I'm sure the Hip have partaken in mind-altering chemicals at one time or another, but it was probably back in the old days. These guys are all in their 40s now (with the exception of maybe Johnny), and they all have families. Beer and coffee (or beer and gum, as Gord says in Coke Machine Glow) are most likely their drugs of choice these days.
I do remember an interview with Gord Sinclair in Cannabis Culture Magazine a couple years back where he admitted he liked to smoke a little Willie Nelson from time to time.

I love being on drugs while listening to The Tragically Hip....
I would love being on drugs while listening to The Tragically Hip on drugs...
But I still love drugs.... and I still love The Tragically Hip...

I've heard rumors about GD's Heroin problems early in thier career. I've heard conflicting reports about that but now I know someone on the Hip Base who's met Gord many times and has seen track marks on his arms. However, as far as I know he's clean now except for his smoking lots and lots of as someone put it earlier 'willie nelson'
BTW, haven't you seen the Poets video? Doncha know what's in the fish tank?!
Wouldn't surprise me if the entire band did smoke it.
PS: I've never tried drugs, unless you count second hand pot smoke. However, I'm not around it unless I go to a concert in Montreal!

Jenna, I dont know if that "foggy memory" is just a clever reference to that video or not. But, if you are actually being unclever and serious, as I suspect you are, the fish tank contains marijuana.
Now, I am not saying that you are unclever all the time. You are very clever. And likely quite handy with your hands. But I wouldn't know anything about that either.

...us middle-aged men just making the finishing touches on a dope deal...
... and not for all the pot in Rosedale could you get them to stay...
...through walls of dope and apartment stew...
The Darkest One video featuring Trailer Park Boys....
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say yes...
But I could be wrong, I don't hit the hooka with them
(But I'd like to...)

A friend of mine from a band called Push Button Twist said that his band was going to open for the hip in Ottawa last year until he went to talk to Gord in person. I'm told that Gord, his wife and Rob Baker were in this upstairs room cutting coccaine. My friend didn't stick around long enough to finalize the opening arrangements.
From what I'm told.

No offense to your friend, but I don't believe that story for a second.
