Would it of been so hard to explain yourself the first time? Either way ive been busy as hell today, but i did some looking and wasnt able to find anything to refute those claims at that time. I was aware of the date of the article, but to my knowledge the laws hadn't changed.
I was just trying to clarify whats legal and not legal in Canada for my own curiosity, seems there's alot of confusion around the subject, and I have never been one for "stealing" music, 99% of my music is bought and paid for.
I steal music all of the time. Since I've started downloading albums I've discovered great bands that I otherwise would not have much, much, much more easily than I ever would have without having done so. I go back and buy physical copies of the best stuff that I hear over the year to have an actual collection since I'm still a sucker for that even if I rarely get to listen to them. I go to way more shows now simply because I'm actually familiar with so much more that's coming through town.
I've "shared" hip albums with those who'd never heard of them before and created new fans that have then gone out and bought albums, concert tickets and other band schwag since discovering them.
Maybe it's all rationalizations and justifications, but it seems to me that the music industry is adapting to the times and new bands are finding greater exposure because of how freely music is being shared. I'm certainly no communist and definitely don't believe that I deserve to get something for nothing. But as I've said, I support the artists that I enjoy and my thoughts are that this new era of digital music is fantastic for those that make and love music.
I mean shit. I'm going to end up with 3 different copies of this new album, go see the live dealio in the theater and go to two shows in Sept. I'll probably even end up buying an overpriced t-shirt too.

Actually, I have many, many people ask me for Hip albums and Live Between Us, but I refuse to copy Hip studio CD's for anyone - and I am actually surprised at how many people feel I am an idiot for not giving it to them. Go buy it, damn it.
What I have done is actually make them my own mix of LBU - I take only soundboard recordings of other shows and put the songs in the same sequence as LBU. It is actually really cool to listen to. I have always wanted to throw it on the tracker, but I cannot.
Surprised it took this long. Remember we got M@W months and months in advance? That was awesome...

You're absolutely correct there, and there will continue to be confusion until the laws are actually clarified. The Conservatives had a proposal on the table to reform copyright laws but it died when the last election was called, but that was probably for the best because it wasn't a very good proposal to begin with...
I wonder if how quickly everybody hear openly pounced on the leak (including me) leaves a bad taste in the Hip's and MAv's mouth. They have been so good to us, yet I can't shake the feeling that I would be betraying them if I actually did listen to this. I know, I know, we've bought their stuff, I'm already getting two versions of the album...but somehow it feels wrong.
I hope they don't resent their fans now. After all, music is melodious air and it goes where it wants.

perhaps, as Stroumboulopoulos is on top of things, he will ask

Here I am thinking the right thing to do would be NOT to download it.
Ah well.
Mabey I will go download it but im still gonna buy the LP.
Would you consider it ok for me to download it, seen as I have already pre-ordered, and paid for the physical release?
I grabbed it. I don't feel bad about it after more than 20 years of buying Hip music on varying formats (cassette, VHS, DVD, cd...) and at countless venues worth of concert tickets. I have every intention of picking it up on the release date.
Bands and labels aren't stupid, these "leaks" are purposeful and calculated...

I won't burn studio albums of any Canadian bands for someone else.

That is what concerns me to, far more than more
general issue re: the "ethics" of downloading unauthorized music.
I don't give a rat's ass if people steal music. But to come on HIPbase and openly, shamelessly discuss stealing HIP albums seems flat-out disrespectful, and a slap in the band's collective face.
And maybe the Gords, Paul, Rob, Johnny, an MAv would read this and say, "we really don't care - it's not a big deal"; maybe they would just snicker and say "what a sucker!"
I would
still think it's tactless.
I'm pretty sure they don't care what people on here think, or we'd be listening to Up To Here part 12 right now.

Indeed.
I pre ordered. I have 2 tickets to 3 shows. Planning on buying the vinyl(maybe a t shirt at the show too). $25 $420 $25?? = approx $500 I support the HIP.
Listening to a CD before it comes out is just fun for me. I do not think it is horrible. Additionally, I have turned on countless friends who now go to every show with me and buy CDs(looking forward to the vinyl this year

). So I have no moral or ethical dilemmas
