skippy the wonder dog Wrote:Do you really think that kind of cheesy track-by-track comparison is a valid approach to criticism?
it's been done before, i think it's fair, i took the best songs from M@W and put them against IVL, and IVL is track for track a better album.
It's been done before tongue-in-cheek. I don't think anyone actually thinks its a valid way to assess music.
No, I take that back ... at least one person apparently does....
ahhhh, but you cut Stay. how could you sit Stay on the pines? Stay's like the all-star of the album.
In any event, it's one way of comparing albums, and it gets you to the right conclusion in this case: IVL is better than M@W.
However, your comparison (I know you're not trying to be scientific) only compares 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 3, etc. (and even that is skewed when tracks are dropped). What if Are You Ready runs into a brick wall against MMAW ... that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a better song than Tiger the Lion, Lake Fever, Putting Down, Stay, the Bastard, etc. etc. (it's not, because it sucks, but that's beside the point).
still, you get the right answer.
I'd also get to that conclusion based on the fact that IVL doesn't have a stupid "@" sign in the title, which solidly cements M@W right up there in the .com stupidity of Y2K mania which swept the e-Nation right around 2000.

ivalid or not, it's not gonna matter how i compare the two, because the end result iwll be the same...this was the most fair way to do it, and i don't care if it lives up to your expectations or not, if you think my comparison wasn't also tongue-in-cheek i feel sorry for you. i've said many a time before that comparing albums and songs (especially by the same artist) is pointless and silly, because the truth is i love all of the hip's music.
ps: i love the @ in M@W, that's undoubtedly tongue-in-cheek, especially when you see the video for my music @ work.
Anyone think that a'la Kingston (Escape Is At Hand), we can put in a request for New Years Eve for Dire Wolf to be played? Maybe with the Gems intro?? Or do you think that's asking too much??

"the most fair way to do it"
ho ho, thanks for that, I needed the laugh. Apparently you missed the bit about the false veneer of obectivity?
I don't care which album you like better, I simply can't believe you're for real.
all this talk about bad production destroying IVL...the worst production on any album by far has to be Fully Completely....it's disgusting production
I'm all for hearing a little gems -> dire wolf at new years!
How do we set it up?
Actually, if I were picking a song to request it would have to be Another Midnight at midnight. I've never heard it live, and I want to.
Loved both albums. I would say, however that IVL is a better album. I thought it was a great album the first time I heard it. Would have been even better if Problem Bears was left on though. I also think Are You Ready and Use it Up are great songs despite the bashing they are recieving in here. My vote was for A Beautiful Thing I can't imagine how great that would be to hear live. Anyways thats my 2 cents

Likewise.
IVL is way overproduced and, I think, somewhat contrived. Good Life is a blatant attempt to get us holding up our lighters, and Dire Wolf and Dark Canuck seem to be attempts to sound like the Hip rather than genuine Hip songs. The album has some decent songs (and some even better songs were cut from it) but overal it leaves me cold.
M@W has its ups and downs, but its stars shine so much more brightly.
Do you really think that Gord sits down and writes songs "attempting to get us holding our lighters"? If you think that about Good Life then why not Bobcaygeon or ABAC. Whats your logic?
the darkest canuck Wrote:Use It Up vs. Tiger The Lion - Tiger The Lion
wrong.
Although, strangely enough I think im the only one on the hip base that hates tiger the lion with the fury of...well..a lion...hrmm..such a bad track...that being said, use it up is not great, but its not tiger bad...no way..
the darkest canuck Wrote:The Darkest One vs. Lake Fever - The Darkest One
No way, you're not getting away with this...Lake Fever is a phenom of a track.
the darkest canuck Wrote:A Beautiful Thing vs. Train Overnight - draw
GAGRGAGGAGGAAAHAHHAH!!! Are you serious??!?!?!? A Beautiful thing is the second best track on IVL.
anyways...as for Gems/DireWolf request, i think that is a bad idea, cause that was something special for the IVL tour...im sure we can come up with a better request...
like..oh...i dunno...
38 years old?
dig it.
Good Life, to me, came across from the get-go as a contrived, formulaic anthem. I do love that "forest of whispering speakers" image, but musically it's pretty much the standard rock anthem.
It's a tough call; I like every song and every album for varying reasons and it's difficult to pick favorites. Each track on IVL stands on its own merit (Iknow, many disagree) but if I were pressed, it would probably be a toss-up betwen Dire Wolf & Dark Canuck. I'm unable to decide.
As for M@W vs. IVL, the point is moot; it's like comparing Van Gogh's
Cart With Black Ox(from his Nuenen / Antwerp period, 1883-86) to
Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers (from his Arles period, 1888-89). Two different periods, two different styles, two different points in his life, two different artistic expressions, both compelling in their own right but neither better or worse than the other...just
different.
It's all apples and oranges.
