2018 Ass Kickers
#31

I am really into this album right now:

Tampa - Belated Love

It's a debut album, and they're Canadian. With a debut this excellent, I hope these guys and gal keep getting bigger and bigger. Can't wait until they come through Ottawa for their first time! If your reading this right now just add it to Spotify. Trust me. Then come back here someday and validate my recommendation, please

This is so, so good. Largely ditches the distorted guitars of her last excellent record for a broad range of sounds, from piano ballads to disco and country. Sample: Nobody

My favourite weird folksy indie rock band with a cello returns with a concept album about love in space after leaving Earth due to an apocalypse. Sample: True Dark

Pretty quiet folk from a young woman grappling with leaving behind her religious upbringing. Produced by Owen Pallett. Sample: Self-Help

Catchy indie pop/punk rock from New Zealand. Sample: Future Me Hates Me

Wow! Just gave this a listen, and it's great. Kinda reminds me of a young Aimee Mann.

Speaking of female songwriters, Amanda Shires just released one of the best albums of the year IMO. People might know her as Jason Isbell's wife and part-time member of his band the 400 Unit. But she's a damn fine songwriter in her own right, and she's actually released more albums than her husband (this new one is her 7th full-length record). Isbell contributes some kick-ass guitar to a few of the tracks.

Here are my two favorite songs on the album.

Great recommendation! I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never heard of her before. I've got a lot of work digging into the back catalogue ahead of me. Any older albums, in particular, that you'd recommend?

My Piece of Land and Down Fell the Doves are both excellent. Those are the ones that first got me hooked.

Thanks! I've got some long drives coming up, so it'll be perfect to load up on some of these.

Glad people are liking the Tomberlin! I dig Amanda Shires too, her new record is a weird blend of country and pretty much everything else, which is pretty unique.

(Saintseneca - Pillar of Na)

Right up there with Mitski and Damien Jurado in my frontrunners for 2018. Intricate yet ramshackle prog-folk with really clever lyrics and interesting instrumentation. The vocals are a bit of an acquired taste but once you get used to them everything comes together nicely. Sample: Ladder to the Sun

I need some new ass kickers. I've fallen into an unexpected Big Sugar/Grady rabbit hole; I saw Big Sugar at the Ex last week and loved the way they've kind of reinvented themselves as a power trio, so some ROCK N' ROLL MUSIC would be welcome.

Wow, thanks for the recommendation. These guys are great! Digging through their extensive back catalogue is gonna take some time though. I remember hearing their name mentioned once or twice over the last couple of years, but I didn't realize they had been around for so long.
