Took a little while to digest. Solid tune. Classic Hip to my ears. Trudging chords, slighty buried GD vocal, decent hook but not poppy. It's not really bar room Hip either, kind of Music at Work/IBE ish. I'm probably in the minority on here but I was enjoying the band as it vered into other area's... Alt Country:Morning Moon, Regge Punk:Kids Don't Get It, Modern Pop: Coffee Girl.

While Transformation really rocks (defenantly has some teeth), I am hoping for a more diverse album. I think we will all be surprised with songs like Streets Ahead. Probably will be ladened with acoustic guitars but I think it will provide classic Tragically Hip melody and grit.

So pumped for more of the album.... The Hip are timeless and it is a pleasure to hear new music from those 5 guys not matter what style...

You know, I can't even tell if this band is making good records anymore. It's always difficult to separate aesthetics from enjoyment. If I didn't have all the painful & strange baggage that I've gotten stuck in my terminal from the time I was 10 to the time I was 19 and if that baggage hadn't piled up while their music was a part of my life (big at times, small at times) I'm not sure I'd think this is a very good song at all. Same old, same old, you know? I thought that We Are the Same was excellent as soon as I heard it, but I was 18 and in a f.ucking crazy transient period in my life so I was clinging to the big things in my past, the Hip included. The bootlegs of the new songs that were being posted really disappointed me, and the studio videos even more. "But hey," I told myself, "it's their music and I don't have to listen to it. They can do whatever the hell makes them happy." But now I understand that no matter if I really like the new music or not, I'm gonna find something profound to project into whatever I hear that I could have projected into anything else and I'll end up buying the album like I have ended up buying all of their other albums. It's inevitable, and I've resigned myself to it.

I like the song after about 15 listens - like i like all Hip songs. Actually i liked it after 1 listen, but I'm the low hanging fruit for this band. It's churny, driving, toetapping, gnarling, surging - it helps me lift enormous things. I'll probably never lift another enormous thing in my life without humming that hook, but is it really much better or different than say Luv (sic) or Frozen in My Tracks? Lead off single? Sure, but a lead off homer woulda been better.

As good as No Threat and Love is a First, and miles better than In View, for recent comparators.

Personally I think it's a better song than both of those. And I really like those tunes.

I think I get what you're saying. This band has been such a big part of my life for so many years now, that they're kind of immune to criticism in some weird way. I still get excited whenever they put out a new record or announce a tour, and I'm still up early on release day so I can be the first guy in the store to buy the new album (yes, I still buy physical CDs once in a while). I have been critical of them at times, but never too critical. I honestly love the new song, but do I like it because it really is a great song? Or do I like it because it has that gritty, old-school Hip sound that reminds me of my college years? I don't really know. But at the same time, I don't really care either. These guys are still my favorite band of all time, and they're so ingrained in my musical vocabulary that I don't see that ever changing. There really is no other band that sounds like them. They're comfortable, familiar, timeless and dependable, they bleed integrity, and they'll never go away. And much like their American cousins Pearl Jam, they've never strayed too far from their core style of guitar-based rock n' roll. They'll never re-invent the wheel or pull a 180 like Radiohead. Some people say that's a negative, but I'm perfectly cool with it. They write and play the kind of music they want to play, and they do it very well. The curse of longevity is that every album they put out will unfortunately be compared to everything they've done before, particularly the albums that made them famous in the first place, or had the biggest impact on the lives of their fans. For me, their undeniably brilliant mid-90s output (Day for Night, Henhouse, Phantom Power) was the peak of their artistry, and they've kinda struggled to come up with an album of similar caliber ever since. They came pretty close with the excellent World Container, but Bob Rock's excessive, glossy production sucked some of the life out what was otherwise a pretty awesome and focused collection of songs (imagine the title track with just Gord's voice and an acoustic guitar a-la Fiddler's Green...oh, what could have been.) Speaking of longevity, I was reading an article about R.E.M. today that instantly reminded me of the Hip and where they are in their career; this paragraph really stuck out in particular:

"It's really only possible to describe their new album by referring to their old albums; they're one of those rare acts who've become a genre unto themselves. Collapse Into Now is doomed, as all post-Automatic For the People R.E.M. albums are, to spend it's life in mighty shadows. But it sparkles and twinkles nonetheless."

That REM quote is spot on for the hip!

I like this A LOT. I guess the only way to objectively know if the new Hip is good or not is to find someone who's never heard them and make them listen to each new song as it comes out. We'll become a tribe of digital Aztecs, offering sonic virgins in ritual sacrifice to our dark (canuck) god.

I was so fucking happy to hear a new hip song listening to the edge at work today, made my night!

I do have one bone to pick with the boys though, after all these years, and the millions of times they've played T.O., i finally move here, and they're playing oro station for canada day....booooooo, lol! shoulda been somewhere in the GTA, i don't drive so i'm out...oh well, as all of us fans of canadian hockey teams say "maybe next year"!

While not a complete newbie, I have a friend who's seen The Hip with me a couple times and likes their stuff. I played WatS for him in '10 and his comment was, "This is The Hip?! Where are the guitars?? It's crap - what were they thinking?" Then I mentioned Bob Rock and his reply was "That explains some of it."

I hope the whole album is like At Transformation and they're back to their strength (guitar driven). Also, live-on-the-floor is the only way they should be recorded in the studio.

I started feeling this way around In Violet Light, when I was in my mid-20s. Now that I'm 35, I don't care. I like new Hip albums. Are they objectively great albums? I doubt it, but who listens to music objectively? If I can pick up a few Last Recluses and a Depression Suite each album, I'm happy.

On the topic of baggage, I did buy One Night in Toronto for a thoughtful, music-loving Finnish friend in 2006 while I was living in Vienna and he wrote a full review of the concert, free from any historical context (he knew literally nothing about them) and/or any personal baggage.

He went all-out with a full review. Here's a very condensed version. Don't judge him. Smile

Vaccination Scar: Good, nice guitar
Fully: Hard-hitting, raw, good live lead singer
Grace, Too: Chilling, chaotic, delirious
Summer's Killing Us: 'Reasonable rocker,' catchy chorus, uninteresting overall
ABAC: Melodic, good lyrics, "one of the best songs" of the concert
Silver Jet: As close to typical private radio single as they get, compact, good
Makeshift: Good singing, good drunk music
Courage: "At this point the concert has become an unstoppable steam engine"
Bobcaygeon: Impressive, best melody of the concert
Nautical Disaster: Hypnotic, stands out on first listen, unusually well composed lyrics
Gus: Doesn't belong wedged between the previous two and the next two
Poets: Raw, mad, passionate
100th Meridian: "You can tell a good Hip song from the first few bars, or maybe it's an illusion of mine." Hard-hitting, singing 'defies the beat', nice arrangement, incredible finale
Nashville: A real downer. Annoying.
Music@Work: Good beginning and verses, annoying chorus
NOIS: Traditional rocker. "I don't like it as much as the audience." Guitar riff is neat but too complex to be an instant classic.
Heaven is a better place today: Leaves me cold.
Good Life: Good singing, good backing vocals, atmospheric
Little Bones: Fast, but doesn't maintain concert momentum, raving at end saves it some
Gift Shop: Sounds like filler
Springtime: interesting, aggressive, impressive, doors-ish, ends too soon
Three Pistols: Crowd pleasing, but simple and unmemorable
Boots or Hearts: Best thing about this is it's short.
Blow at High Dough: Excellent song, great guitars, catchy vocal line, feels like it's connected to Vaccination Scar
