Seeing those tour dates pop up was very bittersweet, knowing it's likely the last. Same with the new album. Right now I just can't believe it might be their last one.

I was just about to post a new topic on this question -- i.e. is this actually confirmed as the "last" tour? Then I thought maybe it would be seen as insensitive to ask that, so I deleted my post. I re-read the Hip's announcement and it doesn't actually say it is the last tour or a farewell tour. I realize that is all likely and that there could be no guarantees at this point, but am I right that the band itself (or their management) has not said this is the "last" one?

They didn't officially say it was the last. But I don't think it would be insensitive to assume that it might be. Over the last 24 hours, everybody on this forum has been talking about saying goodbye, etc..

It feels like a lot of people--not on here, but in the media and on social media especially--are eager to write Gord's eulogy. It's disgusting. But what we don't know, and I don't imagine the band does either, is what happens after Kingston. I'm guessing the tour's ending in Kingston in case this is the end, and that way they can go out with an epic hometown blowout. After that, it'll be up to the band in general and Gord in particular to see what happens next. But the tour was announced to support MMP. It wasn't billed as a farewell tour or a f*ck cancer tour or whatever. Heck, even the announcement yesterday said they'd be doing "another" tour, not "one more" tour.

Or maybe they do know it's the end and just don't want to make an official announcement, which is obviously their prerogative.
^ that's what I meant. I just couldn't write the fog out of myself. Thank you,

I thought it was clear that nobody knows yet.
Lets keep up hope...another tour and another new album in a year followed by another tour...that will keep him going!
I think the reason this hit me is that The Hip have been a constant in my life for, now, 23 years - whether I didn't listen to them for a short while or had the latest album on repeat, they have always been a constant - something I know I can always go back to and enjoy, drop a couple of tracks on, listen or watch some live shows and they're there, making new music, touring, and I suppose when something becomes that, it never really occurs to you that constants too can end. When it becomes a possibility its hard to know what to do - so my thoughts are with all the other Hip fans.

I'd hoped they'd do the Fully Completely tour in London (UK) as that was the album that got me into them and is my favourite for both its studio and live versions. I kinda figured maybe they'd come back over here and Id get to feel the same feeling of euphoria I did when I saw them again in '09 in London. Looking at flights, costs, tickets etc I doubt I can afford the £1000 or so it would take to get to Vancouver for a 4 day round trip. Such a shame as the atmosphere would be beyond words.

One thing I've always loved about the hip is their attitude to live recordings and I take comfort in the fact there's such a good community (such as this one) that have archived so many of their shows, so whatever happens and I hope Gord beats this as much as the next guy, we will always have those live moments to relive over and over what the Hip have given us, which is excellent musicianship, lyrics with an intelligence and insight that is sorely lacking nowadays and most of all, Gord Downie, the best damn front man to have ever picked up a mic (and of course rode his mic stand like a horse!)

One would assume--but then go to Twitter and do a search for "last hip tour" and, well, it's apparently not.
basically have thought of nothing else since getting this news in bed yesterday morning.

im just very sad.

My thought as well, even his doctor at the press conference was non committal about his long term prognosis. Everything from here on out depends on only one thing: what Gord is able/wants to do.
I wish the outlook was brighter.... can't give up hope

So you won't have to rise and fall alone
Or endure the wonder of survival
The wipe out loss
The elation of free fall

HELLO?

I've always heard those last images as euphemisms or analogies for death, and the friends' request that the subject of the song not go through it alone but with his friends at his side. Seemed fitting to me.

A good prognosis for this kind of tumour is 12 to 15 months. My grandfather had the same kind. He had surgery and radiation therapy and he lived for a little under a year.
Message from Leslie Feist on Facebook, and a solo cover of Flamenco:

"For Gord. We’ll all be there this summer to see you bring out the new songs with your singular guts and panache.... and the golden oldies that are so golden.
All my respect, admiration and love, Leslie. ‪#‎gorddownie‬ ‪#‎thetragicallyhip‬"
