I shouldn't have called you a goof....... I'm Sorry.
Well Horrible I guess the rest of this board cannot be raised to the level of perfection you have achieved . Those lowly "migrants" breathe life into the hip , without them the Hip would be like most Canadian bands , short lived and out of the business, the US doesn't exactly embrace creative music . We saw what the level of reverance for music you have during the Super Bowl. Remember one thing you wouldn't know the Hip from a hole in the ground if it wasn't for these "migrants" . It's the air of arrogance and righteousness that makes me go Confusedcratch: , not that your "out of the loop"

You always say it so well Mark!

Also why shouldn't a band appreciate their fans?. I am not saying that the hip does not appreciate us, but horrible you seem to not expect anything from them at all! Why the hell not? You should, I mean really it is because of us that they are where they are. An update is really not much to ask for, or to expect. If a band does care about their fans they should realize that even if it is just a stupid update, it does make the fans happy to a certain extent. Your comment to about us being "migrants" is really not fair. I am a huge hip fan I have been for 10 yrs. I am certainly not a flag waver, and I certainly am not a fan who yells gets drunk and makes an ass of themselves. Also if you don't like the content of hipbase why bother coming here. We really don't need the insults!
I think it's irritating how, when a movie is being filmed, we can't stop hearing about it. Every moment on the set is broadcast - actors arguing, maybe someone gets injured, a scene runs overbudget. That is TOO much information. But the reason all these media outlets make this stuff so widely available is because people want it... knowing the story behind a work of art - where & when it was done, what was happening during its creation - leads to a greater appreciation of it. By the same token, knowing the background of an album and being updated during its creation can give you more insight into it. There are hundreds of bands who just come out of the woodwork every two years for a cash grab, and I would hate to see the Hip be thought of the same way.
Right on to the last 4 posts!! (well 5 actually)Couldn't have said it better myself...

and yeah, that Superbowl music... Confusedcratch: makes me feel shame for the US......what happened to good entertainment like U2?? UGH Confusedcratch:

Why not DMB?? Beanmedic would love that
i have said it before, but i will say it again.

the hip used to be about the fans. they used to do so much for us. they changed their taping policy for us. the created the hip club for us. they held contests where we could film backstage, sit in the front row, etc.

that is what they used to do.

now all we have is the taping policy. that is great for us, but because there are so few tapers in this community, tapes are still slow to come out. the hip club doesn't get updated any more, their website hasn't changed in months, and there were no contests on the last tour (correct me if i am wrong).

anyway, i am rambling. i just hope that the hip don't forget about their fans on the next tour. especially we East Coast fans.

i, for one, would love to see a cross Canada SUMMER tour. something they have never done.

hahahaha  as much as i cant stand DMB :nooooo , at least they play real instruments. when was the last time you saw justin timberlake pick up a guitar?
mark Wrote:i just hope that the hip don't forget about their fans on the next tour. especially we East Coast fans.

Cheers to that...all my loyalty to the band will go out the window if they ever pull another nationwide Vancouver-to-Montreal tour. They could have done 10 nights in a row at the Cohn here during the theatre tour and it would have sold out every night. They haven't played here since 2000 except for the disappointing Citadel Hill music "fest".
Confusedhock: holy cow - BIG thread, but I read it all.

Ok, um...bands make a conscious decision on how much they're going to do for their fans right? They're aware if their websites are updated regularly, if fan mail is being forwarded, if emails are being answered, if major parts of the country are left off the tour, umh, I dunno, if there are requests for private shows from their most devoted...

Cry

Not having enough time is not an excuse  most of that stuff's outsourced anyway (website, fanclub).

I 've heard the "they don't owe you anything" a thousand times, about a thousand bands...*yawn*
A band is nothing without its fans.
just my 2 fanatical cents
Hugh23 Wrote:Wow! I wish I wrote that statement.

You mean you wish you wrote a statement which reacts to the prevailing attitude of this thread, only to have the point entirely missed because of an ill-advised jab in its closing paragraph?

Regarding that jab: I’m not here to make sweeping generalizations, so I officially apologize for that poke at Hipbasers as a whole. The attitudes of the “migrants” I referred to are not rampant across this board, so it was wrong for me to overgeneralize; however, some of the attitudes do surface, which doesn’t exactly make those of us stateside feel incredibly welcome. The “migrants” are NOT the legions of rabid Hip fans themselves, nor Canadians or Canadian Hip fans as a whole. That tag is directed only towards those I encountered at years of Hip shows here in Ohio, and others in Pennsylvania, and even South Carolina where the spotty attendance was dominated by traveling sects of Canada-based followers. They seemed intent on ruining the experience for the natives, and likened themselves to frenzied preteens at an N’Sync concert, except were heavier, belligerent, and much more inebriated. They were inclined to “lay claim” to the band, and tried to designate a particular venue as Canadian territory for the duration of their visit. Once, at a show in Cleveland, “The Star Spangled Banner” was played before the band took stage, which the “migrants” drowned out by bellowing the lyrics to the Canadian anthem. This sort of tasteless disrespect and irreverence is what I was referring to, and the lack of appreciation and strange sense of entitlement that some of you show towards the creators of the art you supposedly love is, as Hugh put it, bewildering.

Yes, this is a “free country” as one of you so ironically stated in response to my post. I guess you have the right to an opinion as long as you are not critical of the way members this forum want to bite the hand that feeds them. Instead of getting defensive, calling me arrogant, and wrongfully accusing me of saying that the concept of this forum is “stupid”, try rereading my post, and if you disagree with its logic, construct a rebuttal which articulates why we, as fans, are justified in being “irritated, annoyed, angered and frustrated” that TTH doesn’t post a impersonal frickin holiday greeting on a website. Don’t counter with a slam on the US mass-culture of MTV-brainwashed cretins....that has nothing to do with me and my appreciation of true art. And “air of righteousness”? Excuse me, but if questioning the right of fellow fans to be discontent with the level of “information” an artist makes public concerning their progress on the works that we all inevitably consume and benefit from is “righteous” well, then gee....I guess I’m guilty as charged!

Dyersbay and Grooveless Tongue made valid responses.....Dyersbay - no, I do NOT expect anything of them. As I said, the value of the eight fabulous albums and riveting performances have made me richer. How can I expect them to give me anything more? That would be greedy. Selfish. Ungrateful. What have I given them? Money? The money I give them comes nowhere close to due compensation for what I’ve received from them. Time? The time spent on this bands art only brings me fulfilment! They don’t owe me more fulfilment, do they? The only obligation I feel this band, or any band, has to its fans is to be true to their own art. If they release a work to the public, it should be up to their established level of worth, and reflect the same level of craftsmanship that has preceded it. And still, I’m not gonna be too critical along these lines, because art will only be as good as its inspiration, and it cannot always be sublime.

Grooveless.....your post makes a lot of sense. But being privy to tidbits of information regarding a forthcoming artistic creation may be indeed be interesting or useful, but it is not necessary. And I simply don’t feel that it is required of the artist, and would never think that I, as the consumer, is entitled to that information. The beauty of art is the impression it has upon its audience, in and of itself. The reaction, whatever it may be, is the objective. Art of any value must be able stand alone.

I simply think owe TTH our gratitude. These guys have gotten older and more popular, and both of those elements are going to place greater demands on them as artists. Sit tight, and hold whatever they have given to you up to this point dear to your heart, and be thankful that they still are creating fantastic art for us all to enjoy.

The slam on US mass culture may not have to with your appreciation of art , but it has everything to do with your comments of "migrants" who follow the hip , you did make generalizing comments about Canadians (whom the Hip would have no career without because of the lack of interest in the States )and everyone on this board , so apologizing after the fact , and then being offended at the response doesn't make alot of sense . Maybe the point you were trying to make would have been heard but you chose to kick dirt in everyones faces , what response did you expect ? As far as calling you arrogant and righteous it had nothing to do with your opinions on fans wanting updates but everything to do with your statements about the forementioned Canadians and members of this board, we all have our opinions on different things, yours are no more legitimate than anyone elses, but attacking people will not bring an empathetic response. The Hip are known for their fans, fans that will spend their holidays and hard earned money to follow their favourite band across provinces and countries, asking for an update is no cardinal sin . How much effort does it take to update a site ? I've said more in this post than the Hip have in months(oct 31st to be precise), wer'e not asking them to give up their holidays from the gruelling life of a rock star , just a simple " The records coming along fine Blah blah blah " Peoples craving for new hip info comes out of passion, love and appreciation for the Hip's music not some sick greedy expectation of being owed. If anything I think the Hip would be thankfull for the interest and dedication of their loyal fans. The Hip have heard BS from critics ever since Day For Night , how the Hip have lost it , at least in this part of the country. Fans have stayed loyal out of love for the music, period , not because it sells beer or any other product . It bugs me that you would paint a country and this board as being the "crush a beer can on your head frat brothers" , simply because of an experience with rude Canadians and fans desires for a fix on more Hip info. Music is art , but it is also a commodity, the effort it takes to give a simple update I don't think is too much to ask for. The Hip are musicians who sell their music, merchandise etc..Not Gods. While we do " inevitably consume and benefit from " music , so do the Hip with a comfy lifestyle and the luxuries that come with it ( travel etc..) Requesting a simple update is not too much to ask in my opinion, nor is respect for fellow board members who share a love for the Hips Music .
I posted earlier in this thread that I wish I had written the statement that The Horrible Esthete had made. I agree with almost everything that was written, but somehow missed the slam that was made in the last sentence.

I do feel that The Hip don't owe us an update on what is happening with the new material. The only thing I need is another great CD. No, it wouldn't take much for them to tell us what is going on, but knowing that something new is coming is enough for me, but not enough for others.

Being a Hip fan in the U.S. is tough because there is little radio airplay of their music and most other rock fans don't know who they are because of it. When I saw my first Hip show back in 1995, I only knew two of their songs. But when I was there I was impressed by the band's live performance and the intensity of the fans who were really into the music. I imagine most of the crowd that night were locals, but I'm sure there was a good percentage of "migrants" present. I felt like I was on the outside of a fishbowl looking in on all the wonderful action. Everyone was dancing and singing. I wanted to be part of it, but I didn't know all the material.

Since then I have slowly become an intense fan like many of you. Many times the highlight of my summer would be when The Hip would play in Detroit. Eventually, seeing them once every two years was not enough. During the IVL tour I became a "migrant". I traveled through Ontario, the Midwest and the East Coast to see them more. I had so much fun I am going to do it again on the next tour.

I think "Horrible" made some good points in his first statement. But to label the fans who like to travel behind the band in a derogatory manner was unfair. For me, it was that group that drew me closer to The Hip. What was it about the band that made these people follow them? I know now and I'm enjoying the groove.

I understand why many of you are angry with "Horrible", but to make a retalitory statement that the general U.S. public approved of the X rated theme of the SuperBowl halftime show was unfair also. I don't recall being given an input as to what was shown. In both cases we shouldn't be making blanket statements.

In my last post I signed myself 'bewildered' because I don't understand why more Americans aren't Hip fans. Hopefully the new CD will change that.

First of all, no one here is going to get away with claiming they are a more passionate fan than I, and I don't claim to be any more passionate of a fan then any of you. So why is it that some of you all are ready to disavow your loyalty to the band over lack of information on upcoming projects or unsatisfacotry tour-stop choices, when I couldn't give half a rat's ass about some PR blurb slapped on some website, and have driven across the country to see them play? I'll sit patiently and wait for the new album like an adult. For the love of God, it hasn't even been two years since you got the last one!! Un-frickin-believeable.

And dude, it is an exaggeration of colossal proportions to say that I "painted a country and this board as being the 'crush a beer can on your head frat brothers', simply because of an experience with rude Canadians."
I apologized for my over generalization regarding this board, but I maintain that, *ahem* some of the irreverent attitudes and behavior I saw at twenty-plus Hip shows, spanning years of time, seem to be prevalent on this board, and I have the frickin text in this thread to prove it! How does that apply to the entire country of Canada? YOU made the inference that my impressions of tactless Hip-show audiences (who happened to be overzealous Canadians) was somehow directed at your country as a whole. I certainly don't think that the Canadian populace in general can possibly be as boorish as those I've witnessed with my own two eyes in attendance at Hip shows. If so, Cananda would be one hellish place to live. At best, you can only accuse me of thinking that all Canadian HIP FANS who ATTEND CONCERTS IN OHIO are of the 'frat boy' mentality, which I still won't claim.....those imbiciles just so happen to be the ones to disgrace their fellow countrymen by dominating the scene as they make royal asses of themselves.

The only reason you should be offended over THAT is if you were one of 'em.
I give up.........
i think this topic should be officially closed

Thank you all
Good-bye
