She's brilliant. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out her back catalogue with her main band Heartless Bastards as well. Some of the best rock n' roll you'll hear these days.

Can't stop listening to this album. Best thing she's done yet.

I like the new Neko a lot but that cover art is one of the worst I've ever seen.

I agree, it's pretty bad. Apparently it's supposed to have something to do with the recent loss of her home, which burned down while she was recording the album. Surely she could have picked different artwork to symbolize a house fire? That cover is just bizarre.

I heard about her house fire, but you're right, the cover doesn't really hang with that concept. And even if it did, the execution is totally amateurish and poorly put together. Ah well, the music is what counts.

In other "good music/bad cover" news:

Vocals from Laura Marling and nice fairly mellow electronic backing. Sample: Curse of the Contemporary

(Half Waif - Lavender) Less bad cover here. Pretty mellow synth pop, but less mellow than the above. Sample: Keep It Out

(Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer) A nice blend of his last two albums. He's still a grandiose jerk, but he's funny and I like him. Sample: Mr. Tillman

Just discovered this awesome alt-country band from Texas called American Aquarium (named after the Wilco lyric from I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: "I am an American aquarium drinker...")

From a musical standpoint I'd say they're definitely cousins of artists like Jason Isbell and the Drive-By Truckers, in that they write intelligent, politically conscious rock songs with a country twang. Lead singer/guitarist BJ Barham writes pretty much all of their material and he's got a raw, emotional delivery that really hits you in the feels. Their latest album "Things Change" is fantastic. It's gonna take me a while to dig through the rest of their back catalogue (7 previous albums including a Barham solo record), but I'm looking forward to the adventure.

Another brilliant release from the parkey quartz!

[Image: parquet_courts_wide_awake.jpg&maxx=300&maxy=0]

I've been in love with them ever since Sunbathing Animal, and Human Performance was just as good, if not better than Sunbathing Animal.

And here we are now!

They legalized just in time for this year's AAA+ crop of psychadelic sizzlers, bong rattling bangers, lung collapsing chaos, mind expanding musical experimentation, the weird, the wonderful, the wacky and the outright weedy...plus some other stuff. Hooray!

Side effects may include: may cause blood to boil, may cause ears to bleed, may cause clenching and raising of one and/or both fists, may cause headbanging, may cause slam dancing, stage diving, moshing, and the overwhelming urge to break stuff, set fires, punch people, go on a drunken (possibly naked) rampage...enjoy.

A Perfect Circle - Eat The Elephant

I have an appreciation for Tool and APC, although I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. However, I'm really enjoying "Eat the Elephant". It's topical and while Maynard occasionally comes across as an old man ranting against selfie culture, no one does a simmering rage better. In general the album is more subdued and piano driven but there are a few barn burners on there. I really like "By and Down the River" and "Feathers".

My current pick for album of the year (so far). It's not often that a band knocks it out of the park in the latter stages of a 30+ year career, but the Junkies have certainly done it here. It's got that dark, haunting quality that they've always had, but it's much more political lyrically and it rocks a little harder than anything they've done previously. All killer, no filler as they say.

(Florence + the Machine - Higher Than Hope)

Sometimes over-the-top melodramatic orchestral pop, but I dig it. Sample: Hunger

(Petal - Magic Gone)

Emotional indie rock. Sample: Tightrope

Somewhere between rock and pop. Sample: Reviews

Solo project of Wintersleep's singer. Basically slightly less loud Wintersleep. Sample: Evil

Quirky indie pop from a bunch of ladies who were tired of being token girls in their respective bands. Sample: General Electric

This one's a big tough to describe. Rock with emphasis on drums, veering into country at times? Sample: Gap Year

Teenage me would be appalled at all these female vocals, but teenage me was kind of an idiot.

I'll second this recommendation. The first Postdata album from 2010 is a bit sleepy but this new one expands the sound and has some excellent writing on it. For those familiar with the Scottish band Frightened Rabbit, two of the band members join Paul Murphy on this album.

One of my favourite albums from 2018, so far, is Lord Huron's "Vide Noir". He expands his sonic palette considerably this time around, moving from strummy folk-pop to, at times, a more garage rock and even glam sound. As I recall one reviewer remarking, it falls somewhere between Fleet Foxes and The Black Keys.
