a lot more than 10 great albums released this year though. A lot more than 40 even.

For sure, one of the best years I have had for buying and finding great music and artists.
1. The Tragically Hip - World Container

2. Bob Dylan - Modern Times

3. Tool - 10,000 Days

4. The Mars Volta - Amputecture

5. Carbon Leaf - Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat

I didn't pick up the new Neil Young (for shame) or the new Les Claypool, so I can't put them here.

Honorable mention to Mastodon's "Blood Mountain", it was a great album as well.
thedarkcanuck Wrote:back onto tool....wasn`t the pot released as a single? i`m sure it was, they play it on our local radio very regularly and i seem to recall seeing it on some chart listings

It was released as a single, but what was in question was why it wasn't the first single to drop from 10,000 Days.
Can't believe i forgot the Black Crowes...the 2 albums they put out this year are some of their best work, albeit they were recorded some time ago
my fav of 2006 is k-os's atlantis

Agreed. There's some amazing stuff on those discs.

I'm new to The Hip only discovered them just before Christmas and only own Yer Favourates as of the minutes, so I can't include World Container in my list obvisously. Good to see alot of love for Pearl Jam in your lists, it was the PJ forum where I discovered the Hip. Anyway my 2006 list.

10 - Guster - Ganging Up On The Sun.
Not as good as the last 2 albums, but another slice of cheery pop joy. The track Ruby Falls maybe hints at a darkerside of Guster, hopefully they'll explore this more next album.

9. Band of Horses - Everything All The Time.
A low budget debut 'The Funeral' is one of the best tracks of the year. Lots of potential here, looking forward to what they do next.

8. The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics.
It's a good album but I expect more from the Lips thesedays, at times it feels more like a collection of B-sides than an proper studio album. Still a disapointing Lips album is better than most bands best material!

7. dEUS - Pocket Revelution.
The Belgium art rockers return after about 8 years, a more straight forward album is the result and it's damn fine, if prehaps not to the level of the amazing 'Ideal Clash'.

6. The Twilight Singers - Powder Burns
Greg Dulli is a God. The Afghan Whigs were a great band, no an amazing band. The Twilight Singers continue the Dulli Legend, prehaps not quite up there with the best Whigs work or the last Twilight album but still a great album.

5. Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary.
The best debut of the year. Brought it played it once and decided it wasn't much cop and it wasn't played again for a few months. On this second play it started to grow, since then it's morphed into an amazing album.

4. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema.
The best pure pop album for years, fantasic stuff. Whether its the sugar rush guitar driven pop gems or the amazing folkier songs sung by Neko Case (who has the best female voice i've heard for ages) it's pure smile inducing.
*This probably came out in 2005, but in the UK it was impossible to get till 2006*

3. Muse - Blackholes and Revelations.
Ok the first single may be well complete awful, but nearly everything else works. Starlight is perfect while Knights is so utter over the top you can't help but smile.

2. Pearl Jam - Avacardo (SelfTitled).
Although I enjoyed 'Binaural' and 'Riot Act' lots another slower down toned album would have probably been alittle hard to stomach, which is good because Avacardo see's PJ rocking out again. Infact the albums explodes out the tracks with the first 5 tracks rocking as hard as PJ have ever done. Later on Parachutes with it's odd chord progression sounds like The Beatles and Comeback rivals (although just comes up short) 'Black' (the greatest song ever).

1. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife.
The outstanding album of the year. Simply stunning. Melodic, Folky, Old Worldy. This albums sounds so completely out of place in 2006, this is the album i'd recommend to anyone who thinks all modern music is rubbish.
Hrmmm.

Here's all I got, in no particular order.

Counting Crows - New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall
Hearing "Goodnight, Elizabeth" and "Holiday in Spain" is reason enough to buy this album, in my opinion.

Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked Ladies Are Me - This is their best effort in a good, long while. It's listenable and catchy without being too schmaltzy.

Tom Waits - Orphans Mr. Waits is fabulous and this triple disc set reveal all aspects of his unique talents

The Hip - World Container. I don't need to go into why this is an amazing album...do I?

The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soliders It may be that I am just a sucker for Jack White... This is infectiously catchy, without being dull.

i can't believe it, i totally forgot about Ice Cube - Laugh Now Cry Later, killer album, pretty much nothing but instant classics from start to finish from the self-proclaimed "father of this gangsta shit".

Both of these came out in 05'. Both are fantastic though, especially Wolf Parade. :thumb:
Not a top ten - but besides World Container :thumb: - Cracker's Greenland was my fav in 2006 – great to see Dave and Johnny back and in top form....
