Actually, he has come to Buffalo like three times since, and I always pass up the show.

I would say the hip accuratly could be described as a cross between Insane CLown Posse-Elvis Preslly-Micheal Jackson-Emimen-Elton John-Sepultara mixed in a empty carling beer bottle

It's so difficult to compare them to any particular band. I mean the obivious references to The 'Stones is apparent, even REM too... I call them alternative-rock, for the sake that no matter what is 'alternative' these days, The Hip are truly alternative in the sense that they do their own thing and don't strive for radio-friendly hits, and 'rock' in the fact that they are intelligent musicans. With a backbone of the 'Stones... the continuity of REM... the sub-apparent aggression of Pearl Jam and the commanding lyricism of Bob Dylan... well, The Hip are the Kings of 'Alternative Rock'...

bobnfran Wrote:I also love the quote:

"If The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. were to have sex, the result would be a five-headed baby called The Tragically Hip." I think it describes the "experience" well. (having seen them both live)

I have to wonder at how many that dislike DMB have ever seen them live? While I agree that they may not be the "head bouncing" style of the Hip they certainly are not "head banging" against the wall...

They are, however, VERY different from the Hip...

Fran

I have seen them Live and I do like them. But I will NEVER see them live again. As much fun as it was, 20 minutes of Lie in Our Graves is just stupid.....I mean i would rateher have 20 short songs than 12 crazy long songs.....

wow, a tough question all things considered--band started out like a bar band--driving rhythms,a bit of a zz top sheen to the guitars..--jason and the scorchers type bugaloo--very southern fried y'know? if they'd never progressed or broke up right after "upto here"--everybody would thought they were from louisiana or something---but no,............... whole new chapters were awaiting us...so whats the answer??---- they make rock and roll music the old fashioned way, that's for sure..but so does bob seagar right?--so what---the difference is or rather the question is..name another band with this kind of poetry-----the doors/dave matthews band/---a band with straight rockin tunes --the stones/pearl jam/---------------------a band w/ intricate, beautiful melodies/and interesting song structures--the beatles/ r.e.m./------a band or artist that makes you think--feel and groove---allin the same song---------radiohead/peter gabriel/the beatles/pink floyd --in short --this band fits in the one category that matters--damn good music,---- made over a number of years/albums/styles and textures with no concern for trends---just the artistry---i'll say without shame or apology and with hope in my heart-- --that the tragically hip have not made their best album (yet)--have they made a "sgt pepper" or a "dark sideof the moon?"---"the bends"? or a "joshua tree"?---yes and no--some would argue(me for instance)--"day for night" qualifies--and believe me it is a powerhouse!.--does notariety make a great album---of course not --if a tree falls in the forest--it stillmakesa sound---..but their consistant level of craftsmanship cannot go unnoticed by people who know the real deal when they hear it.---- talent and inspiration and hardwork that stands the test of time.period.

I would describe them as a cross between The Stones, CCR, The Doors and Neil Young with an ever evolving sound.

I can never cite another popular band that TTH adequately compares to. I usually explain TTH along the lines of:

"An artistic five-man rock band with two guitarists and a dynamic, poetic lead vocalist."

This description ought to pique the curiosity of someone who is capable of enjoying this band, and avoids discouragement by way of unfavorable comparisons.....

No that would be heartburn.

I really like the "If The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. were to have sex, the result would be a five-headed baby called The Tragically Hip." Analogy..
