he's still a good player, but he's also a huge gamble, especially with the salary cap now in place.

$1.5 million hardly qualifies as a "huge" gamble.

$5.75 million for Forsberg is a huge gamble.
Exactly...the Leafs could sign ALL THREE of Allison, O'Neill and Lindros for $1M less than the Flyers are paying Saint Peter...and the Flyers have lost Roenick, Amonte, LeClair and Recchi in the process. Forsberg had better play 70 games, or the Flyers are in big trouble...

and $1 for Aki "Goddamn" Berg is a gigantic gamble, nevermind $1,000,000. Christ.

That's okay, though, because we shored it up with the big Belak signing. I swear, Belak must have dirty pictures of Quinn's wife or something. And a two-year deal to boot?!?

Cferenyh, how does this fit into the Ferguson Masterplan. Is it the "well, we gotta spend $39 million this season on somebody, so here goes ..." approach?

Ultimately, since a team must have 23 players on it's roster, any salary under $1,695,652.17 frees up room for a higher caliber player. Aki Berg may not be a fantastic player, but he does fill a roster spot for nearly $700,000 a year less than the average starter, freeing up extra money for a high-caliber player.

For every $1,000,000 Aki Berg contract, there is a $2,391,304 player on the way.

----- this post does not imply that Aki "where am I?" Berg is worth $1 million dollars to any team, only that the economics of it suggest that it may not be a TERRIBLE thing. -------

If the Leafs end up having to pay Owen Nolan.... they have $4 million (minus Belak's contract) to sign 6 more players. So, if Nolan stays, don't expect to see Eric Lindros, or any major signings at all. Expect rookies at minimum, and a tough time getting into the playoffs.
If Nolan is gone, $9 mil for seven players is a little more encouraging.

They actually saved money on a per season basis by going two-years, according to the Star this morning:

Quote:Then, yesterday, Aki Berg formally accepted his $1.06 million qualifying offer and part-time blueliner Wade Belak took a cut from his $798,000 qualifying offer and gave up a year of unrestricted free agency for the security of a two-year, contract that totals $1.44 million. He'll make $665,000 this season but the key is that it is a one-way deal. His qualifying offer was a two-way contract that pays substantially less if he is in the minors.
Belak is a serviceable defenseman who offers up injury insurance on the forward lines as well; something the Leafs are going to need LOTS of this season...

I've got nothing to justify Belak. In fact, when he's on the ice I do the same thing that I do when I see Darcy Tucker on the ice. I pretend he's someone else. Anyway, much like the Domi signing, I can't justify this one.

As for Berg, he's a friggin 5th or 6th d-man. What do you want? He's not spectacular, but he's also not so brutal that he should be in the minors. In his four seasons in Toronto he's a combined +10. What's so horrible about that? That's likely better than most of the 5th and 6th d-men in the league.

And let's look at which other d-men are making around $1MM this season:

Frantisek Kaberle
Andrei Zyuzin
Niclas Havelid
Cale Hulse
Barret Jackman
Radoslav Suchy
Vitali Vishnevski
Marek Zidlicky
Jordan Leopold
Branislav Mezei
Scott Lachance
Jonathan Girard
Bob Boughner
David Tanabe
Ossi Vaananen
Rostislav Klesla

I see a few good names on that list (Jackman, Zidlicky, and Leopold) but those three are in that salary range because they are either young (Jackman and Leopold) or new to the NHL (Zidlicky). The other names hardly jump out as a bunch of guys who are so spectacular that the Leafs look foolish paying Berg $1 million. Or maybe you are a HUGE Cale Hulse fan. Average d-men, average d-men's salary.

Honestly, is this the best you've got? "Waaaa waaaaa they didn't sign Forsberg and every other UFA under the sun" and "waaaaaaa waaaaaa they pay an average d-man an average d-man's salary".

Well it looks like the JFJ can cross Thornton off of his shopping list for next season. Damn.

Yeah, that's disappointing, I thought big Joe was as good as gone from Boston after this year.

c'mon. gimme some credit. 1) beyond mentioning his name once as a guy they didn't get, I haven't said anything about Forsberg in two weeks. He gets injured a lot. Like Allison and Lindros. I recognize. 2) I've said a lot more than waaaaaa waaaaaaaa.

My dislike for Aki "Finntastic" Berg is that 1) he sucks and 2) he is no better than any of those guys on your list, except he's had more than his share of chances to do something, anything, on the Leafs and hasn't, so why keep him hanging around. go out and get someone else. at least there's a chance that this someone else won't be Aki Berg, which would be a step in the right direction.

In the other thread, you said you'd save a spot on the bandwagon: thanks, but I've been keeping my own seat warm for the last 20 years, dude.

Oh, now I get it. One of the other 5th or 6th d-men on the list would come to the Leafs and magically become better than what they are. Umm, yeah, OK. That happens all the time.

Yeah, you are right.

Living in Calgary and being a Leaf fan means I have to listen to it all day at the office:

- "What happens if Allison and Lindros bump heads in the locker room?"
- "Belfour is more likely to collect CPP than MVP".
- "When are they gonna bring back Wendel?"

And on and on and on. So by the end of the day I get annoyed.

Sorry for taking it out on you. :thumb:

No worries mate.. I know where you're coming from, Ive had the most obnoxious Leaf fan around me for years, thats probably why I lash out at Toronto so much, its all Ive heard my whole life. But its all in good fun with me, I dont take my ribbing to far like some do. I love hockey and try to cheer for all the Canadian teams when they play, except against the Habs!

I have to admit, when I saw that headline at first I thought someone at TSN.ca was being goofy and putting in their pet nickname for Aki Berg.

"Aki Berg? More like Kukumberg!"
