It sure does, I think this whole topic is moots. And I think your list stinks!!!! I dont know how you can even make such a list and dont gimme your Gord shittin lollypops argument, it doesnt hold water with me, to compare those songs against the others is a waste of time, its like saying M@W wasnt as good as Day for Night so its not a good album, its stupid. Well Go Too, Born on the Water and Save the Planet are songs that I enjoy, the rest of your list might not be the Hip's best, or "A" material (to some) but to compare it to other songs and then label them the Hip's worst, is ridiculous. IMO And then you went as far as to critisize the lyrics and they way Gord sings the songs! You just went down a few pegs in Hip fandom. I think Tool Points should be in order here, hell I got zinged for way less the other day. And I assume your gonna come back with some smart-ass post, so go ahead, my mind is made up on the issue, and everyone has the right to say what they want, like it or not.

Five whole tool points! Confusedhock: [insert sarcastic remark here]

Listen, in all seriousness, I didn't mean to hurt anybody's feelings. So please accept my apology. Of course, if your feelings are hurt because somebody doesn't share your love of a song, then you might want to consider acquiring a thicker skin. Or ANY skin. But why add salt to the glaring, gaping, blood-spurting, heart-wrenching, so-traumatic-it's-life-threatening wound that is caused by somebody daring to say they don't care for 'Save the Planet?'

As for the idea that 'comparing songs' is a waste of time, this is simply silly---comparison is as good a vehicle as any other for promoting discussion, exchange of ideas, and ultimately, perhaps, greater self-clarification. But I'd at least be more inclined to respect the argument if a similar outrage had followed the request that we compile our favourite 10 Hip songs. Instead, and quite properly, people enthusiastically engaged the question. As I hoped they would do with my little thread here. In short, 'comparison' per se doesn't seem to be the problem; the problem is saying anything negative about the Hip. But who could say anything remotely critical about people who DO, apparently, shit lollipops?

I take it all back. The Hip are perfect. Transcendent. They are better songwriters than Dylan, better poets than Rimbaud, better musicians than Beethoven, wiser than Buddha, more perfect than God, and sexier than Johnny Depp after Botox. Feel better?

Now then, if anybody actually wants to have some fun and play the game of compiling a greatest misses CD, fer chrissakes do so. I can't take much more of this...

jay stains

coconut cream is my #1 song all time
Some of you people are taking this thread way too seriously.
The hip aren't invincible. If you had to choose 40 songs to live on, and the rest were obliterated from the earth, I am sure you could choose which songs to get rid of, so why is there no need for this thread?

It's just an interesting thing to think about.
She Didn't Know

4,368 tool points for that one. Smile

Now....

Those who don't think the band thinks of some of their songs as mistakes probably don't do any creative work of your own. Most artists start disliking their own work soon after completing it, and I'm certain their are songs in the Hip catalogue (the EP stuff, for example), that makes one or another of the band members hang his head and mutter "what were we thinking?" The fact that everyone might not agree has got nothing to do with it.

I hate lists, but I think these, at least, are completely forgettable:
Small Town Bringdown
Courage (yes, you read that right)
Butts Wigglin'
Coconut Cream
Silver Jet
Summer's Killing Us

Oh, gosh, am I no longer a "real fan?"
I forgot to put Are You Ready on my list. And Summer's Killing Us. (speaking of Are You Ready, Blue Rodeo's new album of that name is pretty damn good (if you like Blue Rodeo))

also, I want to see more use of the term "shit lollipops" in people's posts. That's good stuff.

The entire Fully Completely Album doesn't do much for me, but because of the production, not the song writing.
Most of the EP is a bit of a miss; though I'd have to save Bringdown and Last American Exit (largely for personal reasons) and of course Highway. Beyond that, I have gotten into Butts Wigglin after some resistance, but I'd add Chagrin and Silver Jet as a couple that just don't tickle the ol' ivories. The latter is especially maddening because of the frequent play (why not Pigeon Camera? Why not Membership or the Bastard?) and lots of loving from the fans.

Not a long list. Not a list of songs that "suck." Not a list to get upset over, just like this thread.

Let me also recommend Blue Rodeo's new album. These guys are the Hip's folky cousins from down the 401 and they keep producing.
