhhh.....Ahhhhh......Ahhhhhh........and then it climaxes with the bass quickly picking up steam to "I drove down your road to Hazeldean where I tasted, your fuenral homes sandwiches and coffee."

Awesome! The bass line in that song is amazing.

Also in Nautical when Gord D. and Gord S. belt out those fingernails, scratching on the hull.

I totally agree that is f***ing awesome i get chills when i hear the intro of Greasy Jungle the best hip song in my opinion
The bridge in Lake Fever.

(With no offence to Paul, that needs a sultry female backup singer. Even with his big hair from 1987, he doesn't fit the bill. Smile )

The bridge in Bobcaygeon.

Take a look at this photograph ... Yawning & Snarling certainly is underrated.

And if we're allowing honorary mentions for BOTN material, 11th Fret, both choruses.
I FEEL SO PATRIOTIC, I COULD DANCE ALL NIGHT, JUST GIVE ME SOME LIGHT, GIVE ME SOME LIGHT AND I'LL DANCE ALL NIGHT absolutely amazing i still get goosebumps when i hear that
from the canada day prefromance at the amphitheatre this year at the start of grace too
