Gordon Edgar Downie -RIP
#31

Not sure how to feel. Obviously sad. But also feeling some closure after the everything in the last year+. Thankful for all the performances I got see, especially last summer. And the music lives on, we will always have that. I didn't know Gord Downie the person, I have a relationship with Gord Downie the musician, through the music, and that doesn't change. And there is still more to come.

When Tom Petty died a couple of weeks ago my 8 year old son saw I was feeling down and tried to comfort me. He said, "Dad, at least Gord Downie is still alive." Him saying that helped a lot. It did feel good to know that Gord was still somewhere out there spending quality hours with friends and family, writing new songs, and making the most of his limited time. I knew the seriousness of his diagnosis yet I felt, or at least hoped, that this might go on for a few years yet.

Now, with this news today, I'm feeling totally gutted. There is no one else in this world, outside of friends and family, that I have such a significant love for. Gord has provided immeasurable joy in my life through his music and live performances. He had so much more to give. I'm sad for the music that will never be written and the songs that won't be sung, and infinitely sadder for the young family that will grow up without a father and for the bandmates that are left with an unfillable void.

For everything you've given me, thank you so much Gord.

I am absolutely devastated. Even knowing it was coming hasn't lessened the blow at all. My heart goes out to his friends and family. I feel incredibly lucky to have his music in my life and to have witnessed one of the most flamboyant and mesmerising front men even.

RIP, Gord.

It's funny the memories that come flooding back at a time like this. A friend just mentioned that he sought out Ry Cooder's music (who is trending on twitter in Ottawa right now, which made me chuckle) based solely on the line in 100th meridian. That sent me down a memory hole of having done a book report on "two solitudes" in Grade 12, simply because Gord dedicated Courage to Hugh MacLennan. There's so many of those small tangents in my life that were a direct result of spending a few of my formative years in Kingston and learning at the feet of those 5 masters.

Anybody in and around Ottawa want to meet up for a beer tonight? Share some stories and memories?
