So what kind of music is it...?? - fny1996 - 08-31-2004

Ok, so everytime I tell someone about The Hip and how excited I am to see them tour, I get the same response.....

First, they look at me like an idiot because I would travel all the way to New Orleans to see them.
And then they ask, "what kind of music do they play?".

I really don't like to categorize thier music. But for the sake of people who ask....how would you best describe it?

I always say a cross between Pearl Jam & Dave Matthews Band (I try and stick to popular bands so everyone can picture it).

In Orlando, when we were there for the House of Blues show, the playbill lists them as a Jam Rock band. I thought that was kind of odd...

The excellent Canadian rock biography, Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance, describes how they incorporate several stylistic domains, hard rock, folk balladry and experimental sound and poetry into a compelling form of performance art."

Or you could call them quirky alt-rock with a folk sensibility rooted in the finest tradition of Canadian storytelling.

I also once heard a critic in the States call them "art-rock".

I call them art-rock. I love that term. But then people say "what, like Radiohead?" and I have to say "no, it's art-blues-rock".

Rob Baker once said this, and I quote:

"I'd say we re a peppy little five piece combo of eclectic/post - modern/experimental traditionalists, or maybe a jazz/blues/raga/roots/rock band with a heavy metal/folk/rap sensibility."

Actually, that is how the book described the live album - which is a perfect way to describe them.

Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band?

I don't think the hip could be much more different from DMB.

I'd say more a cross between Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan.

I also love the quote:

I have to wonder at how many that dislike DMB have ever seen them live? While I agree that they may not be the "head bouncing" style of the Hip they certainly are not "head banging" against the wall...

They are, however, VERY different from the Hip...

Fran, I love DMB records, but I saw him live and was so far from impressed, I never care if I see him live again.
Actually, he has come to Buffalo like three times since, and I always pass up the show.

I gotta say, DMB was the only other concert we opted to spend funds on this year besides the Hip. We saw them twice in CT and they were fabulous...but...PALED in comparison with the Hip!! We needed that Hip Fix...can't wait for another!!

I haven't liked DMB for a while, ever since their first album, but I can see a little similarity. REM, I haven't been a fan since around "Losing My Religion" came out. But I can see the comparison, both singers have that nasal quality and sound alike. However, I think Gord has a MUCH better voice than Stipe. I have heard comparisons to The Doors, and I think they're more like The Who and CCR

They have so many styles it's hard to pin them down.
