there really are no set lyrics to this song because its not on an album yet but i still love it...my fav version is 12.17.03 Dave Matthews And Friends at Madison Square Garden, NYC - Sweet Up And Down

Big dog bites the bone
Life's too short to take all this
Not true when what's more:
Life's too short to mind
Just keep on with
The Sweet Up and Down

Unturning her cheek
Inside-out, her neat little pose
Dirty, little girl
Climbs out of the hole in her own
In this Sweet up and Down

I believe in love
But believe it's my heart that keeps turning me down
I believe in love
I think it's just fine
Oh, the Sweet up and Down

Big pig turns to me
Pig he needs to eat like us all
Not far from the beast
Man sits down to feast on this part
Of the Sweet up and down

I believe in love
And believe it's my heart that keeps turning me down
I believe in love
I think it's just fine
On the Sweet up and Down
BT...

Up and down, inside out
Outside in some you lose some
You win for us all
Up and down we go
Bad times choke us all once or twice
On this Sweet up and Down

I believe in love
But think nothing about it when you're not around
I believe in love
I think you're just fine
On the Sweet up and Down

I believe in love
But believe in my heart that keeps turning me down
I believe in love
I think you're just fine
On the Sweet up and Down
It's OK
by Delirious

Take me or leave me, don't have to believe me.
All the words I have to say, all the songs that fly away.
Take me or leave me, believe me good will come.

It's okay, you know I'll live to fight another day.
It's okay, you know I'll live to find another way.

She's as pretty as hell, and her eyes have no home.
The beauty has run from your face.
Such beauty that hung from your face.
And if you would drink this wine, you'll shine.

It's okay, you know I'll live to fight another day.
It's okay, you know I'll live to find the words to say.
It's okay, you know I'll live to find another way.

And if you would give me holy wine, I'll shine.

It's okay, you know I'll live to fight another day.
It's okay, you know I'll live to find the words to say.
It's okay, you know I'll live to find another way.

Will you come to me like a summer's day?
I will sing again.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers

I'm coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his—chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go

I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his—chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, let me go

I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside

I never...
I never...
I never...
I never...
Well not the entire lyrics, but a lesser known song by Pink Floyd, The Gunners Dream off of The Final Cut Album

Its a song about a WWII veteran, with his wife and he is reminiscing about his days in the war while at a Cenetaph during Rememberance day

"Goodby Max, Goodbye Marv, after the service as we're walking slowly to the car, and the silver in her hais shines in the clold november air, you hear the tolling bells and touvh the silk on youe lapel, and as the teardrops rise to meet the comfort of the band, you take her frail hand, and hold on to the dream................"

every time I hear this I get goosebumps.............Roger Waters is friggin amazing at telling a story. So may people think of Pink Floyd as a druggie band, they are so much more than that............
It wouldnt be right if I didnt post the lyrics to my favorite song ever:

LA Woman-The Doors

Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
Where the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows
Are you a lucky little lady in The City of Light
Or just another lost angel...City of Night
City of Night, City of Night, City of Night, woo, c'mon
L.A. Woman, L.A. Woman
L.A. Woman Sunday afternoon X3
Drive through your suburbs
Into your blues, into your blues, yeah
Into your blue-blue Blues
Into your blues, ohh, yeah
I see your hair is burnin'
Hills are filled with fire
If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar
Drivin' down your freeways
Midnight alleys roam
Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman...
So alone, so alone X2
Motel Money Murder Madness
Let's change the mood from glad to sadness
Mr. Mojo Risin', Mr. Mojo Risin' X2
Got to keep on risin'
Mr. Mojo Risin', Mr. Mojo Risin'
Mojo Risin', gotta Mojo Risin'
Mr. Mojo Risin', gotta keep on risin'
Risin', risin'
Gone risin', risin'
I'm gone risin', risin'
I gotta risin', risin'
Well, risin', risin'
I gotta, wooo, yeah, risin'
Woah, ohh yeah

Good call on The Gunner's Dream. Excellent song, excellent album. As far as I'm concerned, there was no Pink Floyd after Roger Waters. Full lyrics:

Floating down, through the clouds
memories come rushing up to meet me now
and in the space between the heavens
and the corner of some foreign field*
I had a dream.
I had a dream.

Goodbye Max, goodbye ma.
After the service, when you're walking slowly to the car
and the silver in her hair
shines in the cold November air
you hear the tolling bell,
and touch the silk in your lapel
and as the teardrops rise to meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream.

A place to stay, enough to eat,
somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street,
where you can talk out loud about your hopes and fears,
and what's more, no one ever disappears
you never hear their standard issue kicking down your door.
You can relax, on both sides of the tracks
and maniacs don't blow holes
in bandsmen by remote control
and everyone has recourse to the law
and no one kills the children anymore.
No one kills the children anymore.

Night after night, going round and round my brain
his dream is driving me insane.

In the corner of some foreign field, the gunner sleeps tonight.
What's done is done. We cannot just write off his final scene,
take heed of the dream.
Take heed.

------

* see Rupert Brooke, "The Soldier":

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. Etc, etc.
Quote:Good call on The Gunner's Dream. Excellent song, excellent album. As far as I'm concerned, there was no Pink Floyd after Roger Waters.

Very true, but if you look at the Division Bell as a David Gilmour solo project, not a Pink Floyd album, it is fantastic! Some really great songs, and you can really tell that a lot of the songs were written towards Roger Waters, just like Wish You Were Here was about Sid Barret. The opening song Cluster One really sets the sage for the entire album, a real flashback to the old Pink Floys sound, but yet not Pink Floyd................ Sad

I still think that there is the possibility of a reunion, hopefully................
Eric Anderson - Thirsty Boots

You've long been on the open road,
You've been sleeping in the rain,
From dirty words and muddy cells
Your clothes are smeared and stained,
But the dirty words and muddy cells
Will soon be hid in shame
So only stop to rest yourself
Till you are off again

Chorus:

So take off your thirsty boots
and stay for a while,
Your feet are hot and weary,
from a dusty mile,
And maybe I can make you laugh,
maybe I can try,
I'm just looking for the evening,
the morning in your eye.

So tell me of the ones you saw
As far as you could see
Across the plain from field to town
A-marching to be free
And of the rusted prison gates
That tumbled by degree
Like laughing children, one by one,
They look like you and me

Chorus.

I know you are no stranger down
The crooked rainbow trails
From dancing cliff-edged shattered sills
Of slandered, shackled jails
For the voices drift up from below
As the walls they're being scaled
Yes, all of this, and more, my friend,
Your song shall not be failed.

Chorus.

Yes, you've long been on the open road
You've been sleeping in the rain
From dirty words and muddy cells
Your clothes are smeared and stained
But the dirty words, the muddy cells,
They'll soon be judged insane
So only stop to rest yourself
'til you are off again.

Chorus.
The song i posted is kinda my song of the week but my favorite songs right now is by Phil Ochs it's called Outside of a Small Circle of Friends, and What are you Fighting For? here are the lyrics to both. I don't know if any of you know who he is but he was Dylans folk comtenporary and an amazing singer.

What are you Fighting For?

Oh you tell me that there's danger to the land you call your own
And you watch them build the war machine right beside your home
And you tell me that you're ready to go marchin' to the war
I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

Before you pack your rifle and sail across the sea
Just think upon the Southern part of the land that you call free
Oh, there's many kinds of slavery and we've found many more
I know you're set for fightin', but what are you fighting for?

And before you walk out on your job in answer to the call
Just think about the millions who have no job at all
And the men who wait for handouts with their eyes upon the floor
Oh I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

Turn on your TV, turn it on so loud
And watch the fool a smiling there and tell me that you're proud
And listen to your radio, the noise it starts to pour
Oh I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

Read your morning papers, read every single line
And tell me if you can believe that simple world you find
Read every slanted word till your eyes are getting sore,
I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

And listen to your leaders, the ones who won the race
As they stand right there before you and lie into your face
If you ever try to buy them, you know what they stand for
I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

Put ragged clothes upon your back and sleep upon the ground,
And tell police about your rights as they drag you down,
And ask them as they lead you to some deserted door,
Yes, I know you're set for fightin', but what are you fightin' for?

But the hardest thing I'll ask you, if you will only try
Is take your children by their hands and look into their eyes
And there you'll see the answer you should have seen before
If you'll win the wars at home, there'll be no fighting anymore

Standing outside A Small Circle of Friends

Look outside the window, there's a woman being grabbed
They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed
Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain
But Monopoly is so much fun, I'd hate to blow the game
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends.

Riding down the highway, yes, my back is getting stiff
Thirteen cars are piled up, they're hanging on a cliff.
Maybe we should pull them back with our towing chain
But we gotta move and we might get sued and it looks like it's gonna rain
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends.

Sweating in the ghetto with the (colored/Panthers) and the poor
The rats have joined the babies who are sleeping on the floor
Now wouldn't it be a riot if they really blew their tops?
But they got too much already and besides we got the cops
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends.

Oh there's a dirty paper using sex to make a sale
The Supreme Court was so upset, they sent him off to jail.
Maybe we should help the fiend and take away his fine.
But we're busy reading Playboy and the Sunday New York Times
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Smoking marihuana is more fun than drinking beer,
But a friend of ours was captured and they gave him thirty years
Maybe we should raise our voices, ask somebody why
But demonstrations are a drag, besides we're much too high
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Oh look outside the window, there's a woman being grabbed
They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed
Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain
But Monopoly is so much fun, I'd hate to blow the game
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

[ Additional verse, 1974 ]
Down in Santiago where they took away our mines
We cut off all their money so they robbed the storehouse blind
Now maybe we should ask some questions, maybe shed a tear
But I bet you a copper penny, it cannot happen here
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Both songs are amazing, I think the first one still rings true today
A Folk Ballad by a Canadian Legend:

Sit Down Young Stranger
by Gordon Lightfoot, 1970

I'm standing at the doorway, my head bowed in my hands
Not knowing where to sit, not knowing where to stand.
My father looms above me for him there is no rest.
My mother's arms enfold me and hold me to her breast.

They say “You been out wandering”, they say “you traveled far,”
“Sit down young stranger and tell us who you are.”
The room has all gone misty, my thoughts are all in spin
“Sit down young stranger and tell us where you been.”

“Well I've been up to the mountain, I've walked down by the sea.
I never questioned no one and no one questioned me.
My love was given freely and oftimes was returned.
I never came to borrow, I only came to learn.”

“Sometimes it would get lonely but it taught me how to cry.
And laughter came too easy for life to pass me by.
I never had a dollar that I didn't earn with pride,
'Cause I had a million daydreams to keep me satisfied.”

“And will you gather daydreams or will you gather wealth?
How can you find your fortune when you cannot find yourself?”
My mother's eyes grow misty, there's a trembling in her hand
“Sit down, young stranger, I do not understand.”

“Now will you try and tell us you ‘been too long at school’?
That ‘knowledge is not needed’, that ‘power does not rule’?
That ‘war is not the answer’, that ‘young men should not die’?
Sit down young stranger, I wait for your reply.”

“The answer is not easy, for souls are not reborn
To wear the crown of peace, you must wear the crown of thorns.
If Jesus had a reason, I'm sure he would not tell
We treated him so badly, how could he wish us well?”

The parlor now is empty, there's nothing left to say
My father has departed, my mother's gone to pray.
There's rockets in the meadows, and ships out on the sea.
The answer's in the forest, carved upon a tree -

“John loves Mary”....does anyone love me?
Nelly Furtado - Try

All I know
Is everything is not as it's sold
but the more I grow the less I know
And I have lived so many lives
Though I'm not old
And the more I see, the less I grow
The fewer the seeds the more I sow

Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Try... Try

I wish I hadn't seen all of the realness
And all the real people, are really not real at all
The more I learn, the more I learn
The more I cry the more I cry
As I say goodbye to the way of life
I thought I had designed for me

Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
I'm all I'll ever be
But all I can do is try ohh try
Try... Try... Try... Try

All of the moments that already passed
(already passed)
We'll try to go back and make them last
(make them last)
All of the things we want each other to be
(each other to be)
We never will be, we never will be
And that's wonderful, that's life
That's you baby
This is me baby
We are, we are, we are, we are, we are, we are
Free
In our love
We are free in our love

try
YOU WERE RIGHT
by Built to Spill

You were wrong when you said
Everything's gonna be alright
You were right when you said
All that glitters isn't gold
You were right when you said
All we are is dust in the wind
You were right when you said
We are all just bricks in the wall
And when you said manic depression's a frustrating mess
You were right when you said
You can't always get what you want
You were right when you said
It's a hard rain's gonna fall
You were right when you said
We're still running against the wind
And life goes on after the thrill of living is gone
You were right when you said
This is the end

That is one of my top 20 favorite songs ever! I'm actually writing a paper that draws from it, "Intertextuality in Popular Music". Nice pick!! :thumb:

let me know when your paper is done, i'd like to read. what's it for??? i'm actually writing a thesis that draws heavily on the notion of "intertextuality", and that was kinda the motivation for picking the song. musically, it's not nearly a BTS favorite for me (there's so many), but I thought it would look good lyrically when posted on this board.

wasn't expecting to be called out on the cultural studies terminology, but hey, nice work!

Only ones I can think of and remember all the lyrics to at the moment.
First is one sung by Philip Quast (Australian actor, does a lot of theatre and musicals).
It's from his Album Live at the Donmar

I WAS HERE (Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty)

I’ve gone without bread. I’ve slept in the mud
I’ve given my best while they’ve screamed for my blood
I’ve begged and I’ve bullied for any small chance to perform
At nights I’ve awakened, my guts in a knot
Remembering how much I gave up and for what?
Some paints and some costumes – a pitiful tent in a storm
A handful of coins, a trunk always packed
No family, no home, just this madness to act
Still I have a theory about this disease we contract
That most men are equally crazy as actors in fact

Why does a boy carve his name on a tree?
Or the firstborn inherit the throne?
What is a sculptor aspiring to be
When he spends half his life carving stone?
Kings build their tombs for the ages.
Poets and fools fill up their pages
What are we hoping for? What do we fear?
I say we yearn to leave something that lasts
To be known for what little we’ve done
Men tell their children the tales of their pasts
And each man gives his name to his son
Something in song or in story.
Something in blood, something of glory
Something that won’t fade away in a year
Well, I will not flicker and die like an ember.
Too many men flicker and die
I will leave something behind to remember.
Somehow I must. Don’t ask me why?

I have no wealth, at least none I can claim
And no patience for carving in stone
All that I have are my skill and my name
And this chance to make both of them known
This is my key to the portal.
How I can leave something immortal
Something that time cannot make disappear
Something to say
I was here!

Seems to capture what most people strive towards.

Second is from a little-known musical called The Last Session, written by Steve Schalchlin about a guy with Aids - it's really good, and this song opens the show:

SAVE ME A SEAT

Perhaps some day for several hours
You'll fill some church with lots of flowers
And display some saintly shot of me
Somewhere in the hall
And stick a tray of Nachos
up against the wall.
I bet my mom will tell a story
Endowing me with lots of glory
And punish you by making you listen to my song
Or torture you by forcing you to have to sing along
Somebody save me a seat
Somewhere in the back
Cause I'll get bored and go across the street
And eat a snack and grab a beer
At the bar
Find a piano
Get out the tip jar
Somebody save me a seat
at that piano across the street
I'll look back and laugh at you
cuz you'll be bored as hell
And will you wonder if you ever knew me
Will you wonder if you knew me too well?
I'll sing all the secrets I'm too ashamed to share
I"ll sing about courage that came from God knows where
A revue of all the hearts I've broken
All the songs I've sung
Foolish words I might have spoken
When I was very young
Somebody save me a seat
On a roller coaster somewhere
We'll fly around and we'll have some fun
And we'll think about the miracles we could have done
and the people we could have become
Well, the beer's made me silly
And I feel kinda guilty
cuz I left you alone over there
So I'll slip back inside and stand by your chair
And just for a moment I'll goof with your hair
Then I'll find my way back to the seat in the back
And I'll be a good boy til it's over
Then I'll get to do something that you cannot do
I'll follow you home everyone of you
Then on a day when you feel lost or hurt
Go to the kitchen and get some dessert
Then sit at the table and eat
Just remember to save me a seat
Please remember to save me a seat
