Can we just call it down the middle and say that it may not be the last time they play live, but there's a snowball's chance in hell there's ever another actual tour?

There's nothing to call, the band never said they would never play a show ever again after Kingston, for that reason I never say never. A snowballs chance in hell, you bet, totally agree.

But I'm not about to quote medical journals and keep reminding everyone that he's dying to get my point across.

so split that however the fuck you want to.

Anybody else want to chime in?
I have to say after being there last night, it sure felt like a goodbye tour, even if was never said. Obviously, no one knows for sure, but it seemed pretty obvious to me that they are doing this for the hardcore, loyal fans that have been with them through the decades, as one last chance to hear their favourite songs. I have to say I was quite surprised at the material they pulled out; it certainly wasn't geared towards the more casual fan.

duly noted herr lizard Smile
You know, it's been over 7 years since I last posted here, and closer to 8 going on 9 since I was a regular. I've never stopped being a Hip fan though, not at all.

Obviously, hearing the news was devastating. My stomach dropped when I read the full announcement on their website. How could this be?

Pretty much everything possible has been said, and by people much more eloquent than I. But I'd just also like to state how much The Hip has meant to me, ever since as a teenager I went to buy Up To Here at a Sunrise record shop and feeling relief the person at the cash register let me buy it even though I was a whole 3 cents short (oh how naive I was back then). They've been a part of my life, in good times and bad, and I'm thrilled to have tickets to see them twice during this tour (both in London and the second show in Toronto). They are my favourite band and will be for as long as I live.
hurls15 Wrote:My first listen/remembrance of them was as a 14 year old back in 1990. For those of us around that age at that time, one of the things to do was to tune into your favourite FM radio stations and record songs onto a blank cassette tape in order to make a mix of good music. I can remember hearing and recording Blow at High Dough from Q107 and thinking wow, what is this?!
Ha! You just reminded me of something. Back in the old days when CFNY (the Edge for you younger folk) used to have the all request nooner I managed to get on introducing Little Bones. "Hi, this is Sarah, from Ajax, and this is Little Bones by The Tragically Hip on the all request nooner on CFNY 102.1". This must have been in the early 90's, and I may still have it on a tape somewhere in storage.

I played the heck out of Another Midnight on my mix tape.....it still always reminds me of trips to Muskoka.

Anyway, how do you describe the soundtrack to your life? The Hip have been with me since high school, where I even managed to include them in an English class project, analyzing the lyrics to Wheat Kings and playing footage from Heksenketel on the old TV and VCR you used to have to wheel down to class from the AV room.

I still haven't really processed all of this. Maybe I'm trying to push it off and not face reality. I haven't watched any videos yet, but I think I probably should, otherwise I may be a huge mess come Kingston. I don't know how to convey my thanks for all the incredible memories. Road trips, overseas trips, short subways trips. All have been to memorable shows. The music has always been there. Thankfully, the music will always be there. We'll always have tapes, cd's, mp3s and mp4s. So I guess, even though I'm saying goodbye to live shows, I'm not saying goodbye to the music totally. For that I'm grateful.

Still not real.

Agreed...
Hard to believe it's been exactly a year since the announcement. I obviously can't speak to the personal side of things for Gord, but I would like to think that professionally it's been a very rewarding year for him and that it has probably gone as well as he could have expected.
I remember my wife telling me to check the CBC website first thing in the morning when I woke up; she didn't want to say what the news was. I had the email from the band waiting for me as well. I was in shock all morning. What a long and adventurous and terrible and wonderful year it has been to be a fan and admirer of Gord and the Hip. And this place was such an important touchstone and refuge. And here's to what comes next. Whatever it is. Thanks to all.

I echo these comments fully, and completely, right down to remembering getting out of the shower that morning and having my wife tell me that something has happened and that I needed to check my email. She didn't want to tell me either.

What a year.
I'll never forgot that awful day where I got the news about Gord. Nor forget how I couldn't even verbalize to my wife what was wrong. All I could do was hand her the phone.

That said, last year gave us some brilliance in the Man Machine Poem album. And some words-do-not-suffice live magic on the accompanying tour. I am so happy I could be at the third Toronto show. I would have been haunted forever if I didn't catch them once last year. What a night. What a celebration.

The Kingston show was mind-blowing. It seems like despite the terrible circumstances, the band finally started to get its due from the press and the mainstream, especially in the US. They were no longer ignored. They were something special if all of Canada stopped for them. So at least their profile has been heightened. It's well deserved.

Gord also put out his brilliant Secret Path record and did three solo shows. He's been all over the place. Still going strong. I hope things keep going on as they are now. Steady as she goes.
Just posted on their Facebook page.

"CBC will rebroadcast the Aug 20th Man Machine Poem concert from Kingston, in its entirety, on June 24, 2017 at 8pm. More details to follow."

Seems like odd timing, I mean so close to a year, why not rebroadcast right on the one year anniversary of the show?? Makes me wonder if something else might be in the works, like announcing the documentary, or maybe "Man Machine Poem #2" CD release??

Spidey sense tells me something else is up, but could be wrong.
Gord and the band have been on my mind front and centre since the news of Chris Cornell. It's been a remarkable year of accomplishments for Mr Downie, could we have expected anything less?
I barely ate for a week after I heard the news, between sadness and the anxiety around getting tickets.

Can't believe it's been a year. What a ride it's been. I woke up at 7:30 for work like I usually do, and went to Facebook as usual.. it was at the top of my news feed and my heart sunk. From the scalping debacle to the Kingston broadcast news to watching Periscopes of each show as they reached Ontario. The band finally getting to Ontario where I went hog wild (no regrets). Being in Kingston 48 hours before the show and feeling the aura.. to the show itself. It's still so fresh.

Maybe I'll watch the telecast, finally. Think any viewing parties will pop up?
