I agree with you cochise, but, the math doesnt add up. 50 dollars @ ten thousand people seems less than what the event would cost. I agree that even ten thousand people seems like it would be overcrowding the place....Im going to take a drive through today on my way into Belleville and look again. My guess is that they need 20,000 people to make it worth their time from a business standpoint. I don't think that you could get away with paying Sam Roberts and Sarah Harmer for much less than 40 grand a piece.
I bet SRB and Sarah Harmer will be paid much less than your estimate. I know there are at least a couple of Hipbasers with insight into what opening acts for The Hip were paid on their US Tour, and it is A LOT less than $40,000!
Guelph Lake and Fort York only had about 3000 at most? and those shows also had th Sadies, Buck 65 and the Weakerthans.

With all the other "small venue" shows they have put on over the past couple years, I am going to bet that this is closer to the number being sold...........hopefully there will be a VIP section as well.......

I seem to recall both of these shows had a lot more people than that . . . but I don't know the how's, where's and why's

Fort York capacity: 5000

But I think it was closer to 7,500... and there are reports to this number.
Guelph Lake capacity: 6000
I think cochise is right about the numbers possibly? The show is on the east side of Zwick's park...which is something new. Driving by today it just seems hard to picture the set-up at this point. My advice is leave your car at home and take the train in if you are coming from out of town. You could book a room at the Ramada and be there within two minutes. Maybe 8-10 thousand isn't a bad guess, the set-up is sort of deceiving. The numbers might even be less.

On the East side?? Near the big hill??.......wow I didn't think it would be there, I can't picture that at all? I'll have to take a quick drive over myself after work........just too curious........LOL
sorry guys.. I didn't think there was that many.. but the point is there definitely wasn't 10,000 at either venue.
cochise Wrote:BakersBrew Wrote:They wouldnt be doing this kind of show for only 2000 people. Im guessing 20- maybe 25000. 20 thousand people gives them a gross of just under a million to work with. I doubt very much that they could do this event for much less than that (meaning pay all the bands, pay the crew during prime season, permits, rentals, promoter fees, etc). I forget what the draw was for RMC but it had to be in the 20 thousand range for attendance. Anything less would surprise me, especially with the line-up.
I think RMC was 35000........I think.......??
You think Zwick's could hold that many people?? If I had to guess, I think the maximum would be 10000......and in all honesty I think that is a high number.........but I could be way off
Exactly my sentiment. By saying 20,000 I was just taking into account that from what I've seen/heard of this place (online and through friends) it doesn't seem like it would be able to support a HUGE show.
Does anyone know the policy on children .Specifically,I was thinking about bringing my 1 year old girl.Staying a safe distance from the stage of course! Is there an age restriction for this event? Would i have to pay for a ticket for her? Etc....Any info would be appreciated.
Anyone know if there's a history behind the Big Music Fest? Is it an annual thing?
When you go to the event website
http://www.bigmusicfest.com/, pretty much all of the information tells you to check out thehip.com, which makes it seem more of a 'Hip event' rather than an overall music festival. Not that I'm complaining! Its a great line-up - I hope I'm able to snag a ticket.
Ya that website is definately lacking in information. Every tab that you click on gives you the exact same information. (last time I checked anyways).
A Little more info,

Big names to rock Belleville at summer concert

With big names and bigger hype, the producer of Big Music Fest is promising an unprecedented concert at East Zwicks park June 21.
"It's probably going to be the biggest one-day field concert of the summer," said Mark Higgins, the show's producer.
The Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer, and the Sam Roberts Band will be joined by about three up-and-coming acts. The gates will open at around 3 p.m., with music starting roughly half an hour later.
Higgins spent 10 years working on shows for the Belleville Waterfront and Ethnic Festival, ending with 2004's Jann Arden-Tea Party double bill.
Calling Belleville his "second home," the Orangeville-area resident said his Waterfront experience built the foundation for the new event.
"The infrastructure's there (and) a lot of friends."
Now, he said, he's planning a similar run with what he said will be an annual event.
"Big Music Fest is a 10 -year plan," he said. "You'd better book your hotel a year in advance."
He said the stage at East Zwicks Island Park will be built near the Quinte Dog Park and face southeast. The anticipated thousands of fans will be at West Zwicks park.
It will be an all-ages liquor-licensed event, Higgins said, promising lots of variety in the day's music.
"Canada has a lot to offer, so it's not a one-dimensional set," he said. "I'm going to get as many sounds as I can in the first show.
So, sounds like its gonna be an annual event...be curious to see who they will get over the next few years...........
Stage set up is still confusing to me..........says it will be set up in East Zwicks facing South-East, yet then it goes on to say the fans will be in WestZwicks??.............
I'm looking at attending this one with a few friends. Does anyone know how long the Hip will play and around what time they will hit the stage?
