k... here's my idea:

Find a common multi-track recording program which a few interested people could buy/download. I play guitar so I could lay down a guitar track or two or three.

Since I don't own a drum set or a bass and my voice sounds like a mule being punched in the... anyways, I can't sing, I send the file to someone who plays drums or bass or sings. They add their track and bingo bango - We record some hip songs!!! Could be fun and intesting.

Let me know what you think or email me and maybe we can start pounding out some details.
For Mac users, the free GarageBand will do this, and more....
I'll throw my hat in on this as an instrumentalist, too. Name a song, i'll try to do some backing track for you.

It sounds like fun, but I think I've officially given up on this idea. I thought there would be more interest than there was. Ah well... better luck next time.

At least I have your avatar to get me through the hard times Confusedhock:

That's a shame - it's definitely a good idea. Just like The Postal Service! Big Grin 8)
I'll chip in with editing/mixing.

And I can play guitar... but not very well - electric or acoustic.

I'm sure with some creative editing I could sound like I know what I am doing.

Let's pick an easy song to start, and maybe this thing will gain momentum as the base tracks get shared.

That's the spirit, Chris!!!

Any suggestions on a program we could use? I've been looking for a good multi-track recording program for years but have yet to find anything decent.

It sounds like right now we have three guitarists, no bass, no drummer, no singer. This could be a little tricky. Maybe Fiddler's Green would be a good starter!!! I've never learned that open E tab that Steve Fissel posted a few years ago, but I've always wanted to.

I know there's already been a thread discussing this, but what would be the best (cheap/free) recording program available?
Use any program that will record to WAV or AIFF; I can multi-track mix either of those file types with ease...

For Mac users, GarageBand (if you have it - preinstalled for free on most new Macs) or Quicktime Pro ($30).

Audacity is free and available for Mac or PC and will record in a variety of formats.

I can set-up a simple upload page where users can upload their recordings; I'll download them and mix 'em.

To make my life easier, let's all pick a tempo (preferably the correct one) and play to a click track/metronome... Smile
If I can get hold of a decent mike I'd be up for vocalising on some tracks... and in fact I'm looking to get a mike anyway, for a project with a buddy of mine :thumb:
if you only want to do recording on a computer with a mic, I'd reccomend the Samson USB condenser mic. It's very simple to use, and it makes a nice clean signal that does a good job for demoing vocals on a computer.
I can provide handclaps, and would be more than willing to supply banana shaking :-)

D
I also play a mean triangle.
OK... let's pick two songs; one rocker, and one "balled"

My choices: Fiddler's Green and Family Band as performed by The Hip Fan Band.
I play drums and more, by the time you guys get the guitar tracks done I might have some time to do the drums
I play guitar and took singing lessons...but I SUCK. So I could do some guitar work and BACKING vox Smile

I use Cool Edit pro 2.0 and Firebox for my soundcard

So you/we would play to a click first and then player? Ihave a drum machine for basic basic beat

I'll do Membership to a click if anybody wants to try that
