[quote="Chris Tanz"]I knew something was wrong with the tournament (or with me?) when after Sakic scored in the first minute, I was hoping Finland would get back into it, to keep it interesting. Don't remember thinking that back in '02.
i thought i was the only one...i was hoping they'd tie it in the final minute...strange..i just found the game really, really boring..didn't even crack a beer until half way thru the 2nd
The ONLY truly boring thing about it was the ending. Kiprusoff got pulled, but even with a man advantage, the Finns did not take control in the final 2:15. Brodeur made only three stops in all that time, compared to the five times we got the puck out of our zone. I was really hoping for a nail-biting ending, but we didn't get it.
For me the fact that this was the last time I'll see professional hockey for at least a year trumped the actual game itself. Canada HAD to win this one- can you imagine not watching hockey for a year after we lost? Talk about adding insult to injury! Not to mention that after all those Canada Cups, the Americans won the first and only World Cup heretofore. The stakes were too high obn both counts for this to be a boring tourney for me.
so i was actually there, and it kicked my ass. that was the craziest shit ever, being there when we won it and then outside partying in front of the ACC singing Oh Canada and a few rounds of We Are The Champions with thousands of my fellow country-men, it was PERFECT. being able to share that night and the sense of national pride was one of the most incredible things i've ever been a part of, i even got to hear some bar band at the fox and fiddle play some hip after i asked their guitar player if they knew any hip. they busted out 50 Mission Cap with the HNIC theme worked into it at the end, very cool. I can't believe i was back drinking again today after all of last night's craziness, but y'know i had to celebrate with my friends when i got home today

.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS MY FRIENDS
A TOAST:
TO HOCKEY, GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES AND TO CANADA (and i suppose to anybody anywhere who enjoys the good ole hockey game

)!
I had a great time at the game, but was very, very disappointed by the behavoir of the crowd outside on the streets after the game. How does destroying taxi's & busses equate to celebrating?
Such a pity that a great victory was spoiled by idiots. Every news channel covered the stupidity on the streets, and it overshadowed the coverage of the game, "Canada wins, but the real story was the action on the streets...."

Couldn't agree with you more!
Pretty embarrasing crowds considering it was a meaningless tourney.
Well that's just it...with no stakes or high drama, there was no "high". After our men won SLC Gold (the day after our women did), the feeling of elation was sucht hat everybody just wanted to sing and drink.
This time around, everybody got drunk as usual but five minutes after the game ended the excitement was pretty much over and these rowdies had to find a way to carry on the hyperactive feeling....
There are the Olympics, World Championships and then this... sorry unless they stop allowing the pro's in the olympics this tourney will mean nothing. Also you can't call it a World cup and only have eight teams. Where are the Swiss and Belarus, etc. These teams have the ability to beat anyone on any given day. The NHL picked these teams to come and called it a world cup. Bullshit I say.

The top 8 ranked countries in the world were invited...
yeah...no shit, who really cares about the Swiss or Belarus...gimme a break, this was a great tournament, and we won! what more could you ask for? quit trying to cheapen and detract from what was most likely the best hockey we'll see for at least a year. not to mention this is the first time we've ever won the "World Cup"! LEAVE THAT HATIN' FOR SATAN!
and take it easy on the:

They should have added 2 teams, yes, considering we've already seen the Belarussians knock off the Swedes in the Olympics... i think it'd be more competitive with 10 teams anyway, then at least 2 teams would be knocked out, meaning the round robin, actually meaning, something, as opposed to mere seeding.

It's the first time we've won it since it changed names from The Canada Cup to The World Cup.
yes, hence my quotation marks around "World Cup"...we've won Canada Cups, but this is our first "World Cup".
The only way this tournament could have meant something is if we lost. Then it would have been a big deal.
Canada Cup was great because it was a true world championship with the best players in the world, because they didn't play in the oylmpics at the time. This was a waste of time, I don't really care what the Darkest Canuck says, Canada cup world cup what is the difference, this was a hockey tornament, nothing more.
