Ah, but what about the Hip's WORST? Let's have it---the tragic, definitely not hip Greatest Misses Compliation.
However, I'd like to exclude material from the EP, which would probably dominate the list. So, more precisely, the agenda is: 10 tunes for the Hip's Greatest Misses from their major-label releases.
Offhand, I nominate:
Born in the Water
We'll Go Too
Emergency
Sherpa
Coconut Cream
Use It Up
Heaven is a Better Place Today
Wild Mountain Honey
Save The Planet
Toronto #4
Left off 'The Rules,' which I can tolerate, 'Putting Down,' 'Stay' and several other M@W mistakes which I can't, and 'I'll Believe in You,' due to its great spoken word middle-eight. 'Sherpa' is a fringe pick, almost salvaged due to the neat guitar and pungent fumes of dope that waft from my CD changer whenever it comes on...but it still seems a bore to me.
wow..couldn't disagree more about sherpa and emergency..two of my faves!!!

I love these tunes!

Oh, lighten up!
If you don't lik my list, make one of your own, for pete's sake---that's the point.
On 'Emergency'---'we're an endless emergency without end.' Well, if you're endless, you're without end. Duh. So that derails the tune to me, but I'm also irritated by Gord's singing at the upper end of his range on that particular tune. Just by way of explanation.
It sucks because it's impossible to come up with a list of bad hip songs. there are songs i dont care for, but even those songs are a illion times better than a lot of other crap you hear. not to mention the fact that nobody will be able to agree on which songs are bad.
First, the point of discussion is not necessarily to reach consensus. That we'll never agree 100% doesn't mean we shouldn't talk.
Second, the idea that the Hip shit lollypops is ridiculous. Every band lays a few eggs. Now, I'll cheerfully admit that the Hip's garbage is indeed better than a lot of other bands' hit records. That doesn't mean we can't say some songs are worse than others...in our opinion.
Third, yes, all opinion is subjective. Again, it doesn't follow that we shouldn't talk. By this logic, compiling a list of the Hip's BEST songs makes no sense either. We should all just pack it in and go home.
So, again...lighten up.

This is a shocking list. How can one call them their favourite band, and then have 10 songs that are misses, and a few others you can merely tolerate?
See my reply above...nobody, not even the sainted Gordon Downie, shits lollipops.
Even a band as great as The Beatles had some crappy material. Loving an artist doesn't entail the obligation to uncritically lap up their every single utterance. Sheesh.

cratch:
This needs no response.
Anyways, here are my ten:
just checked and I can't do it. I like pretty much every Hip song to some degree. Doesn't mean everyone has to like everything their favourite band has done, just in this case I more or less do.
Calling songs 'crap' and 'mistakes' is not cool in this case. if you dont like them, fine. but i'm sure if you asked the band, they wouldn't agree that they are 'mistakes'
The only song I am not overly fond of is The Rules.
But I would still rather listen to that than any other band.
Wow, this thread is heated...
In order to make everything somewhat acceptable, here is my list of 10 songs that I wouldn't consider for any compilation I was compiling, be it greatest hits or mood songs or whatever, unless that compilation's purpose was to compile songs I'd never put on a compilation
Trickle Down
We'll Go Too
Eldorado
Butts Wigglin
Coconut Cream
The Rules
Toronto #4
The Bear
Throwing Off Glass
A Beautiful Thing
Nothing against them...I wouldn't call 'em mistakes, in fact they are all pretty much integral to the album, except for The Rules, which disrupts Phantom Power for me, but I just don't love any of them.
How's that for PC?
As for Sherpa, it's one of my all-time songs, greatest five things (not songs, things) ever conceived...But that's what makes the Hip the Hip...Different songs coming along and kicking different people's asses, for a bevy of reasons.
ya sherpa is amazing. i got to hear it in Kelowna a couple years ago. I was pretty excited about that.
