Agree with the statement too, but I will say that I was listening again to that Strombo Hip tribute this weekend, and it is impressive how well those cover songs spanned both the Hip and Downie solo catalogues. There were some misses, but there were some real gems in there on some of the deep cuts.

The Strombo show was the rare exception when people actually tried different songs. Some of my favorites from that show:

The Sadies- Long Time Running
Cowboy Junkies- Little Bones
Steven Page- Honey Please
Skydiggers- The Rock
Sarah Harmer- Thompson Girl
Jim Bryson- Scared

All great. The one I can't get out of my head is the lead singer of Hey Rosetta (blanking on his name) doing the medley of NFPA and Stay. Such an interesting choice putting those two songs together.

because they are 2 of the most popular songs the band has, they are easy to sing and easy to play. do you think people at a non-hip concert want to see someone belt out The Rules or Machine? nope.

Most of the CMG tunes would suit Paul's voice. Gord hangs back with his singing on that album making it a good fit for Paul's comparatively narrower range. The cover of Trick Rider is great stuff.

Thanks for posting Paul's cover. It's taken me awhile to appreciate the frailty and imperfection of his singing voice but now I love it. Can't wait for his next album.
