What's the criteria for this poll?

Cherry and Gretzky bringing in votes ahead of Banting? That is brutal. One guy is good with a puck, one guy yells loudly and makes fun of europeans, and one discovered and isolated insulin, saving the lives of millions around the world....

Whatever you want. Who do you think is the best overall, of all time.
CBC's criteria was open nomination, the top ten vote getters then got a spot in the final round. The votting wasn't flawless however, as a pro wrestler, a Winnipeg radio host, and a club leader all made the list because of block voting.
The CBC's top vote getters in the original balloting were, in order: Trudeau, Fox, Pearson... I'm hoping Terry can move past Lester B. in the end.

For the record, Pearson gets my vote. My 2nd choice would be Terry Fox.
I'm surprised Pearson hasn't gotten many votes on here.

For those interested, Macleans published a special issue to coincide with the CBC's TV show called: "Leaders and Dreamers: Canada's Greatest Innovators and how they changed the world."
Their panel of editors and famous people chose the tops in categories. Here's their list of top 3 "Canadian Heroes" all from the medical field.
Sir William Osler- created practical learning and holistic medicine. First teacher to take students into an operating theatre, and consider the mind as a vital organ.
Wilder Penfield- Moved to Montreal from the States. He discovered a disease called "epilepsy" and pioneered it's treatment. He also mapped the brain... you probably remember that "I smell toast" heritage minute.
Norman Bethune- He made CBC's list too. Devoted his life to humanitarian life-saving surgeries during the Spanish Civil War and Mao's revolution. He is a like a diety in China, one of his books is required reading.
Featured prodominately on the cover:
Terry Fox
Margaret Atwood
Jacques Plante
Pierre Elliot Trudeau
Marshall McCluhan
The Avro Arrow
The Zipper
Frederik Banting
Glenn Gould
The Canada Arm
Katrina Le May Doan
The Blue Box
And the usual "you know who's" of the comedy and country music feilds.
At least Avril and Don Cherry weren't on this list.

I think of Trudeau as the father of our national debt. And in general, I think politics and politicians are overrated. I think athletes are athletes - nothing more, nothing less. So my vote went for Terry Fox.
I do take issue with Bell being on this list. Ummm, shouldn't one criteria for Greatest Canadian be that he/she has to be Canadian?

I read where the National Post had a poll a few years back asking who 'Canada's Greatest Hero' was. Terry Fox won that. Anybody know who else finished highly in that poll? I'm guessing the usual suspects..

Immigrants aren't Canadian?
Of course those not born here should be considered among the Greatest Canadians. It's the whole point of this country.
They had a choice, they chose Canada. Most of us just got lucky.

He chose Canada? Ummm, his parents chose Canada. He chose Boston.
But nice try.

Ah, but you couldn't refute the point... as usual.
Immigrants are Canadian, and Bell belongs on that list, as does John A. Macdonald.
And I was refering to immigant Canadians in general, but because you like to bicker: Before Boston, Bell chose Brantford... he had grant offers in three different States, and could have been anywhere when he made that call.
Nice try.

What point Dame? Your assumption that I don't consider immigrants to be Canadians? Why would I even validate an idiotic and demeaning comment like that. And for the record, my grandfather on my father's side of the family was first generation immigrant, and I considered him to be just as Canadian as I am. In my mind, he became Canadian the second he got his Canadian citizenship.
I made the point that I don't consider Bell to be Canadian because he was born in Scotland and moved to the US where he did the bulk of his work. If you don't agree with my opinion, fine. But trying to make it sound like I'm anti-immigrant is low - even for you.

Hey, this looks familiar. Dame tried to paint me as a racist just because I said that:
"I think there will be a groundswell for Kerry when democrats re-ignite the less-educated, more gullible faction of their constituency with reminders of how Bush supposedly 'stole' the 2000 election"
How ironic that he affixed the 'racist' brand to that statement, since there is no mention of any particular race, sex, age, creed, etc. there! Since he did just that, what does it say about him when 'racism' is the first thing that comes to mind when he hears people referred to as being "less-educated" or "gullible"?
