True enough, but if you look at it this way.......

If you are working to just obtain a paycheck, you will most likely put in the minimum effort required to obtain. But if you are working at a job you love to do, you will put in 110%..........

Again, I am not defending, but I do kind of understand the possible lack of effort.....

One concertgoer said he'd been told in advance only that Balsillie had invited two of his all-time favourite bands to come and perform.

Turns out the bands were the Tragically Hip and the reunited Van Halen, which has earned rave reviews on its current tour.

It's not the first time Balsillie has staged such a show for employees of his Waterloo, Ont.-based company.

He arranged a similar gig with Aerosmith and the Barenaked Ladies a few years back.

Balsillie made news earlier this year when he tried unsuccessfully to buy the Nashville Predators, amid speculation that he wanted to bring the NHL team to Hamilton.

Maybe just another point as well... Normally for corporate gigs... it is the Corporation telling the band what songs to play.... So... to put it in perspective... imagine having complete autonomy to play whatever you want on any given night to being told what to play that evening...

i find it hard to believe that anyone other than the hip is making their setlists at this point... regardless of what kind of gig it is. if ahead by a century was requested perhaps they'd be accomodating... i'm a werewolf baby, probably not.

i don't buy that for a sec ... and van halen played the same set list they've played every (freaking) show of this tour.

As nice as that sounds, does that not suck some of the fun and surprise out of the show? I'd rather let the band decide and have them be really "in to" their choices.

I have been reading through this thread off and on and :lol:

I heard about this gig this morning on the radio..
and the Radio Host really did not give any praise to The Hip or Downie..
I only heard bits and pieces but The Hip being over rated was mentioned.. and Downie's adlibs or rants or whatever Downie was saying last night.. was weird.. and this person just came away from the show as thinking.. Geez Downie is one of the biggest 'flakes' around and really isn't a showman..

This radio station is in Toronto and have been very supportive of The Hip and no it wasn't Q107..

and never hear Van Halen on the radio..
So I am way out of this loop and was a little surprised to hear David Lee was back with Eddy..

I have never been a fan of Van Halen.. I feel we Canadians through Canadian radio have had this Hollywood 'put together band' crammed down our throats...
when other talented Canadian Rock Bands from this era..
have really gone by the wayside..

Do you think Downie has a BIG ego? and was trying to upstage David Lee Roth?

After the massive tour The Hip just finished was this Gig so necessary?

Anyway, from what I did hear on the radio, I could just envision what this gig must have been like.. certainly not a concert to write home about..

i don't get why they did it either...but then, i hold certain bands to too-high ethical standards, i guess.
yah, i know, they did it for the money. but, really -- do they need it?
and it's not like van halen are inspirations or heroes or something where you could have that warm and fuzzy feeling about playing with some dudes who inspired you.
idunno...the whole thing stinks as far as i'm concerned.
it kinda makes me squirm that they did it at all.

I found your info on a forum and tried to post but couldn't sign up for an account... Figured you might be able to post my comments.

the Tragically Hip opened for Van Halen at the ACC tonight. It started at about 7:30 and they played a half hour set, and then Van Halen came on.

This was a "private" function for RIM employees (allowing 1 guest per person) The ACC was almost completely full. The sad part being that about 30 minutes before the end of the whole concert, about 25% of the people left.

This was a crazy event all FREE, of course by RIM to show it's employees they 'love' them.

I was able to go thanks to a friend working there. Great time!

And on the topic of why they played... perhaps they like Balsillie. He's a fan, and has been supportive of them. Plus it was a show where someone else was responsible for the venue, the setup, the bulk of the crew, etc. all The Hip had to do was perform - something that they love to do.
