Chancellor Meaning

Just sitting around butchering Chancellor on the guitar and wondering if anyone has any insight into the lyrics? I've read someone mention Hitler/Ava Braun but that feels a bit on the nose for Gord...though I know he used to rant about both frequently on tour. Someone else on another site suggested the vampire is Gord's temper.

Paul Langlois is perhaps best known as the guitarist of The Tragically Hip, though with two solo albums under his belt and cross-country tours to support them, Paul has been quick to make a name for himself independently from the band. Known for his powerful lyrics as much as he is for is tight guitar riffs, Langlois’ current solo album, Not Guilty, is a collaborative effort with fellow musicians Jeff Montgomery, Mauro Sepe and fellow Hip musician Rob Baker. It was the fact that Langlois is a huge John Prine fan which initiated a friendship with McDermott and his musical director Jason Fowler. This led to the two inviting Paul to record a beautiful rendition of John Prine`s, Speed at the Sound of Loneliness, on John`s album entitled, Just Plain Folk.

Cool as fuck. What a collaboration I would have never have had imagined. And apparently originally happened in 2005. Al Purdy Songbook (featuring Gord Downie)

So apparently there was a documentary that came out in 2015 called "Al Purdy Was Here". Never seen it, but here's the trailer:

The soundtrack/companion album was just released in October 2018 and features Downie's "The East Wind" as well as a live performance from Gord reading Purdy's "At the Quinte Hotel." Pretty cool. The album also features songs from Sarah Harmer, Greg Keelor, Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Dave Bidini, and Leonard Cohen, among others.

For what became a pretty impressive body of solo work, I think CMG may remain my favorite. Just as an overall impression, I find it pretty interesting that Gord was able to carve out this section of a career that was really musically separate and distinct from The Hip. There are not too many instances where I hear a solo song and think "that could have been a Hip song".

My main recollection of this album was hearing complete versions of the bits and pieces that had been interjected into songs over the past few years of shows. I'm also guessing I was likely confused by some of the more casual arrangements and the spoken word, but this remains an album that I come back to fairly regularly. I'm looking forward to the vinyl issue -- I don't expect it to be sonically superior, but it will be good to sit and listen to the album without interruption (i'll admit I often skip the spoken word if they come up in shuffle).

I was always curious about the band reaction to Gord's solo work. I don't think they ever said anything publically, until Rob's interview on the guitar stand that happened right around when Gord died (my impression was the interview was done at a time Rob knew the end was near). I''ll "paraphrase", but I recall he said they were not happy about Gord making a solo album and wondered if it was maybe the end of the band, but came to appreciate what Gord was able to do with his solo work. It must have been odd to see lyrics that had become part of the Hip show go into a solo album, but possibly it gave Gord an outlet for some less traditional songs and arrangement ideas that then allowed The Hip to continue on.

I do regret never seeing a Gord solo show -- for whatever reason, it never seemed to work out in my schedule.

I find this to be one of the most vague songs on Introduce Yerself.

The only thing I can think of is that it's addressing the horror that comes when you get the news that you have a fatal illness and the ensuing health protocols, all of the information being thrown at him - "the dark brochures"...and then the "ahhhhhh" screams at the end.

Any thoughts?
