I think comparing a band doing weed to them being are nazis are two completely different things.

Being a Nazis is a very sick thing to be. Smoking weed is not. For instance, that is like comparing someone who has been with charged with a small criminal offense to someone who has commited a felony.

Thats just my opinion.

I agree. Maybe it is a little too harsh. But it has relevance because some people might not like the Hip after hearing they are into drugs. Whether they are or not is not the point. I don't care.

But say the Hip are into drugs, or "hard" drugs, specifically. Say they get busted and spend ten years in jail or something. That would affect us as fans because they don't release an album for ten years. And some of us might stop being such fans if they went to prison.

I am not like one of these fanatics who want to know everything about the Hip that one could possibly know. I'm not going to stalk them and stand at the end of their bed at 3 am. But I do feel that this is a topic that is just as important as any other topic involving the Hip's personal lives. (Except performances, that's the most important thing to discuss)

Whether they do drugs or not, I'm still a fan. But to say that this topic shouldn't be discussed is being a hypocrit. I don't know if maybe I'm not making myself clear or maybe fellow hipbasers are getting the wrong impression about what I'm saying here but these are the main questions you should ask yourselves and only then will you be able to form an opinion on the subject...

1) Do you even give a crap about the personal lives of The Tragically Hip?

If "yes", move to next question....

2) Do you think celebrities have a right to privacy?

If "no", move to next question.....

3) Do you care if anybody does drugs?

If "yes", move to next question....

4) Do you care if The Tragically Hip do drugs?

It's as simple as that. I personally feel celebrities deserve privacy. But the current mind-frame of the world doesn't agree with me. I watched CTV news last night and found out Mary-Kate Olsen is anorexic. From CTV news... not a tabloid. So what gives? Do we even care? I don't. But I'm saying that a topic like this should be discussed....

(For the record, I answered "no" on the first question. But some people might have answered "yes," hence, the reason why this subject should be addressed...)

Of course I do , I also see people flogging merchandise. I do not take my moral cues or life values from what I see on TV, I also do not use it to try and justify my point of view(well the masses do it so it must be ok/acceptable). Do you assume what is on TV is the way life should be ? You have media whores scrambling for tidbits on people like some junkie looking for a hit, and you take your values and moral cues from a little box that tries to sell to you what you are and how you should be ? You're the furthest thing from a sheep ? Your the closest thing to and don't realise it. Think for yourself, not because tabloids, or any celebrity show deems it necessary and acceptable.

(There are people out there who idolize other people because of whatever they do and when enough people idolize this individual, they become a "celebrity" and people talk about who they're dating and where they partied last night and women model their hair after Jennifer Aniston and some people may even eat at McDonalds cuz Justin Timberlake is on the commercial, etc....)

Wow , thanks for the synposis , I always had trouble grasping onto abstract problems like "what gossip is" and what is a "celebrity". I better fire up some chronic so i take this in fully and completely.... It's a simple question... And I encourage anybody else who reads this to respond to it. I know FOR A FACT if one of them were, I would stop listening to them... simple as that. I wouldn't buy the albums created by somebody who did or believed in $hit like that. I wouldn't want to be associated with them or support them by buying the CD.

Another contradiction, you say you'd never listen to them again ? In a post previous, your boldly stated "I frankly don't really care what the Hip do; I'm a fan of the art, not the artists. " If you were a fan of the art ,not the artists the pedophile/nazi angle you choose to veer off into wouldn't bother you, would it ? If it's about the art, the art is the same regardless of crime or drug use/abuse, so maybe you would like to judge the person, then decide that maybe it isn't the art you are obsessed with, maybe them as people. Maybe you should figure out what you think before you type, because you contradict yourself regularly and no amount of saying " I didn't contradict myself " is going to change that fact. You asked if I would be a fan if I found out one of them was a pedophile or Nazi ? No point in wasting my time thinking about that, i'll face that bridge when it comes. You can say you will be or you wont be , fact is you do not know until it happens, same as anything in life, you can speculate what you'll do in times of distress, challenge or controversy, but until you face it, you don't have a clue.

I must say I’m not pleased. I thought this argument would be more intelligent. I thought you would be more intelligent. For starters, you have reduced yourself to playground rules. All you have done is repeated what you have already said and, in the process, tried to insult me in order to “win.” We call this “argumentum ad hominem.”

I started down a Slippery Slope in hopes someone would notice my brash “if-then” conclusions. Because you are focused on more ill-favoured motives?

You are also guilty of “argumentum ad consequentiam” by trying to associate negative qualities upon me holding my view of this situation by calling me a “sheep” in order to prove I am wrong. Whether I “hold stock in tabloids” or not is irrelevant and I have become bored of you.

You have not brought anything new to the table but I will give you a second chance to reinforce your opinion.

But right now, I will go over the properties that you should really not reduce yourself to;

1) I never claimed nor implied I held the vast majority’s view of celebrities.
2) I never said that I let TV deem what is acceptable and/or decide what my moralities are for me.
3) I never said I cared BUT I did say that I felt this is as an important subject as any whilst discussing the Hip.

Pointing out every possible mistake or contradiction I could have said (at different periods of time) in order to beef up your position is a coward’s move. I spent all of Junior High on the debate team and, strangely enough, we encountered this problem. People get fired up in the heats of discussion and, much like all the other logical fallacies you are guilty of, do not realize that they are digging themselves a hole. So, please, if you would like to have a serious debate of the issue, as I have an opinion on it and I’m sure you do (somewhere in that derogatory mess), you might want to get some skill before you try to take on a veteran.
