Great Big Sea is a great band and I have to confess Barenaked Ladies is a guilty pleasure
I like them both and I'm not even guilty about it. Should I be? They're both great live acts.
I wouldn't mind if never heard from BNL again....

I'm intrigued. Why?
You know Sam, I probably shouldn't have even posted that, because now that you made me think about it, i realize that i probably haven't heard enough of their catalogue to fairly judge them.
I will say that their singles tend to annoy me....they just get on my nerves in a "too poppy" kind of way. Also, their penchant for humor sorta keeps me from taking the music seriously. I realize that's my problem - not theirs....so i guess i should give more of their stuff a chance before i throw them away....

I used to laugh them off as some novelty act, but after I gave Maroon and Stunt a proper listen, I ended up liking them. I thought their last album was a real stinker though.
I love BNL live. They just seem like you could walk right up to them and you know, hang out and stuff.
BNL, Gordon had a few killer songs on it, Wrap Your Arms Around Me, Blame It On Me, The Flag were highlights, but the whole thing was solid,
Their second CD had a few more misses, but was still pretty good, Born on a pirate ship was pretty bad, but after that I think every CD had one or two standouts, but was packaged with pretty androgynous BNL songs that sort of blended together....I saw them maybe 3 or 4 years ago, had crummy seats at the "dome, and still had a blast, they sure can entertain.

You know, I was a frosh at Western when BNL mania was taking over. I bought the infamous demo cassette, and I bought Gordon. I really enjoyed both but without warning their schtick got annoying. And then they put on suits and had a big US single and apparently I was supposed to like them again, but I never have. They are fantastic musicians - very talented. And there are PLENTY of bands I'd vote off the island before them, but I can certainly see where you are coming from.

I see what you're saying, HE.
Since I don't listen to the radio (we have crappy local stations) or the video channels, I don't get a chance to hear what's been released as singles. Perhaps that's a good thing? I got into BNL when I was still at university and I buy their CDs by default. I always find something to like on their discs but there are a few cuts that I end up skipping.
Okay. Sorry about the tangent there.
Vote Black Eyed Peas off the island. They suck.
opiated Wrote:and since they were mentioned in the other thread about bands you want everybody to hear..great big sea..can't stand those guys...
i may be one of the few in the maritimes that would agree, but i can't stand them. very arrogant band, and their music is such a commercial bastardization of what celtic music should be. i'm with you on this one, opiated.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Love HIPT, it kicks ass imo.
Meh, this thread is 100% pure opinion. I love BNL, but I understand fully if someone hates them. I think Spiritual Machines is one of the best albums I own though.
I find BNL unlistenable in the past 5 years, big fan of the early stuff though.
Spiritual Machines is a pretty cool disc, should pop that one in the cd player tonight, nothing else to do on a friday night other than studying for my 9am Tax midterm tomorrow
The Spiritual Machines interludes are so creepily awesome. Don't forget to listen to all 20 minutes of The Wonderful Future. Its about 15 minutes of silence, but then you get the final interlude. T'is a truly amazing disc.
